CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Social media sites became the leading way of communication even from the other side of the

world to a few kilometres away from it. These platforms provide a variety of services that aid or

entertain users such as Ipil National High school Students to be more precise. Nowadays more

often than not everyone keeps an eye on their own social media accounts wherein they can show

to the people their expressions about anything under the sun or share sensitive conversations with

those they trust. The Students’ use of social media has, have and will continue to create

challenges and issues for higher education professionals yet keeping such problems at bay has

proven difficult because of the speed at which new technologies are being introduced. So

whether such effects can be debilitating to the performance the students is a priority the

researchers have taken into account

Despite such complications, social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-

connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, trade ideas, share content

and pictures, and many other activities. Users can stay updated of the latest global and local

developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use

social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business prospects. Students can

collaborate with their peers to improve their academic proficiency and communication skills.

You can learn about different cultures and societies by connecting with people in other countries.

“While nobody can deny that Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Twitter and other social media

websites have altered the landscape of social interaction, particularly among young people such

as INHS students
Statement of the Problem

Primarily, this study has been undertaken to determine the effects of using social media
sites on the 10th grade high school students of Ipil national high school academically, socially

and personally, In line with this; we would like to answer the following specific questions:

1. How often/long do students use social media sites for school purposes? Social and

personal purposes? Do students spend more time in social networking sites as compared

to the time spent on their studying?

2. What are the positive and negative effects of social media sites to the academic

performances Ipil national high school students? Can negative effects be minimized and

if so how?

3. What social media websites are usually visited more frequently, does it differ with gender

and other factors?

4. Do social networking sites help or bring problem to the academic performances of Ipil

national high school students?

Objectives of the Research

This research about the effects of social networking sites aims:

1 To know what are the effects of social networking sites to students.


2 To enlighten those student users about the effects of using too much social networking

3 To know if these social networking sites affects the academic performance of the students

4 And if such negative exists can it be minimized through practice and mastery or restriction

Hypothesis

This research study is guided by the following hypotheses to determine the relationship between

and among variables under investigation:

 A student who spends more time in social media sites than school activities indicate

negative circumstances upon the individual’s school performance.

 There more haphazard factors that would likely influence the students performance and

attitude than social media sites.

Significance of the Study

This study could:

 Help the high school students realize the positive and negative effects of using social

networking sites in relation to their studies.


 Help raise awareness among the students regarding moderation and control for social

media use, and also awareness for more negatively affecting factors other than the

mentioned sites

 Make the parents aware of the role of advanced technology in the lives of their children.

 Make the Teachers realize, that proper guidance of their students is necessary as to the

use of Social Networking sites so that their studies will not be affected.

 Make the Administrators understand the good and bad effect of the social media and
networking sites to the students’ study habits.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses on determining the effects of using social networking sites to the

school life of 10th Grade high school students from Ipil national high school. Facebook, Youtube,

Flickr, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Tagged and the like are included in the study. 10th Grade high

school students from Ipil national high school and some input from concerned faculty members

and to a greater extent parental input are included in the study, however certain limitations have

been place upon the study the researchers are bound by a time range for completion that might

lead to discrepancy in data analysis and speaking of discrepancy the method of delivering a

survey and correspondence heavily rely upon the students honesty and cooperation and as such is

greatly vulnerable to non compliance, non cooperation and dishonest data.

Definition of terms

In order to understand clearly the subject matter, we define the following key concepts: social

networking sites, and academic performance, as they are essential to fully comprehend the issue

in focus.
SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES:

“Social networking sites are social network services that focus on building online communities

of people who share interests and/or activities,or who are interested in exploring the interests and

activities of others.’’

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE:

“Academic performance refers to how students deal with their studies and how they cope with or

accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers.”
