—Frederick Franck, author of The Zen of Seeing

Dear Friend,

Inner Directions has been publishing books and other media since the early 1990s. During that time, we’ve expe-
rienced the ups and downs of a sometimes-unpredictable economy, endued several distributor bankruptcies that
almost finished us, and watched a general downturn in the book market. Through it all, Inner Directions has en-
dured because our readers believe our collection to be exceptional and important. Each title presents an original
perspective, with a clarity and insight that can only come from the experience of ultimate reality. It is this singular
quality that profoundly touches the reader’s heart and has allowed us to continue publishing.

the search for happiness

Realizing the Absolute Happiness of our True Nature
Bernard Harmand
Pages: 168 • Size: 6” x 9” • Price: $14.95

If you are searching for abiding happiness, then the pointers in this book will
certainly help show the way home. If you have been longing to know the nature of
true peace, these profound yet spirited dialogues between Bernard Harmand and
his inquirers can open you to a radically different way of perceiving who you are
and what the nature of true happiness really is.
Bernard Harmand lived much of his life as a devout Catholic, fervently dedicated
to realizing the highest spiritual truth of Christianity. His lifelong search ultimately
brought him to the nondual teachings of Advaita Vedanta, especially as embodied
by the contemporary Indian sage Ramana Maharshi, where his quest culminated
in the realization of his true nature. Bernard currently spends his days living in the
countryside outside of Dijon, France.
Throughout The Search for Happiness, sincere seekers of truth pose essential
questions that Bernard refreshingly explores, and his answers never resort to dogma
or belief. He responds as an authentic, loving presence who guides without guiding

“In the Search for Happiness, Bernard Harmand takes us on a deep, paradoxical journey that
ends in the re-discovery of the source of true happiness: our own Self. Harmand’s passion for

The myth of enlightenment
Seeing Through the Illusion of Separation
Karl Renz
Pages: 232 • Size: 6” x 9” • Price: $15.95

Whether you meet Karl Renz in person or through this book, the encounter will leave
you with a radically different sense of yourself. Karl’s unique ability lies in exposing
the beliefs we’ve built our lives on, beginning with our root sense of individuality.
Our current predicament is the result of believing ourselves to be something other
than what we really are. This self-imposed limitation causes our incessant searching
and suffering.
Throughout these dialogues, Karl unceasingly brings us back to the truth of our
real nature by helping us recognize the fleeting and impermanent nature of the self
we’ve come to believe in. Even momentarily seeing the truth of who we really are
immediately frees us, if only temporarily, from these self-imposed limitations. Karl’s
purpose—if we can say he even has one—is to reflect our own divinity, which he
skillfully and uncompromisingly expresses throughout the pages of this book. By
realizing the implication of his words, we can live life to its fullest and experience

Douglas Harding is a highly regarded philosopher and spiritual teacher and

the author of many books, including the contemporary classic On Having No
Head. His unique method of awakening to the Source, of seeing “who” we really
are, is original, effective, direct, and practical. Harding’s inspired approach is
conversant with the spirit and conclusions of modern science and is affirmed by
the immediate evidence of our senses rather
than by speculative belief. At the same
time, Harding is thoroughly versed in the
teachings of the world’s great mystics and

Embracing Our Natural State of Presence
Tony Parsons
Pages: 200 • Size: 6” x 9” • Price: $15.95

Invitation to Awaken is a radical call to liberate ourselves from the mistaken belief
that we exist as a separate individual. This simple yet profound message, conveyed
in a clear and often humorous manner, helps free us from our self-imposed
limitations. When we recognize our true nature, we express the freedom that is
our natural state and birthright.
These new dialogues with Tony Parsons, recorded from talks in Southern
California, deepens the exploration that he began in his best-selling book, As It
Is. This refreshingly original and timeless message has the power to demystify our
long-held concepts about spiritual awakening and cut through the subtle mental
concepts that obscure our natural state of Presence.
Rather than adopt an approach that perpetuates the existence of an
apparent separate self, Parsons urges us to drop all effort to become realized and
discover the liberating truth that we already are what we seek.

