380V AC SWITCHGEAR TESTING

PROCEDURE
EMP-4149-Pr
1.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE

1.1 The procedures outlined in this procedure are intended to serve as guidelines for
electrical equipment’s preventive maintenance, disassembly, inspection and trouble
shooting.
1.2 The procedure also includes equipment illustrations and their respective part.

2.0 DEFINITIONS

2.1 WIP – Work Instruction Procedure

2.2 HSE – Health, Safety and Environmental

3.0 RESPONSIBLITIES

3.1 The _______________ shall be responsible for the safe and effective implementation of
this procedure.
3.2 The corresponding Maintenance Supervisor shall be responsible for the supervision and
compliance of maintenance personnel to perform this procedure.
3.3 The HSE Manager or his authorized representative shall be responsible to determine
compliance on Safety procedures and requirements.

4.0 RELATED DOCUMENTS/REFERENCES/ATTACHMENT

5.0 PROCEDURES/WORK INSTRUCTIONS

5.1 Ensure that a Permit to Work has been issued before performing testing on
380VAC Switchgear.

5.2 Test result shall be recorded on approved Test Sheet.

5.3 Perform zero voltage verification tests following approved written procedure.
Please refer to EMP-4102-Pr.

5.4 Perform visual inspection. The following items should be checked:

5.4.1 Inspect physical, electrical and mechanical condition including evidence of

moisture or corona.
5.4.2 Inspect proper operations of draw-out mechanism including mechanical
interlocks and position indicators.
5.4.3 Verify appropriate contact lubricant on moving current carrying parts.
5.4.4 Verify appropriate lubrication on moving and sliding surfaces.
5.4.5 Inspect ground connection to switchgear ground bus.

5.5 Thoroughly clean unit prior to testing. Use vacuum cleaner and dry lint free
cleaning rags.

5.6 Inspect switchgear bus bar connections for tightness by verifying that the torque
meets manufacturer’s specification. Refer to Table3, 4, 5 and 6.

5.7 Perform Electrical Test.

WARNING:
Dangerous voltage being induced during testing keeps a safe distance from the
apparatus under test.

5.7.1 Test insulation resistance of switchgear bus with a one minute (phase-to-
phase and phase-to-ground)

5.7.1.1 Disconnect all surge arrestors, distribution transformer and primary

fuses or PT from switchgear bus.
5.7.1.2 Apply test voltage in accordance with manufacturer’s published data.
In the absence of manufacturer’s published data, use Table 1.
5.7.1.3 Measured test values should be corrected to applicable temperature
correction factor. Please refer to Table 2.

5.7.2 Measure insulation resistance of current transformer with one (1) minute test.

5.7.2.1 Disconnect the secondary leads of the current transformer under

test.
5.7.2.2 Measure secondary-to-ground insulation
5.7.2.3 Test voltage and measured test values should be in accordance with
manufacturer’s published data in the absence of manufacturer’s
published data.
5.7.2.4 Measured test values should be corrected to applicable temperature
correction factor. Please refer to Table 2.
5.7.2.5 Measure current transformer winding resistance. The resistance
should be within + or - five (5) percent of the previously obtained
value.

5.7.3 Measure insulation resistance of potential transformer with one (1) minute
test.

5.7.3.1 Disconnect the primary terminal of the potential transformer under

test.
5.7.3.2 Measure the primary-to-ground, primary-to-secondary and
secondary-to-ground insulation.
5.7.3.3 Test voltage and measured test values should be in accordance to
manufacturer’s published data. In the absence of manufacturer’s
published data, use Table 1.
5.7.3.4 Measured test values should be corrected to applicable temperature
correction factor. Please refer to Table 2.
5.7.3.5 Apply rated voltage by secondary injection and verify the equivalent
reading from corresponding voltmeter and protection relay.
5.7.3.6 Measure the potential transformer winding resistance. The
resistance should be within + or – five (5) percent of the previously
obtained value.

5.7.4 Test operation of all space heaters including switching and indicating
devices.

5.7.4.1 Disconnect power source of space heaters.

5.7.4.2 Verify the correctness of its control wiring by continuity tests.
5.7.4.3 Using multi-tester measures the resistance of space heaters and
compares it to manufacturer’s data or previously obtained data.

5.7.5 After the performance of the testing cancel the Permit to Work.
