ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS EFFECTS OF WEB SERIES

STREAMING ONLINE ON INTERNET ON INDIAN YOUTH

ABSTRACT

The study investigates the effects of web series shows run on Internet online channels
like Netflix,Amezon prime ,You tube, Alt Balaji, Eros, Cheers, Hot star etc on Indian youth.
On the basis of the debate on violent content of media and their effects, I firmly examined the
perception of youth regarding web series shows run on online Internet channels and what are
the psychological effects of such shows on youth. The main direction of the study was to
place the discussion of web series shows effects. The study was executed by using
quantitative methodology of research. Using the questionnaire research method I requested
100 respondents (people who watch the web series) to fill the questionnaire that contained
multiple choice of questions. It was a case study 100 participants were selected from
Kolhapur city.

INTRODUCTION
We are living in the Internet world. Everything is possible with the help of Internet and
mobile gazettes. Peoples are more addicted to Internet and Mobile gazettes. One new disorder
is arriving in Youth “Internet addiction Disorder”. Indian young youth now a days only
follows Netflix, Amazon prime, Hot star, You tube. They ignore their studies, work, family,
friends.Every time every second youth opens the mobile screen, Laptop screen, Tab screen
and watching the web series only. In Oct 2018 Indies first Netflix addicted person found in
Bangalore. Crime based web series are very popular in youth of India. People do not only
spend great time while watching crime shows but they also learn specific ideas and thoughts.
Web series can be educational as well as entertaining. It can give people the opportunity to
travel around the globe, expose them to new ideas that they might not have encountered from
their community and also a chance to learn about different cultures. Pro-social messages from
shows on web series will give a positive impact on the behavior of today‟s youth. However,
these youths are more likely to learn negative values from these web series. A day in a
youth‟s life will generally be filled with activities such as playing with friends, reading, doing
homework and being physically active but this can be easily replaced with the presence of
web series. This is detrimental to their physical and mental development. Thus if these youth
are glued and become addicted to these programs on internet they will have lesser time to
interact with human beings. This is crucial, as it can retard their normal physical and social
development and skills. Hence, the burning question here is, do web series programs affect
the attitude of today‟s youth?
As we all know, youths are more likely to imitate and adapts ones behavior into their own
because they can easily relate to what is shown on web series. There surely will be a lot of
behavioral changes in youths today if they are exposed to excessive violence shown on web
series. These kinds of programs will encourage these youths to be aggressive in both their
behavior and in their thoughts. Not only that, they will also be more likely to be influenced

with what they have seen regularly like smoking and drinking scenes which are shown
frequently in these web series programs and even commercials. This will encourage the
development of such unhealthy habits at an early age. Here are the some points we should
think properly.

1. Indian Youth watch excessive amounts of web series on internet.

The average Indian Youth watches nearly 6-8 hrs of web series each day. By his/her
graduation, the average teen will have spent more time watching web series than in
the classroom .
2. There is a relationship between watching violent web series programming and an
increase in violent behavior by Youth.
3. Excessive web series watching contributes to the increased incidence of depression,
obesity & Eyes disorders.
4. Excessive web series watching may have a deleterious effect on learning and
academic performance.
5. Watching certain programs may encourage irresponsible sexual behavior.

6. Sexuality -Today, web series has become a leading sex educator in India. Web series
exposes children to adult sexual behaviors‟ in ways that portray these actions as normal and
risk-free, sending the message that because these behaviors‟ are frequent, „everybody does
it‟. Sex between unmarried partners is shown 24 times more often than sex between spouses
(32–35), while sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy are rarely mentioned.

7. Alcohol and smoking- Tobacco and alcohol products are advertised directly on web
series . Youth watches and trying to act like the hero does on series. Youth trying to adopt
that Macho man life style.

Every Indian human being needs 3 basic needs in life “Roti,Kapada aur Makaan.” But now a
days one more thing added in this and that is “Roti ,Kapada,Makaan aur Internet(web series).

OBJECTIVES
1. To find out the Psychological Effects of Web series Shows in Youth.
2. To find out the Effects of Web series shows on Perception of Youth regarding social
world.
3. To find out positive and negative effects of Web series shows.
4. To explore the Perception of Youth regarding Nature of Web series Show.

Hypothesis
H1. Internet Web series shows are Affecting the Psychology of Youth.
H2. Internet Web series Shows Changing the Perception of Youth regarding Social World.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
We select the adults of the age group of 18 to 30 yrs who‟s watching web series on the
internet of Kolhapur city for the survey and to fill the questionnaire.