Access the Power of Your Naturally Peaceful Mind
Bertram W. Salzman
Pages: 176 • Size: 6” xz 9” • Price: $15.95

At the age of eight, Bert Salzman experienced a profound mystical transformation

amid an environment of deep despair. This event radically changed his experience
of life, bringing with it an experience of universal love and lasting happiness. At
that time, young Bert made a promise to himself to discover the source of this
transformation. At age fifty, while at the height of his career in film and television
as an Academy Award-winning director, Salzman abandoned Broadway and
Hollywood to fulfill his earlier promise. For the following twelve years, he lived in
a small cottage in the French countryside, spending his time in deep contemplation
and meditative inquiry.
Through meetings with J. Krishnamurti and other philosopher/mystics,
Salzman found himself firmly established at the heart of all spiritual fruition: the
peace and joy that is our essential nature. He discovered the source of the spiritual
joy he had first tasted as a schoolboy, and that illumination returned and became

the depth of Ramana’s Realization and the direct method of Self-

“the greatest sage of the twentieth century.” The Essential Teachings of
Ramana Maharshi contains concise, compelling aphorisms that reflect
the essence of his teachings. These profound sayings, set against a
background of exceptional photographs, help us experience the deep
meditative silence which is our natural state. This compilation of
wisdom teachings is based in the truth of nonduality and reveals that
whichever path we follow, we can realize the profound peace of our

Classic!

This spiritually significant work is a profound series of dialogues between one of

the greatest sages of our time and his inquirers. These “Talks” offer a genuinely
universal approach to Truth by directly pointing to the certainty of our essential
nature. By applying even a few of these passages to our life, we can become aware
of the ever-present, abiding Reality.
The great Indian sage Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) had the unique gift
of embodying the highest wisdom in the most ordinary manner. His words, full of
insight and understanding, express the authentic experience of Enlightenment.
For decades, they have guided people from diverse backgrounds and traditions
to the Source of enduring peace and happiness. Through the wise words of this
beloved sage, we are clearly and consistently shown how to reclaim our innate
Freedom—simply by looking in the right place and discovering what has always
been present. A fundamental shift of attention is all that is required. By approach-

Arthur Osborne was a man of brilliant intellect and introspective spirit. After
he graduated from Oxford, his inner longing to experience the Supreme Reality
ultimately brought him to the hermitage of the great Indian sage Sri Ramana Ma-
harshi. In Ramana’s presence, Osborne’s literary abilities flourished, and he became
a vehicle for the genuine spiritual understanding that awakened within him.
For Those with Little Dust is a special collection of articles that Osborne wrote
for The Mountain Path, the highly acclaimed spiritual journal he founded and
edited. These selections cover an extraordinary range of topics that are grounded
in the fundamental truth of advaita (nonduality), in the light of Ramana Maharshi’
teachings.
These essays cover almost every question one faces on the spiritual journey:
meditation, self-effort and effortlessness, action and nonaction, Self and ego, and
the question of suffering. People from all traditions and religions will find this book

As It Is
The Open Secret of Spiritual Awakening
By Tony Parsons
Pages: 160 • Size: 6” x 9” • Photos: 24 • Price: $14.95

As It Is is a profound and radical work that points to the fundamental freedom that
is independent of path, process, effort, or belief. In these pages, the reader is taken
on a journey, which clearly reveals that there is nothing to become, nor is there a
specific goal to attain. Rather, what is shown is how a deep-rooted misperception
of our true identity has caused us to live in “apparent” pain and fear.
Tony Parsons is an esteemed teacher who regularly shares this “open secret”
of spiritual awakening with people throughout the world. His straightforward
and highly effective message of awakening to life “as it is,” is delivered with an
impersonal authority that emanates from absolute clarity.

Through the direct perception of “what is, as it is,” Tony Parsons offers the reader
a very practical and accessible approach to authentic spiritual realization. His
invitation is to live life from a wholly different perspective—one centered in the
infinite awareness of one’s Self.

Cutting Through the Conditioned Mind
By Stephen Jourdain • Edited by Gilles Farcet
Pages: 200 • Size: 6” x 9” • Photos: 28 • Price: $14.95

At the age of sixteen, Stephen Jourdain experienced a radical awakening while

contemplating (in the manner of a Zen koan) the famous Descartes statement
“I think, therefore I am.” As a result of this fundamental change in perception—
and at that very moment—the essential basis of Jourdain’s identity collapsed
once and for all, as he realized the truth of what all of us essentially are: the
fundamental “I” principle, or Consciousness.
Radical Awakening is a collection of extraordinary dialogues between Jourdain
and the well-known writer Gilles Farcet. These spirited talks—provocative and
highly original—offer the reader an exceptional vantage point into the nature
of authentic spiritual awakening and its embodiment. Jourdain lives the gift
of awakening in the most ordinary manner, clearly articulating both the real-
ity and the myth of enlightenment through deep understanding and piercing
discernment. His passionate call to awaken to our true nature is delivered in a
completely original manner, with the spontaneity of a child and the deep insight
of one who lives in a state of natural freedom.
The author of more than twelve books, Jourdain is highly respected throughout

