Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literatures after thorough and

in-depth search done by the researcher. This will also present the

definition of social media and media platforms, Philippine’s status in

the aspect of social media and the importance of it on the learners

education.

Understanding Social Media

Social media colonized us nowadays. It is evident because social

media dominate us. In the way we live and move, social media is there

and always being there. According to Techopedia (n.d.) social media is

a Web 2.O development and it is founded by a user-driven concept

interactive web. Blogs, message boards, and chat rooms are an

essence of social media, but it is more strongly identified, such as

Facebook, twitter, etc. In addition, social media are interactive Web

2.O Internet-based applications. Text post, sharing photos or video,

and date information using online transaction are the lifeblood of

social media. (Wikipedia, n.d.).

According to Daniel Nation (2019) social media can be

expressed in two words: social part and media part. The social part

refers to the interactions to other people, while the media part refers

to a means of communication. In addition, Tufts University (n.d.)

defined social media as a medium of creating a connection to the

people, which they create or exchanged information. Furthermore,

social media is a form of e-communication that enable user to create

communities online. It allows them to share information and related

content. (Merriam Webster Dictionary, n.d.). Cambridge Dictionary

(n.d.) defined social media as a website and a computer program. It

allows user to share or even communicate using internet through

mobile phones or computer. In the other side, social media include

internet to connect people with their friends or acquaintances

(ACCAN, n.d.).

Defining Social Platforms

Techopedia (n.d.) defined social platform as a web-based

technology. It enables the development and management of social

media services. It provides the creation of social media websites and

services. In addition, social platform is also an operating system. It

controls the power or social connectivity to distribute applications.

(O’Neill, 2018). Maxsemblante (n.d.) stated that social media platforms

are not about Facebook. It also includes the websites that are

commonly used educationally. On the other side, the changes of

technology are the reason of social media evolution. It has been

created comply with the needs of individuals. In addition, a media

platform is a method of delivering media of an audience; it allows

feedback, discussion, or sharing. (Lemasney, 2016).

Philippines Social Media Status

Philippines is much known as active social media users. ABS-

CBN News (2018) stated that Philippines developed as the nation that

invested the most energy in internet based life clients. Goes through

very nearly 4 hours on various stages pursued by Brazilians and

Indonesians. There are presently 4.021 billion web clients worldwide

as of January, at least 2018 that half of worldwide populace.

In addition, Camus (2018) stated that web utilization in the

Knowing Social Media Benefits on Learners

Social media is beneficial in our everyday lives. Gupta (2015)

stated the social media performs a great role in the learners.

Accessing information and communication via social media made the

life of the learners convenient. Teacher and learners can build a

connection via social media, and it is possibly beneficial in the aspect

of education. In addition, social media help learners to build

friendship to his/her classmates. It is more useful for team projects.

On the other hand, it is helpful to uplift the students to work on their

projects. (Hopkins, 2018). Dlamini (n.d.) stated that social media

helps students in research. Furthermore, students can work their

assignments and research. All of that is impossible with social media.

On the other side, Gonzales (n.d.) specified can help students get

information in term of urgency.

Learning Online Info (n.d.) stated that in social media, learners

can discuss class materials, assignments, and feedbacks. On the

other side, Education Technology (2018) stated that social media can

help learners in accessing every expert in some fields. You can follow

them and you can download useful content which can produce great

results. Fox (2017), quantified that social media websites produced

vast information with millions of references. Aside from gaming and

music, learners can find beneficial content to answer their questions.

Aside from that, social media help learners to share views opinions.

They can have exchanged helpful information to the class also.

Jain (n.d.) stated social media is a medium where learners build

connections for their careers. It also helps students to become

interactive and inclusive. In addition, Efrebo (2015) stated social

media helps learners in making their assignments more correct. It

gives information or feedback that’s why it’s beneficial for them.

Furthermore, social media build connections between learners and

his/her mentor. The ability of having strong connection can reach

success. (Stoller, 2015). Lastly, Mysak (2014) stated social media at

school is beneficial. You can easily communicate, up-to-date

information, and communication people around the world.
