INTRODUCTION

 AutoCAD is a 3-dimensional computer-aided design software from Autodesk which

is built and developed for product designing and manufacturing planning, building
designing, civil infrastructure, and construction.

 It is a part of Autodesk’s collection of 3D CAD programs used by product

development teams, manufacturing facilities, media and entertainment industries,
engineers, architects, educators and students, entrepreneurs, non-profits, medical
professionals, and including beginners.

 AutoCAD is used for making 2D drawings, drafts, and documents, as well as 3D

models and visualizations.

 Its 2D drawing, drafting, and annotation features include the capability to control the
appearance of texts, create dimension styles automatically, link and update data
between Microsoft Excel spread sheets and tables within drawings and work with
dynamic blocks.

 In terms of creating 3D models and visualizations users will be able to add lighting
and materials to their 3D models to achieve a realistic appearance and rendering. They
can also control the edges, lightning, and shading in their models.

 The software allows users to analyse the interior details of 3D objects. AutoCAD
enables them to import data from PDF files so they can collaborate with their
teammates as they review their models and drawings.

 Last but not the least, they can customize the user interface of the software to
streamline their tasks and access its functionalities and features much easier.
OVERVIEW OF AUTOCAD BENEFITS

 AutoCAD helps users prevent product failures and warranty issues, innovate
products and improve their performance, and win more bids by providing them tools
and workflows to design and build great products.

 AutoCAD also has the objective of assisting them to machine, print, inspect, and
fabricate quality product parts such as car, wind turbine, and aircraft components.

 In addition, the program helps them design better buildings, deliver scalable and
sustainable infrastructure projects, manage construction costs, and predict project
outcomes.

 To do all of this, the 3D CAD program offers 3D modelling and visualization

features and functionalities. One of them is the capability to apply different 3D
modelling techniques so they can create realistic 3D models of products and their
parts. Thus, the program enables them to build 3D wireframes, solids, surfaces, and
meshes.

 To achieve photorealistic renderings of 3D models, AutoCAD allows them to attach

materials to 3D objects, as well as, add lights to scenes. They will be able to control
the appearance of the attached materials, the lighting, and the shadows in their
models so their teammates and prospective clients can obtain a clearer vision of their
conceptual designs.

 Another 3D modelling and visualization feature available in AutoCAD is the

capability to create section planes. Section planes are used to achieve cross-sectional
views of 3D objects.

 They can modify and move section planes to examine the inner details of 3D objects,
enabling them to cut through solids, surfaces, meshes, or regions.

 AutoCAD allows them to control the appearance of texts in their 2D drawings. By

adjusting its text settings, users will be able to change font, line spacing, justification,
and colour.

 Also, when they change the text settings, all text objects in the drawing that are
using the current settings will be automatically updated.

 The program also provides users with the capability to configure the dimension
settings. This includes controlling the arrow head style, text location, and lateral
tolerances. They will be able to create dimension styles and apply them automatically
to all the dimensions of the drawing.

 AutoCAD has a powerful 2D drawing feature which allows users to link tables
within their 2D drawings to data in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

 As a result, they will be able to import formulas and calculated data from Microsoft
Excel into their tables. When they add rows or columns to a linked spreadsheet, the

2|Page
changes will reflect on the table the spread sheet is linked to. Likewise, a linked
spread sheet will be updated accordingly once they make changes to a table.

 In addition, users will be able to import non-Autodesk 3D models into AutoCAD,

insert geographic locations and display online maps in their drawings, and attach
drawing and image files to current drawings as external references.

TOOLS OF AUTOCAD

 Offset
 Trim
 Extend
 Move
 Rotate
 Copy
 Array
 Mirror
 Scale
 Fillet
 Join
 Explode

Offset

 Create a duplicate object parallel with the original object. If this object is a Polyline
or a Circle, the duplicate shape will be transformed inwards or outwards. This option
can be useful to make closed steel profiles.

 To offset: First select the offset distance, [enter], select the original object, specify on
which side we want to offset.

Trim
 With the trim option objects can be shortened or lengthened with the edges of other
objects. Objects can exactly be fitted between these objects.

 To trim an object: Type tr in the command line, optionally select the line which we
want to trim (otherwise all objects are used, which is fine in most cases),[enter], select
the objects to trim.

 To trim multiple objects at once we can drag a selection window.

Extend
 With the extend option we can shorten or lengthen objects to meet the edges of other
objects. For example a line can be exactly fitted between objects. Extending an object
works in the same way as trimming.

 To extend: Click the Extend command optionally selects the object we want to extend

Move
 Moves one or more objects:

5|Page
 Select the objects and specify the base point.

 The base point is essentially the point where we 'grab' the objects. So if we input
coordinates, the base point is the point where the coordinates relate to.

 Moving an object can either be done with the aid of object snap, or by using relative
coordinates.

Rotate
 We can rotate objects with an absolute or relative angle. When using an absolute
angle: Specify the base point and then specify the rotation angle.

Copy
 Copy's one or more objects.

 Method:

Select objects, press copy and specify a base point

Now we can position the object in the same way as we would start with a point of
line.

Array
 Create copies of objects in a rectangular or polar pattern. This is especially useful
when we need to duplicate several objects at the same distance from each other

 After clicking on the array button the screen will appear.

 In this screen we need to input the number of rows and columns and their respective
offset.

Mirror
 Create a mirror image of an object. It is useful for creating symmetrical objects
because we can quickly draw half the object and then mirror it instead of drawing the
entire object.

 We flip the object about an axis called a mirror line to create a mirror image. First
select the object. To specify the temporary mirror line, we enter two points.

Scale
 To scale an object we can specify a base point and a length, which will give a scale
factor.
 Scaling using a scale factor: Select the object, type sc in the command line, scale
factor, [enter]

6|Page
 Scaling using a reference: Select the object, type sc in the command line, specify base
point, choose r to use reference, specify the reference length of the original object,
and specify the new length of the original object.

Fillet
 We can use the fillet tool to connect two objects with an arc with a specified radius.
The inside corner is called a fillet and an outside corner is called a round.

 To fillet: type f in the command line, type R for the radius, specify the radius, [enter],
select the first line, select the second line.

Join
 We can use the join option to combine similar objects into one single object. It is also
possible to create complete circles from arcs.

 The object we want to join is called the source object. And the objects we want to join
have to be located in the same plane.

 To join: Type j in the command line, select the source object, and select the lines to
join to the source object.

Explode
 Polylines, hatches or blocks can be converted into individual elements with the
explode option.

 If we explode a polyline every segment will become a separate line.

 To explode a block: First select the block, type ex: [enter].
