to school with a new pair of
shoes from New Birth Missionary
Baptist Church.
The Stonecrest church hosted a shoe
giveaway during its back-to-school event
Aug. 3. Last month, church members
donated shoes for the annual event. Senior
Pastor Dr. Jamal Bryant said 4,500 pairs New Birth church members and community members donated 4,500 pairs of shoes. Photos by Carla Parker

Let’s Move is an
initiative launched by
former first lady Michelle
Obama. The initiative is
meant to address childhood
obesity and provides parents
with information about
healthy lifestyle choices and
snack options. The initiative
is also sponsored by The
Center Helping Obesity in
Children End Successfully
(C.H.O.I.C.E.S), a
grassroots organization
formed in April 2002 to join
the fight against childhood
obesity, according to
organization officials.

event in Decatur gave

backpacks. According to

Before DeKalb County School District (DCSD)
had its first day of school, community members, were
invited to celebrate the upcoming school year during
its “One DeKalb” Back-to-School Rally July 27.
The rally featured live entertainment, food,
refreshments, school supplies, health and dental
screenings and free groceries. According to district
officials, more than 1,000 community members and
students attended the event.
“This [was] a family reunion,” said DCSD
Superintendent R. Stephen Green. “This rally [was]
about showing everyone what DeKalb County School
District and DeKalb County is all about. We’re about
celebrating our students. We’re about helping our
community. We [were there] to kick off the 2019-2020
school year in style.”
