Chapter 5

Summary, conclusion and recommendations

Introduction

This chapter represents the summary of the findings, conclusions and recommendations

based on the data analysed in the previous chapter. The perception towards internet piracy of De

La Salle John Bosco College students was researched by determining to what extent some of the

student’s perspective towards the issue of internet piracy and how would the student handle the

fast innovation of technology especially the vast information circulating around the internet

Summary

This research is mainly subject upon the perception of students of De La Salle John Bosco

College about Internet. The respondents of the study was from Grade 7 to Grade 12 Students

specifically we chose the grade 7 to 12 for the reason they are mature enough to give out reasonable

responses. The researchers chose to study student’s circumstances, behaviour, and thinking in

terms of gathering their perceptions towards internet piracy, their desire, awareness, and goal of

oneself when it comes to obtaining a paid copyrighted media.

The background of the study was done by researching the literature on the situation

internationally and locally withdin the framework of repeating occurrence of incidents regarding

internet piracy. The background of the research scope the factors involving internet piracy and its

impact to students. It has been discovered that internet piracy has been an issue for many content

creators and publishers for their perception of “loss” sales when a certain paid media gets pirated

The objectives of the study were to answer the specific problems which are:
• What are the perception of De La Salle John Bosco College students regarding internet

piracy?

• What are the circumstances why students tend to resort in internet piracy?

• Are the students aware of what internet piracy is and its cost once caught?

• Do students rely on internet piracy to obtain digital product they desire?

The related literature of the research was done in second chapter of this study similarly

being conducted by various researchers in different places. The phenomenon of Internet Piracy

was clearly defined with its issues and articles being stated. Evidences of its existence was also

acknowledge. A solution regarding to the issue was also presented and the idea of internet piracy

towards the students was well justified.

On the third chapter of the study, the researchers used descriptive type of quantitative

research approach in studying the perception of internet piracy amongst students of De La Salle

John Bosco College. The research population was obtained from the registrar of each of the six

grade level and the sections within those levels being. The sampling method used in this study was

the simple random sampling method, as it was believed that the most important information to

answer the research questions is to balance the respondents of each grade level. The number of

respondents who willingly took part in this research was 310. The researchers also use the mean

table and text base description to identify some evidences on the current study. The tool used by

the researchers was a questionnaire which is based on a 5 point rating scale questionnaire with the

given statements about the perceive value of copyrighted paid media, the participation in internet

piracy, and awareness of oneself when it comes to using internet piracy as a medium to obtain
copyrighted paid media. To determine the results, the researchers did the tallying of data from the

Grade 7, 9, and 10 students which is composed of 4 sections, while Grade 8 was composed of 5

sections and lastly the Grade 11 to 12 which composed 7 sections. Separating each grade level in

identifying the mean scores then combining the total of each grade level. The findings were

presented and discussed in chapter 4 by frequency tables.

Problem 1: What are the perception of De La Salle John Bosco College students regarding internet

piracy?

The findings of the perception of the Gr.7 to Gr.12 students towards internet piracy is that

all of the students do sometimes commit internet piracy. The grade 7 students was the least grade

level that participated in internet piracy while other grade levels commit roughly similar results.

The grade 8 are becoming more active when it comes to internet piracy while in the grade 9 level

it becomes even more so, apart from occasionally downloading music and videos from ripping

sites they now download movies and games, this goes on until Grade 10. In senior high the

participation in internet piracy skyrocketed, often relying in internet piracy in obtaining paid media

without paying. Having multiple and different reasons for committing internet piracy which

decreases the self-efficacy for the higher grade level

Problem 2: What are the circumstances why students tend to resort in internet piracy?

The findings of the circumstances why students tend to resort to internet piracy is answered

through Problem 1 and in Table 1.1 & 1.2 the question “I download paid media without paying

because it is expensive” which the grade 7 level find them rarely expensive which we presume

they care little for paid media. For the grade 9 level they sometimes find paid media expensive

which is one of the reason why they tend to pirate which we assume the realization of the cost of
paid media. In the senior high level a factor that contribute to the tendency to resort in internet

piracy is using paid media for other activities which we speculate the lack of finance of the students

(from question no.28)

Problem 3: Are the students aware of what internet piracy is?

The data can be found in Chapter 4 Table 2.1 & 2.2 and from the findings the researchers

found is that the grade 7 & 8 level are aware yet rarely commit internet piracy which indicate they

have a higher level of self-efficacy than other grade levels. In the grade 9 level we assume they are

starting to explore internet piracy (from the data in Table 1.2) and ignores the laws against it and

going higher the grade 10 to 12 level had a constant awareness of internet piracy presuming these

grade level are cautious with their activities associating with internet piracy

Problem 4: Do students rely on internet piracy to obtain digital product they desire?

The findings whether the students do rely on internet piracy can be concluded in the data

from Table 1.1 & 1.2 from chapter 4. The grade 7 students rarely rely on internet piracy while the

grade 8 to 12 students has a constant level of reliance on internet piracy and from a student’s

perspective on new activities and projects that needs different paid media to be completed may

have increase their reliance on internet piracy

Conclusion

Each grade level having different perspective in internet piracy and the factors that lead to

commit in internet piracy. Having the Grade 7 level being the most innocent grade level showing

the highest self-efficacy than other grade level while the Grade 12 level has the lowest self-efficacy

rating showing their reliance in internet piracy and their different reasons in committing so, while

in the grade 10 to 11 shows off as a shift from rarely committing internet piracy to sometimes
committing internet piracy probably due to other activities in their daily life and the lack of finance

and all grade level students rarely pirate for the reason not to support its creator. The conclusion

for this research is that students in De La Salle John Bosco College do rely in internet piracy and

are aware of what internet piracy is.

Recommendations

The researchers recommended the following:

• Student should be informed about internet piracy

• Students should be informed about copyrights and laws against internet piracy

• Students should not be afraid of confessing if they have committed internet piracy for which
everyone has probably done internet piracy once in their life

Recommendations for further research

Further research is recommended

• On the attainment of the other new developed objectives on this topic.

• On gathering an in depth causes for internet piracy within De La Salle John Bosco College

• Better Researchers.
