Chapter 1

Introduction

Rationale of the Study

High school life would probably be the happiest moment of a student’s life.

It marks the time where one becomes young adults. Boys are transforming into

young men, while girls are blooming into beautiful young women. By this time

around, one gets to meet their best of friends, their study buddies, their partners in

crime, their soon to be partner in life and also where one have started to overcome

their fears. It is an exciting moment as it may seem but so much of one’s future

depends on the way how they perform in school. Students also have to deal with

stress on a day-to-day basis and stress could affect them in a positive or negative

way depending on how they handle it.

For the longest time, people assumed that the student population was the

least affected by any sort of stress or problems. Stress is now understood as a

lifestyle crisis (Masih & Gulrez, 2006) affecting any individual regardless of their

developmental stage (Banerjee & Chatterjee, 2016).

Stress and dealing with stress are phenomena closely intertwined with

human life (Shahmohammadi, 2011). They relate to all minor and major events in

life (Shahmohammadi, 2011). Stress is the body's natural defense against

predators and danger. It flushes the body with hormones to prepare systems to

evade or confront danger. This is known as the "fight-or-flight" mechanism. Stress

can be a motivator. It can be essential to survival. The "fight-or-flight" mechanism

8

can tell us when and how to respond to danger. However, if this mechanism is

triggered too easily, or when there are too many stressors at one time, it can

undermine a person's mental and physical health and become harmful.

Every individual experiences stress occasionally. Many criteria are used to

categorize stress, and this leads to many terms for different types of stress. One

of these criteria focuses on the causes of stress, and it generates such terms as

marital stress, familial stress, work-related stress and academic stress. In this

study, the researchers will only focus on academic stress.

Academic stress is the anxiety and stress that comes from schooling and

education .There is a lot of pressure that comes along with pursuing their

education. Students report experiencing academic stress at predictable times each

semester with the greatest sources of academic stress resulting from taking and

studying for exams, grade competition, and the large amount of content to master

in a small amount of time (Abouserie, 1994).

Sometimes students feel lost, overwhelmed, frozen, or unable to cope when

confronted with so many tasks (Essel & Owusu, 2017). Busy schedules crammed

with studies, study, and extracurricular activities can take a toll on student’s

physical and mental health, especially if one is not eating or sleeping properly

(Essel & Owusu, 2017).

To prevent negative outcomes associated with stress, such as suicide or

more commonly among students, depression and anxiety the researchers must
9

measure students’ stress to help those in need to improve their coping strategies

so they can manage stress and thereby improve their quality of life.

Stress management involves understanding the psychology behind or that

is causing the stress and finding strategies to deal with, reduce, or eliminate the

stress (Jadoun, Kushwah, Barodiya, & Holani 2012). Stress can result from

viewing yourself or your situations negatively or with insecurity solutions (Jadoun,

Kushwah, Barodiya, & Holani 2012). Stress reduction results from managing or

viewing situations in a positive way, taking action, organizing, planning, and finding

solutions (Jadoun, Kushwah, Barodiya, & Holani 2012).

In this study, the researchers examined Grade 11 students at “Tanjay City

Science High School” (TCSHS) for the school year 2019-2020.

The objectives of the study are: 1) measure students’ stress levels; 2)

identify their main sources of stress and the effects of it; and to 3) come up with

approaches on managing academic stress.

10

Statement of the Problem

The major purpose of the study is to assess the factors responsible for

students' stress and its relation to the academic performance of the students in

Tanjay City Science High School. Specifically, this study seeks:

1. What are the demographic profile of the respondents?

a. Age

b. Gender

c. Grade Level

2. What are the Causes and Effects of Stress to the academic performance of the

students?

3. What are the causes and effects of the students stress in his or her academic

performance?

4. To what extent does academic stress affects students?

Real Hypothesis:

H1 - Managing academic stress can help the Grade 11 students to be more

productive.
11

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses on the causes and effects and approaches on managing

academic stress among students of Tanjay City Science High School in Tanjay

City.

The study covers A Survey of Academic Performance of the Grade XI

Students of Tanjay City Science High School, Cluster II for the school year 2019-

2020.
12

Significance of the Study

The result and findings of this study about the students' stress in relation to

academic performance of the SHS students of Tanjay City Science High School

will both benefit the students, teacher and also to the other researchers.

The results of the study will be of great help to the following:

A. Students Can benefit most in this study. They are the primary reason

why the researchers conduct this study. It aims to provide a varied learning

approach in dealing with student academic stress. It aims to help the students to

be productive.

B. Parents will be aware of the factors that affects the academic performance

of their children. Thus they will build guidance and raise successful individuals.

C. School administrator- to be guided in the modification of educational

policies curriculum and strategies toward to more effective delivery of learning.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. 1 has Input, Process, and Output of the Research. It all started

with the input. The researchers create the Input base on the statement of the

problem such as the demographic profile of the respondents, Causes and

Effects of Academic Stress among the respondents and their approaches in

Managing Academic Stress, and also the levels of stress that affects the

students.

In the second part of the study of the researcher it talks about the processes

in creating a survey. The process includes the formulation of questions,

formulation of questionnaires, floating of questions, interpretation and analysis

of the data. This is a tool to make the researchers study and collecting datas

easier.

After the input and process it falls down in creating the output which is the

title of the study of the researcher. The output entitled Causes, Effects and

Approaches in Managing Academic Stress of Grade 11 students of Tanjay City

Science High School during SY: 2019-2020.

Theoretical Framework

Schematic Diagram 2 shows the relationship between the two theories such

as Hans Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome of Stress Theory and Cognitive

Appraisal Theory.

This study was guided by the theory on General Adaptation of Stress and

Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping. This theories are applied in order for

the respondents to be aware and help them in dealing with various stress. The

theory of General Adaption of Stress has three stages process wherein it describes

the physiological changes the body goes through when under stress. Hans Selye

identified this stages such as Alarm, Resistance and Exhaustion. Alarm Reaction

Stage refers to the initial symptoms experiences under stress. After the initial

shock of a stressful event and having a fight or flight response the resistance stage

follows. In this stage your body appears to function normally, however your

physical and mental thinking are at ‘action station’. If the Resistance Stage

continues for too long it may lead to Exhaustion Stage. In this stage you may

develop chronic stress such as fatigue, burnout, depression, anxiety and many

more. The longer you deal with stress, the more harmful it is to your health.

On the other hand Cognitive Appraisal Theory, is a model in response to

a stressor we establish if there is a threat, employ coping strategies and then

reassesses the threat which results in identification of emotional responses.
