INTRODUCTION
The environment is a beneficial aspect for all of the living beings. Additionally, it
correlates that human beings are given the opportunity to make use of the bountiful elements
presented by nature. The physical body, itself, is able to sustain through the resources that are
harvested and utilized for it to function (What are the consequences of the overexploitation of
natural resources?, n.d.). In exchange, it is the utmost responsibility of human beings as
stewards of the planet to protect and preserve it not just for them, but for the future
generation who will also depend on it.
However, humans may lack the discipline and practice in protecting and preserving the
environment. In today’s technological age, there are destructions, killings, and misuse of the
resources which substantially affects it to the point of depletion (Nazaruk, 2016). The evidence
of some aftermaths concerning environment destruction are still present up to this day. One
environmental exploitation during World War II was when an artificial fog scattered in Norway.
According to Pruitt (2018), this affected the growth rings of trees within the area. An animal
also became extinct because of climate change as mentioned by Rosane (2019). The animal was
the Bramble Cay Melomys. The environment is now at a complete disadvantage. With its
continuous destruction, the consequences of human deeds are increasing at a rapid rate.
If humans will not respond and raise awareness regarding this issue, this may cause
catastrophic destruction to our planet. This may cause extinction for some animals as well as a
possible downfall to human population because the environment living things depends on so
much lost its benefits. The future generation may also suffer succumbing to the consequences
they do not even deserve in the first place. The environment will lose benefits and humans will
most likely regret this childish mistake.
Humans are therefore being called for their utmost cooperation and discipline. There is
an urgent need for a plan of environmental action because the one who receives the greater
impact of the environmental consequences are the people in the lower class of society (Baland,
Bardhan, & Bowles, 2018). With these, there is in need to conserve water because of its
benefits to all living things and all living things being dependent on it (Evans, 2018). The
ecosystems, especially the marine ecosystem, shall also be preserved because all living things
are interconnected with each other through the ecosystems. There are already factors like
global warming that can further destroy the ecosystems which is why this issue is much more

challenging and urgent to take given the Earth’s current state (The Destruction of the Marine
System, 2017).
Henceforth, to alleviate the relevance of this problem in the modern age, as part of the
youth, an advocacy to call for the preservation of the environment will be conducted. This
advocacy foretells the responsibility of human beings towards the environment as intellectual
beings. It aims to uphold the duty to protect the wildlife, nurture the trees and forests, clean
the depths of the oceans and other bodies of water, to clean the atmosphere of the planet, to
organize proper waste disposal, and more just to preserve the environment and the beauty it
has (Shannon, 2018). As a group, the advocacy shall be taken with absolute perseverance and
passion to spread the message that it is trying to convey to the fellow citizens of the Earth.
BACKGROUND OF THE SOCIAL ISSUE
In the 18th century, industry revolution began to rise as different forms of technological
development came into the scene. It is the start of the age of prosperity for humanity.
Correspondingly, the efficiency of production made the work easier for people. Numerous
industrial corporations were established all over the world, but most especially in Europe and
America. However, the advancement of mankind came with a hefty price.
As innovation began to expand, the anthropocentric nature of mankind became much

evident than it was before. Gabrielli (2015) stated that the dawn of Anthropocene era marked a
new yet terrifying change in Earth’s history; humanity has begun an era of powerful impacts
against the environment and it was not a beneficial one but instead, a detrimental impact.
However, Gabrielli (2015) argued that there has been a discovery that proved the beginning of
environmental destruction; 240 years before the Anthropocene era, the ice core of Quelccaya
Ice Cap in Peru has demonstrated signs of anthropogenic pollution (pollution induced by
humans).
The detrimental effects that humans caused was not explicitly addressed until the 1940s
(Ganzel, 2007). The concerns regarding the preservation of environment had begun spreading
throughout the world as consequences evidently increased throughout the years. According to
Ganzel (2007), several organizations such as the National Wildlife Federation in USA, were
established, all of which streamlined the preservation, protection, and management of
environmental aspects including wildlife and water preservation.

