WELCOME 01

Summerhall is a venue for diverse programmes of visual

and performing arts, at Festival time and throughout the
year. It is a place for all kinds of events, parties,
workshops, festivals, weddings and meetings. It is home
to a varied community of creative artists and businesses,
including a pub, café , brewery and distillery. We host all
of this activity in our unique home; Edinburgh’s former
Royal (Dick) Veterinary College. Our aim is to be a major
cultural destination where audiences meet and mix and
where artists and performers are inspired to make and
present their best work.
Summerhall is for everyone. Whether you are engaging
with our exhibitions, catching the best in avant garde theatre,
grabbing something to eat in the Royal Dick bar or simply
soaking up the atmosphere in our buzzy courtyard, there
is something for you to explore, discover and most of all,
enjoy, this Festival and all year round.

CONTRA
Written and performed by Laura Murphy,
directed by Ursula Martinez
Drawing from circus, stand-up and live art, Contra is a solo-cabaret of
contradictions. Fierce, witty and uncompromising, this highly physical
show interrogates personal, social and historical occupations of the female
body and explores - literally - where such bodies are positioned and how
we are meant to look at them. Expect scenes of nudity, aerial acrobatics,
and explicit references to mythical reptiles and female sexuality. Laura

EJACULATION - DISCUSSIONS ABOUT

FEMALE SEXUALITY
From Start to Finnish
Is female ejaculation the last taboo? A documentary performance about
sexuality and desires by Essi Rossi and Sarah Kivi, based on interviews with
women from various backgrounds and countries. Through a personal journey,
the performance creates a safe space for self-discovery and explores the
collective experience of female sexuality. As well as the sexual meaning of
the word ejaculation, this piece explores its original meaning: a sudden
verbal exclamation, an emotional outburst of words, the desire to be heard,
in an honest dialogue about the most crucial questions of female sexuality.

LOUDER IS NOT ALWAYS CLEARER

Mr and Mrs Clark
Meet Jonny: teacher, father and football fan. He’s an artist, a campaigner,
and he’s deaf. He wishes he could sing and loves to dance, but he can’t hear
the music unless the bass is turned right up. Jonny grew up in a hearing
family, surrounded by fear of the stigma of disability. Louder Is Not Always
Clearer tells Jonny’s moving, funny story of disconnection, difference and
desperation to belong. This one-man show is a starkly honest portrayal of a
man seemingly confident, outgoing and popular, who is inwardly vulnerable
and, at times, isolated.

Taiwan’s Chang brothers (co-creators of Fringe 2018’s hit show Bon 4 Bon)

communicate best through their bodies. By exploring their strong, if

TO MOVE IN TIME
Tim Etchells & Forced Entertainment

Imagine you can travel through time. Backwards and forwards. What would
you do? Go back into history to change the present? Get rich using
knowledge of the future? Written by Tim Etchells and powerfully performed
by Tyrone Huggins, To Move in Time is an unfurling trail of thought in which
extraordinary and impossible fantasies are dreamt up, lived out and then
discarded. An obsessive stream of consciousness, tangled and contradictory,
the work combines Etchells’ text with Huggins’ powerful performance to

SIOBHAN WILSON
Nothing Ever Happens Here

Following the critical success of her 2017 album There Are No Saints,
Edinburgh songwriter Siobhan Wilson plays a hometown show, bringing songs
from her new record The Departure. A poignant celebration of independence,
it’s a record that finds the artist asking questions about fragility and strength,
whether addressing toxic masculinity or the divinity of nature.

from a remote Canadian First Nations community into an unfamiliar urban
