As summer brings the high temperatures and vacations are on the horizon I’m
preparing the July magazine with lots of other projects on my mind. As you may have
noticed I can’t work on just one thing at the time and I always need some variety to
keep me interested. Some of these activities can be seen in Blitzscales as they are the
products I design for my own accessories and models brand but others are intended
for other brands and magazines and others are simply not related with modelling.
That’s why it’s always welcome the aid of modellers friends like Łukasz Bąk that share
their models in the magazine pages.
This month we can see in Blitzscales the pictures taken at one of the most classic
modelling contests in Spain, the Torrent show had this year a new location that
everyone liked much.
The models shown this time includes a Panhard AML-60 from a Spanish cavalry unit
deployed in Valencia that ceased existing in 1985, the Marder III Ausf.H from Łukasz
Bąk and the ICM new kit from the Rheinmetall Leichttraktor, all of them 1/35 scale, and
finally the new 1/48 scale kit of the Spanish civil war Trubia-Naval.
I hope you like all this eclectic contents and enjoy reading while I start thinking in what
to show in the “post-summer” issue.

AMT

contest 2019

Once again modellers from everywhere gather at Torrent on the last April
weekend, a lovely and quiet town near Valencia in Spain. This year the
modelling contest location has changed from the Auditory facilities to the Las
arenas mall where the lower floor has been almost completely occupied by the
modelling exhibition and the many traders that have came from all over Spain
and Portugal.
The new location has been gladly welcome by modellers who found it far
roomier and protected from the weather.
The models exhibited this year shown very high quality and diverse topics
impressing both the novel and the experts. The lucky guys that could assist
could enjoy the many demonstrations that were programmed during all the
weekend; some of them conducted by prestigious modellers that were kind
enough to share their art “in action”.

The treaty of
Versailles restricted the
German military development after
the Great War but many programs
were conducted in secrecy during the following
years until the Third Reich was declared and thus all
external restrictions were simply ignored.
One of the secret projects that Germany developed was
the creation of an experimental tank (Vs.Kfz.31) known as the Leichttraktor.
This new tank had the engine placed at th front of the vehicle with the combat
station at the rear and a turret housing a 37mm Kwk 36 gun over it. Both
Rheinmetall and Krupp were asked to prepare their own prototypes, the
Krupp models had coil spring suspensions, while Rheinmetall had leaf spring
suspensions
In 1028 Rheinmetall was awarded with a 289 tanks order but it was soon
cancelled and in the end only four prototypes were produced by both
companies. These vehicles were used for training purposes until WWII.

The new kit from ICM is
everything you would expect from
them, easy building, nice detail and
fit and clear instructions to ensure
a pleasant modelling time. The only
weal point is the tracks made in two
soft vinyl parts each that are both
difficult to glue and paint. That’s why
I decided to design my own made

the sag on the upper part to fit the
return rollers. These tracks were
rubber made in the real vehicle and
included some metal plates on the
outer side that were simply bolted
to the rubber band to increase the
traction.
The kit was built following the
instructions and painted with
usual techniques to replicate a
well preserved vehicle used for
training purposes close to the WWII
beginning.

The Winter hunter
Marder III ausf H
Scale; 1/35
Producer; Dragon By Łukasz Bąk

During the World War II all the armies involved

in the conflict were trying to use all available resources
to create opportunities to reinforce their troops
including captured vehicles. The same story lies behind
all Marders based on PzKpfw. 38(t) which chassis
were taken after capturing Chechoslovakia by the
German forces. The Marder as self propelled artillery
was developed for eliminating mainly russian tanks
after Barbarossa operation was spreading out and
increasing numbers of soviet tanks started to worriyng
german staff officers. Despite poor protection of the
crew in combat, Marders were a quite reliable weapon
against enemy. I decided from the start, that my model
would be painted panzer grey color with whitewash
over it. This idea made me carefully study the archive
photos of winter camuflage Marders in East Front
during the war.
46
Building the model
As a base I took Dragon 6331 kit which
guaranteed good details, some PE elements
and metal barrel. Also having a magictrack
system in box gave me freedom of not buying
any extra aftermarket addons. What is more,
Dragon provided also some shell cases, ammo
boxes and ammunition for my build. That
is why I really like SmartKit’s. The model is
quite complex, even more than it looks at first
glance. First of all I decided to put together
the tracks and wheels, so I could paint them
later without any extra problems with fenders
etc. After assembly of the tracks I proceeded
with interior parts like the driver compartment.
This is where close study of instructions pay
off. After I realised that interior space under
the main gun is celling-free I prepared special
curved masks made with cartoon and Tamiya
tape to prevent any oversprays during the
panzer grey airbrushing. So first step was to
paint the interior with cremweiss color and
weathering the floor and walls a bit. After all
was set I procedeed to assemble all exterior
details as fenders, photo-etched elements,
tools and rear fighting compartment with very
delicate and well represented metal mesh
for spare shells which is quite typical in all
Marder versions. After that I moved to the gun
assembly and prepared armor superstructure.
This is another place where you need to be
carefull and after studying all options I decided
to not glue together the three parts of armor
plates covering the gun. The reason was I
wanted to paint it without danger I will not
reach the interior walls properly with all delicate
details on them to paint in a later stage. Having
all mentioned above done I put everything
together to check how it looked. Once
everything was OK it was time for painting
panzer grey.