With the rise of the industrial age also came at the expense of our health and
environment. Many of the machines used in those times uses fossil fuel as an energy source.
But, fossil fuel gives off byproducts like smog and soot, and those cause environmental
problems such as acid rain and air pollution. In turn, we are also harmed by our creations
indirectly.
Today, one of the major causes of air pollution is vehicle emmission, aside from factory
byproducts. These emmissions can produce ozone, which is a toxic gas that can be formed from
them with the reaction of sunlight. These all greatly contaminate our air (Water & Air Pollution,
2018). Although our air is still considered dirty, the policies and action done by our government
to improve air quality in the Philippines reduced the amount of particles in the air that we
breathe, thus bringing down the amount of air-related diseases incidents such as bronchitis (Air
Quality, n.d.)
Aside from that, our waters and its environment is also in danger. Sewage has long been
contaminating our waters, which now borne various diseases and parasites. Not only do our
industrial factories produce air pollutants, but they also emit waste products that are dumped
into bodies of water, which are left untreated (Water & Air Pollution, 2018). In the Philippines,
most of our water pollution stems from industrial, agricultural, and domestic waste and even
from chemical and oil spills. The Manila Third Sewerage Project has made effort into solving our
water pollution problem and so far, the project was able to make comminities rise up to clean
river banks and clean our waters and sewage waters were treated for fertilizer use (Water
Pollution, 2016).
OBJECTIVES OF THE CAMPAIGN
The advocacy campaign specifically aims to:
1. spread awareness about environmental preservation with the use of social media.
2. encourage people to join and participate in social organizations that advocates for
environment preservation
3. make an action about environmental problems that needs attention from the people.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CAMPAIGN
The advocacy the group chose to campaign for is environmental preservation. As stated
previously, environmental preservation is the act of preserving or keeping the natural world in
its original state, like in nature parks or preservation areas. Instead of using up natural
resources in a certain area, the land should be kept completely natural with little to no impact
from humans.
At first glance, environmental preservation might not seem important, especially in this
modern age. Still, when one looks at the grand scheme of things, it is then clear that the issue
of environmental preservation is actually important and significant enough to pay attention to.
Firstly, if mankind continues to destroy the environment instead of preserving it, wild
animals will lose their habitats. As they lose their habitats, they become more prone to several
dangers. Predators can hunt them more easily, and food and water may become difficult to
find. Additionally, they can be more exposed to the elements, like rain and snow, and thus
become more predisposed to illness. Environmental preservation then ensures that all animals,
especially endangered ones, will always have natural habitats available for them, allowing them
to avoid the aforementioned dangers and difficulties.
Secondly, a lack of environmental preservation can lead to the continual degradation of

the environment. This constant environmental deterioration can cause a host of other
problems for society and mankind. Air, water, and land quality can worsen and affect human
health. More diseases related to the quality of the environment can crop up, and the number of
people affected by them can increase. Aside from that, biodiversity can be affected. Plant and
animal species can have difficulty surviving, which then leads to a rise in endangered and
extinct species.
Those are only a few examples of the problems humanity faces if the environment is not
preserved. Environmental preservation is then very important because if mankind does not
preserve the environment, these dilemmas may cause loss of resources, time, and even lives.

ICT ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN
In the technological age, ICT tools have helped shape how communication works today.
It has become more convenient and accessible to almost every one worldwide. Hence, a single
matter can spread within a few hours reaching thousands of people online; conveying its
message through the media it utilized.
In line with this, to achieve the goals of the advocacy campaign, an infomercial shall be
designed and created to educate the viewers of the topic of the campaign. The infomercial will
be formulated through the use of animation software, specifically PowToon, Vyond, or Prezi.
These online applications are designed to aid its users in the creation of informative videos
through different styles and presets of animation available in its system. This process would
result to the desired video (infomercial) of the campaign.
After the animating process, the video shall be uploaded on different social media
platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and other known sites through the help of
Internet. This step will enable the campaign to engage a larger audience as all of the
aforementioned social media platforms have millions of users all over the world. These ICT
tools discussed above are the focal aspects into having the educational output for the
campaign.
Success Rate
The likeliness of succeeding in this campaign is relatively high as it is a relevant issue in today’s
society. Furthermore, since it is aided with ICT tools, it will be able to reach a wider variety of
audience, all of which are from different ages. If so, then the rate of success in raising the
awareness and knowledge of people about the subject matter will increase as more people are
educated. Additionally, it will encourage people to be more vocal and courageous on issues like
this. Hence, they, themselves, will act on their own will to put the message into action which is
preserving the environment and doing the duty of being the stewards of Earth.
Positive Effects to the Other Aspects of Society
1. Environment preservation gives the children an opportunity to learn more about the beauty
of nature in its raw state. Untouched and uninfluenced by detrimental human activities, it will
contribute to a more in-depth understanding and awareness of how humans should act

