Now in simple way I rotated this ball and you can see you have lines that run vertically north to
south. So lines, which run vertically north to south, are known as Longitudes.

So you have lines running in north south direction and are known as meridian. So you have 1
degree line for 36 degree. So 1 degree include 4 minutes. You would have 24 hours; we say one
rotation is completed in 24 hours. So you have longitudes. I repeat lines are known as a meridian
if they run north and south. The meridian with 0 degree is known as a prime meridian. Standard

reference point is called UTC, coordination universal time and if this is 0 degree line directly
opposite to it which is this one would be 180 degree and this 180 degree line would be known as
International date line. Now why will we call it as date line? It is because when we move east to
west from the dateline you have the day changes so if I say today is 4th august it would change to
5th august. So you would have change in a day as you cross an international dateline. Not so case
with the Greenwich meridian.

Understanding here, you have a simple diagram is example here, now I have some point given
here, for explanation if I want to see I can see point “a” and point “b” are on the same longitudes
because longitudes are perpendicular. Again you have “c” and “d” that would have same
longitudes. So a and b would have a common longitudes, c and d have a common longitudes.

However talking about the latitude a and e running on same horizontal line. They would have
same latitude and they are on same parallel. Longitudes are known as a meridian and they runs
north to south. All points are same north south point, would have same longitudes or same
meridian. All the points which are same parallel would be a known as a same latitude and they
runs east to west.

Now whenever we talk about, the horizontal line they are some basic things very important as I
said to complete earth we cover 360 degree. So let again see a ball I start with ball again. So, you
have this is the axis point so I takes this here, this is a 0(zero) degree and this pole covered 360
degree so half of it would be 180 and the half of it would 180 degree. Now this would be 180 east
and that would be 180 is west.