Population
Researchers selected Young Adults (male & female) of Kolhapur city for the survey.
Sample
The target population of this study is young adults whose watching web series on the
internet of Kolhapur city instead of entire district.
Sample size
With the help of convenient random sampling technique researchers took 100
young adults, both male and female as the sample size.
Data Collection Tool
For the purpose of data collection researcher used questionnaire as a tool.
Results
Distribution of Respondents as per Gender-
Fig 1 shows the gender of respondents. Majority of the respondents (60 percent) were Male
and remaining (40 percent ) were females.

Fig 2 shows the ages of respondents. Majority of the respondents (45 percent) were from in
age group of 18-22yrs 35 percent were 23-26yrs and remaining 20 percent were from age
group of 27-30 years.

Fig 3 shows the profession of respondents. Since the target audience was youth most(70%)
of them were students & the remaining (30%) working professional.

Fig 5 shows the most attractive element about web series. Majority of the respondents (70
percent) watch web series for Funny & bad words dialogues ,bad jokes, violence ,intimate
scenes,20 percent respondents like to watch the lavish lifestyles shows in web series and
remaining 5 percent for the cast and 5 percent are for other reasons.

Fig 7 shows Smoking ,Alcohol drinking, intimate scenes showing on web series the
responders are attracted towards these things.55percent are strongly agree,35 percent are
agree ,10 percent disagree and 5 percent are neutral.

Fig 8 shows the respondents‟ feelings regarding web series shows and insecurity
in real life. 30 percent strongly agreed that web series are creating insecurity
among them towards real life. Majority of respondents (55 percent) agreed.
There were 5 percent respondents who express neutral response to question. 15
percent disagreed with this.

Fig 9 shows the respondents‟ perception regarding web series Shows Violence, aggression in
youth. Majority of respondents (73 percent) agreed that web series Shows Violence,
aggression in youth. while 27 percent strong agreed with it.

DISCUSSION-
This research study was conducted to know effects of web series shows on youth for this
study to complete researcher distributed a questionnaire among 100 respondents, responses of
these respondents were then analyzed according to their frequencies. In response of question,
in which age group do you follow? Mostly the youth participants for our survey fall in age
group 18 to 22, then age group 23 to 26, then onward 27 to 30. Study analysis that web series
shows affecting mentally as well as physically on the youth. Youth watches web series shows
more than 4 hrs daily. Result is that web series shows is more favorite and popular in youth.
In Response to question In a Day how much time do you spend watching web series on the
internet? Majority of the respondents (50 percent) watch web series shows 3-6 hours
daily,40percent watches 1-2 hrs & remaining 10percent watch 7-10 hrs daily. In Response to
question What is the most attractive element about your favorite web series?. Majority of the
respondents (70 percent) watch web series for Funny & bad words dialogues ,bad jokes,
violence ,intimate scenes,20 percent respondents like to watch the lavish lifestyles shows in
web series and remaining 5 percent for the cast and 5 percent are for other reasons.

are strongly agree,35 percent are agree ,10 percent disagree and 5 percent are neutral. In
Response to question Web series shows are creating insecurity in you in real life? 30 percent
strongly agreed that web series are creating insecurity among them towards real life. Majority
of respondents (55 percent) agreed. There were 5 percent respondents who express neutral
response to question. 15 percent disagreed with this. . In Response to question Do you think
that due to web series Shows Violence, Aggression is increasing among Youth? Majority of
respondents (73 percent) agreed that web series Shows Violence, aggression in youth. while
27 percent strong agreed with it. In Response to question after watching web series show do
you feel you are in criminal society? Majority of the respondents (50 percent) feel like they

CONCLUSION
The result of this study indicates that youth are highly influenced by the web series shows.
Because they pay more attention and time to web series shows instead of other activates.
While in current time this also crucial factor that family member(parents) gives less time to
young youth therefore they mostly watching web series shows. In house everybody have
different bedrooms with wi-fi connectivity so the youth is locked in rooms for hours n hours .
When grooming age youth would more focus the web series it mean they are learning a lot of
things from web series. In fact, the analysis shows that majority of youth psychological
affected through web series. Web series are not only changing their behavior toward
aggressive but also changing their language and language is most important part of any
culture. Smoking, Drinking habits are fast increasing in youth. More use of web series as
source of entertainment than the other physical activates. Obesity, depression, eyes disorders
are commonly seen in youths. Findings shows that youth perceive the content of the web
series shows is very against the ethics, culture and value of society. In last it is obvious
through study analysis that web series affecting mentally as well as physically on the
young youth.

SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Researcher suggest that the upcoming researcher who want to do research on this topic
should find out different aspects like how to resolve the negativity from these web series
shows and make them ethically good to make young youth and society secure. Further
research should have to do on deep concepts like web series shows content, how to reduce
violence from it, introduce a new committee like censorship board for web series shows.