Zen and the Rediscovery of the Obvious
By Douglas E. Harding
Pages: 128 • Size: 6” x 9” • Illustrations: 9 • Price: $12.95

“Headlessness,” the experience of the no-self that mystics of all times have aspired
to, is an instantaneous way of “waking up” and becoming fully aware of one’s real
and abiding nature. Douglas Harding, the highly respected mystic-philosopher,
describes his first experience of headlessness in On Having No Head, the classic
work first published in 1961. In this book, he conveys the immediacy, simplicity,
and practicality of the “headless way,” placing it within a Zen context, while also
drawing parallels to practices in other spiritual traditions.
If you wish to experience the freedom and clarity that results from firsthand
experience of true Being, then this book will serve as a practical guide to the
rediscovery of what has always been present

Douglas Harding’s On Having No Head: Zen And The Rediscovery Of The Obvious is a philosophical look at “headlessness”, or the
psychological state of “no-self” of mysticism that opens one’s mind and senses to the workings of internal and external nature.
Harding places “the headless way” within a Zen context, as well as comparing it to other spiritual traditions in this insightful and
thought-provoking treatise.

Face to No -Face
Rediscovering Our Original Nature
By Douglas E. Harding • Edited by David Lang
Pages: 224 • Size: 6” x 9” • Illustrations: 9 • Price: $15.95

Face to No-Face is the latest published work of Douglas Harding, one of the most
respected mystic/philosophers of our time. The author of numerous books on
spiritual awakening, including the widely acclaimed On Having No Head, Harding
offers an approach to realizing the limitless “No-Face” that is completely unique
and highly practical. This is his first book based on dialogues and conversations,
and it truly captures the spirit of this remarkable man in a manner both humor-
ous and personal. Harding’s writings have been acclaimed by Huston Smith, C.
S. Lewis, and Ram Dass for their great originality and simplicity of approach.
In this distinctive series of dialogues, Harding discusses the fundamental
issue of life: how to awaken to the natural freedom that is our true self. Through
a series of “exercises,” he guides us to where we can clearly perceive our original
nature. From this vantage point, we see that who we really are is not limited to
our face and the self behind the face, but is instead the limitless “No-Face,” the
infinite and eternal essence that is both absolutely free and at the same time
identified with all existence. The rediscovery of “oneself” by oneself is the prin-
cipal theme, and Harding articulates “the way home” in a manner that is always refreshingly
authentic.

Look for Yourself
The Science and Art of Self-Realization
By Douglas E. Harding
Pages: 240 • Size: 6” x 9” • Illustrations: 17 • Price: $15.95

This book is an outstanding collection of essays by Douglas Harding, author of the

contemporary spiritual classic On Having No Head. In Look for Yourself, the esteemed
mystic/philosopher helps us to discover what is so obvious about our true nature,
yet so easily overlooked. The book is, in effect, a heartfelt challenge to the reader
to awaken to the true identity that is (as Harding makes evident) more wonderful
than any of us can imagine, and easier to perceive than anything in the world.
The writings convey exactly how and where to look in order to find this trea-
sure of sanity and well-being. What’s more, they verify the immense personal and
universal implications of awakening to our infinite nature.
Douglas Harding’s work represents a breakthrough in communicating the ex-
perience and meaning of true identity. Combining insight and humor in his char-
acteristic fashion, Harding leads us toward the rediscovery of “oneself” by oneself,
articulating the way home in a manner that is always fresh and authentic.

Seeing One’s Original Nature
Douglas E. Harding
Time: 55 Minutes • Price: $24.95 (DVD or Video)

Douglas Harding is a highly respected mystic/philosopher who has written

more than a dozen books. For more than fifty years, Douglas has been sharing
with people around the world a unique method for rediscovering the most
obvious aspect of ourselves: the truth of our fundamental identity.
In this informal talk from his home in England, Douglas stimulates
his audience to find out the nature of their own reality, using a variety of
“experiments”-simple deep-awareness exercises that lead one to the center
of harmony and peace; the very nature of our real being. Practicing the
principles in On Having No Head can bring us to see “who” we really are,
in the truest sense of the term.
In this DVD, Douglas shows us how to “see” the truth of our original
nature through the process of inward-turning. The result is an experience of
untainted peace and happiness, which is our true nature-forgotten through
lifelong identification with the objective world.

