Mapping is an important skill used in Geography. There are 6 key elements of every
map which we can remember using the acronym BOLTSS. These elements help us
understand and interpret maps.

Border – tells us where the map ends or where it measures to.

Orientation – Can also be referred to as a compass or north points on a map. It tells

us which way is North

Legend – also called a key, the legend shows what symbols on the map mean

Title – are very important in mapping as they tell us what the map is showing. There
are different types of maps and so the title needs to be subject specific and clear

Scale – is essential as it tells us how large or small the area on a map is. When we
have a large scale we see a lot of detail because we are showing less area on the map,
but when we have a small scale we see less detail because we are showing more of
the earth in a smaller space.

Source – usually located at the bottom of the map or near scale it tells us where the
information is from or who produced it.
