Do you know some of the famous artists? Do you think art is really important? If
your answer is no, you better think twice.

Art is present in so many places we go to and the things that we do. We see art
everywhere. The design of your shirt, the paintings in our school, and even when
we scroll Instagram posts, there is art. We walk our paths through the city every
day, and we see how the buildings are carefully designed and how the
billboards are strategically done. Who made it? The artist! But why do elderlies
always say that taking art courses is, useless?

An education in the arts is widely acknowledged to be good for the soul: it

promotes creativity, lateral thinking and an appreciation for some of the more
beautiful or interesting parts of human endeavor. But as a way to make money,
arts degrees are often seen as a gamble. Compared to fields like business,
engineering or technology, the arts just aren't the easiest place to make a living.
Yet according to a new report, most arts students are making it work even if the
arts education they received doesn’t meet the required standard.

In our country, a lot of people have considered art useless. "What will you do
with your art? Will it feed you and put a roof over your head?" These are the
common questions anyone who wants to pursue art gets asked.

Add to this the fact that we are shackled to our culture, which generally
considers the likes of doctors, engineers and attorneys as the definition of
success, the pillars of our economy, the pride of their hometown and their
parents.

If we look around, art is everywhere. It is so common that we hardly see it. Who
says you can’t get anything from art? In fact, some of the artists like Vicente
Manansala sold his oil painting “Machinery” worth approximately P13.7 million.
Who knows the famous artist Fernando Amorsolo? He already earned P20.3
million just by selling his art “Lavanderas”. Well, it is really a big amount of
money, isn’t it?

Art can make a community more beautiful. It makes the spaces we work in
more interesting. Our homes reflect our personalities through the art we choose
to display. It can inspire us, make us happy, or even motivate us.
Art may not be a vocational subject – that is, one that leads to a specific career
– but this doesn’t mean it won’t be a good preparation for the world of work.

Whether you choose to specialize in fine art or the history of art, the skills you
gain during your degree are likely to be highly valued and transferable to many
sectors, including specialized art careers as well as many general graduate
roles. Alongside a range of practical arts skills, art graduates should also have
good observational, analytical and research skills, including the ability to solve
problems creatively and work well both independently and in groups.

Me as an artist, I can see how my co-artist earned a lot of money through arts.
Some of them get paid more likely one thousand for just one portrait. Well, it
depends on the quality, the materials used in making the art and the skills of the
artist itself.
It takes courage, sleepless nights, and so many hours of practice just to produce
a great art that can capture one’s soul. Even they say art is useless, even they
have millions of reason to prove that art is useless, I will always find one reason
that proves art is worth learning for.