47
Painting process
As I was planing whitewash I needed good
contrast. I love color modulation but this time
I needed to limit very bright tones to avoid
optical blending after white will come on. That
is why I used Tamiya paints – XF-63 German
Grey, mixed with XF-69 Nato black as a base.
For highlights I used extra few drops of XF-
18 Medium blue added to the mixture. At the
first moment it looked a bit too dark, but as I
mentioned before I intended to create a nice
contrast with white camuflage. The whole
model in panzergrey was covered with worn
effects from AK Interactive range. After it dried
I prepared the whitewash mixture. As a base
color I used XF-2 Flat White but with addition
of some XF-55 Deck tan to eliminate arificial
ideal white color and made it a bit dirtier and
more realistic. The important thing at this step
is addition of 30% water to the mixture which
helps to achieve better worn effects. Another
thing is to avoid spraying the edges of the
plates and surfaces which helps getting much
more realistic and worn look of the tank. After
applying the winter camuflage I very gently
scrubbed the painted surfaces. When the effect
was fine for me I added gloss varnish and
decals from Bison decals range with “Lausbub”
name as an option (it means noughty boy).
After applying satin varnish I passed to the
stage of painting the tracks and other smaller
details like tools etc.
Weathering
Using a bit of dirty whitewash (XF-2 + XF-55)
has another big advantage – You can make
some white dots with oil paints to create the
realistic variation of color. Also some dirty spots
with pigments is easy to achieve on such bright
surface. I used different tones of oil paints to
create mud, dirt and some streaking effects.
Also in order to create some dirty effect on rear
plate I mixed some pigments with white spirit
and sprayed it with the airbrush to get the dusty
look. With the little help of enamel products I
created oil stains and rut streaks. The exhaust
was painted with lifecolor paints and some
rusty tone pigments. The last touch was adding
some melting snow using the Citadel product.
The winter Marder was done and looked
exactly in the way I wanted it to look. This was
a pure fun and the kit provides all you need to
make a realy nice representation of this tank-
destroyer.

AML-60
In the Spanish army

Producer; Takom
Details; FCModeltips
Decals; FCMOdeltips

The Panhard AML is a light reconnaissance

vehicle developed in France in the 50s that have been
in service until the XXI century in many countries. The armoured
4x4 wheeled chassis is often provided in two configurations with the turret
housing a 90mm gun or a 60mm mortar sided by two MAS AA-52 NF-1 machine
guns.
The AML has proved its value in many conflicts in the last decades where they have provided
both reconnaissance and support roles.
In Spain the AML 90 and 60 have equipped the cavalry regiments for decades until replaced by
new generation vehicles like the Centauro. The AML-60 was the first version of the vehicle, with a
crew of 3 men; commander gunner and driver and its characteristic breech loaded mortar that could
be fired from the interior of the vehicle.

Takom released both kits of the AML-90

and AML-60 at the4 same time a
couple of years ago, as soon as
I had a sample I designed
the decals to represent
the Spanish vehicles and
also a couple of 3d printed
parts to use instead of the
kit ones. Having large supply
of both accessories I decided
to finally build this kit to depict
one of the vehicles used by
the GLC DOT III (Grupo ligero
de caballería, defensa operativa del
territorio III) stationed in Valencia between
1959 and 1985.
Building the kit was straightforward following
the instructions and the painting was done
using techniques that any average modeller can
control.
56
The kit is typical easy modelling with not too
many parts that show good detail although
some of them have been simplified for
an easier building. The front fender
cage for the tarpaulin has it moulded
together as a single piece making
it look too simple and same
happens with the jerrycan
and its basket. These parts
look far better when empty
so I designed them to be 3d
printed using the information
and photographs found at the
internet.
The 3d printed parts are made
with a special resin that cures with
the aid of ultraviolet light and then it can
be painted as any normal plastic part. One of its best
advantages is that it can be easily adapted to shape if
heated for a few seconds in the microwave oven.

The Trubia tank was produced in 1936 by request of the

Spanish republican army during the civil war. The tank used
the chassis of the Landesa tractor as a base and it was
produced at the fábrica de armas de Oviedo at the beginning and later at the Sociedad
española de construcción naval in Sestao (Bilbao) differing in little details.
With a crew of four men cramped in a very little space, the Trubia tank was a deficient
vehicle, weak and mechanically not reliable. The armament consisted in two Lewis 7,7mm
or DT 7,62mm machine guns depending on availability.
The first tanks were ready at the beginning of 1937 and were used in some battles at the
north where its technical and mechanical limitations became obvious. The Trubia-Naval
tanks that were captured by the national forces were used for artillery towing or engineering
labours as they had enough tanks that were far superior.

I wanted to have my own. Although I made
many AFV in scratch when I was young I

I didn’t have information enough to do it
correctly.
Some months ago when I begun designing
accessories for 3d printing I realized that
I could easily prepare a Trubia-Naval that