Ram Dass and Krishna Das at the 1999 Inner Directions Gathering
Bertram W. Salzman, Director
Time: 120 Minutes • Price: $24.95 (DVD or Video)

After a major stroke, Ram Dass returns with a vibrant joy and deepened
wisdom, resulting from a profound encounter with Silence. In this DVD, he
joins with singer Krishna Das for a very special presentation. This remark-
able event is like a circle: Ram Dass speaks about his stroke as an act of
grace, and about the profound gift of silence he has been given, while the
melodious chanting of Krishna Das carries the words home to the heart.
This is an inspiring video, which demonstrates that the silence of Spirit
and the eternal chant of India both emanate from the same source.
Ram Dass, the brilliant orator, still funny and poignant, demonstrates
how life’s difficulties can bring strength and true happiness. Inspiring and
magical, this video captures the changes in Ram Dass’s inner and outer
life and shows that the two are, in fact, not different.

An Interior Journey
Time: 83 Minutes • Price: $24.95 (DVD or Video)

Abhishiktananda was an extraordinary truth seeker. Arriving in India in

the late 1940s, Dom Henri Le Saux, OSB (his Christian monastic name),
attempted to grasp the significance of Advaita Vedanta (nonduality) in the
context of his own Christian beliefs. In India, Abhishiktananda lived the
ascetic life of a simple mendicant and cave dweller, observing periods of
silence, much the same way the Desert Fathers did. Rather than theorize
about the truth of his spiritual path, he chose to experience it. And experi-
ence it he did, in abundance.
Abhishiktananda initially met the great sage Ramana Maharshi, then
later spent many months in caves upon the sacred Arunachala Mountain,
in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. This remarkable video on the life of
Abhishiktananda follows his path throughout India: from the beginnings of
Shantivanam, the hermitage he founded in South India, to his wanderings
in the Himalayan foothills. The rich details of his inner life and experiences
are beautifully narrated through his own words.

Bede Griffiths and the Hindu-Christian Contemplative Experience
Time: 52 Minutes • Price: $24.95 (DVD or Video)

Dom Bede Griffiths’ interest in Eastern philosophy began in England

with early readings of the Bhagavad Gita and the Dhammapada. In 1968,
Abhishiktananda left for a solitary life in the Himalayas and invited Bede
Griffiths to take over the ashram. At Shantivanam, Father Bede lived a
life of prayer and meditation, blending the contemplative practices of both
Christianity and Hinduism.
The Space in the Heart of the Lotus captures the heart of the Indian
spirit and its sacred traditions. Set against beautiful scenes of Indian life in
a Christian Hermitage, these personal interviews with Father Bede reveal
his deep love, spiritual insight, and reflections on meditative practice.

Griffiths reveals himself to be an unusually ecumenical man, finding wisdom in the Gita, Dhammapada and Dao de

they echoed the things that he had come to believe independently of the Bible.

changes that have taken place in his way of life and in the depths of his soul.

The Art of Dying
Tibetan Voices from Mustang
Time: 60 Minutes • Price: $24.95 (DVD or Video)

This is the story of an ancient culture tucked away among the largest
mountains in the world. It is a rugged land, one whose joyful people strive
to sustain themselves against great odds. While The Art of Dying explores
the treatment of death as practiced in this ancient Buddhist culture, this
film is more a celebration of life!
The Danish filmmakers underwent great difficulties to capture present-
day Mustang, which was once part of the hidden Tibetan kingdom. Their
creative photography is often startling in detail as it delicately captures
the majesty of the landscape to make this absorbing visual record.
The people of Mustang are shown in the modern time warp they now
find themselves living in. The slow-moving scenes allow one to soak up
the extraordinary images, while the dialogue reflects the voice of the lo-
cal people: simple villagers, the King of Mustang, and Buddhist monks.
Anyone interested in Tibet, its people, and its culture, will find this to be
a deeply moving film

“The initial seeing into your Nature is simplicity
itself: once noticed, Nothing is so obvious! But it
is operative only in so far as it is practiced. The
results—freedom from greed and hate and fear
and delusion—are assured only while the One
they belong to isn’t overlooked.”
—Douglas E. Harding