towards the environment. This could eventually lead to the discovery of new theories and facts
of life unbeknownst to the civilization. Hence, preserving the environment for the sake of
education is substantial matter.
2. With the correct and proper use of all the resources available in the environment, a boost in
the economy (business and livelihood) will most likely happen. This is because there is no
exploitation occurring; when there is no such thing, the environment will be able to recover the
resources it has provided to humans. Correspondingly, mankind must do something in return of
utilizing the environment; humans must always preserve, take care, or replenish what has been
used up for their gain. An example would be cutting down trees for building a barn, to make up
for this act; more trees should be planted to compensate the factors lost.
3. The overall health worldwide would not degrade any further for environment preservation
aims to sustain and manage every aspect of the nature and with this focal idea, it can combat
the growing pollution that affects the quality of life. Instilling environment preservation would
result to protecting the health of the current and future generations. It is important to leave a
mark behind for them to remember, but it should always be a mark worth reminiscing for.
4. Lastly, environment preservation will create an impact on the abundance of animal and plant
life which shall bring balance to life forms on Earth. As they are crucial proponents of sustaining
life, this movement will help alleviate the extinctions faced in the modern era. The processes
aligned with the sustenance of life will work together to maintain the progress needed by the
environment. An example to illustrate this would be the abundance of sharks, they help in
maintaining the coral reefs of the seas and oceans; without them, there would be catastrophic
effects because other small marine animals feed substantially on these organisms.
SELF – REFLECTION
In this section, the reflection of the members of the group is exhibited below to
illustrate and exemplify the awareness, understanding, and knowledge about the subject of the
campaign.
A. Aligui, Vince Christian
I care about our health and environment as much as I care about the communities
suffering from the consequences of our negligence towards our own environment. Millions of

people suffer from the destruction we have created upon our land and sea and even then, we
are quite oblivious to the changes happening in our planet. Due to our wants and demands, we
have created the monsters that are the bane of our natural environment’s existence. As
industries rise and commercial needs escalate, so does our effort to meet demands rise, and
with that comes the price we pay for industrial efficiency.
I believe that awareness must come first in order to make changes in our world and
through our advocacy, we can achieve mass awareness of the main problems of our
environment and teach everybody on how to make small steps towards making a big change in
society and our environment. Through this, we can remove the apathy that silently affects us
and make us less aware of the underlying problems that plague our mother Earth. As long as we
unite under a common problem, we can solve our environmental problems and save planet
Earth from the effects of global warming and climate change, to mention a few of the main
problems in our environment.
B. Cantos, Niña Anthea Zoraine
The preservation of the environment is one of the most problems of the humankind
because of the rapid increase in population. Since there is a higher amount of the human
population, then more resources are needed to supply for daily consumption. The big chunk of
our resources supplier is coming from the environment, but the problem is that humans are
consuming too much from it. Environmental preservation and conservation is a must to prevent
the degradation of the environment.
Environment preservation is something that we need to take in action. It is something

that needs the urgent attention of the people because the Earth is now on its worst condition.
Based on our researches, the most affected area that needs an action is our oceans. Since, the
usage of plastics goes to its extent, and take note that the plastics are non biodegradable. It will
stay in our oceans and lands and many factors are being affected because of plastic wastes,
especially the marine animals. Because people throw their trashes in the ocean instead of
recycling it or to reuse it.
Today, most of the people are researching on how to decrease the use of plastics by
inventing some alternatives like, using extracted seaweeds instead of producing more plastics
for packaging in manufactures. We are starting to take an action to preserve our environment.

And I hope someday that people will realize that we are not the owner of the Earth, we are just
the care takers. So we should serve the environment right, like how the environment cares for
us humans.
C. De Castro, Emmanuel Pol Aris
The environment indeed has numerous benefits for all living things. It starts from the
oxygen we breathe up to the water we consume to quench our thirst every single day. All living
things are interconnected. It is therefore the responsibility of us human beings to take care of it
and preserve it.
As part of the youth, I am alarmed by the issue because I know I myself have
unintentionally contributed to plastic pollution. I sometimes used plastics and plastic straws for
my own purposes, not knowing that these plastics can be dumped on the ocean and would
later kill marine life. I was more alarmed when I first saw on Facebook that some sperm whales
were spotted dead and upon discovery, it turned out that their stomachs were full of giant
plastic garbage, probably mistaking the garbage for a turtle. I realized that our very own actions
can actually lead to issues concerning the environment. Another scenario is when we have
killed wildlife just to take advantage for our clothing and personal gain. A common example is
when tigers are being hunted to make use of their fur for clothing. I realized that with all of
these happening around the planet, it seems as though it is already hopeless. There are
destructions and misuses of the environment. However, I am certain that it is not the end of the
line for human beings yet.
As part of the youth, I now know that I have a responsibility for preserving the
environment. The future generation will also depend on it so quick actions will be necessary
upon having advocacy. Organizing a group whose members have the same goal will make the
goal much easier to attain. Though it is not expected to receive a high considerable amount of
manpower, I know it is best to start small that gradually gets bigger as time comes. I also
realized that in today’s modern technological age, it is best to make use of ICT tools and
software to share the advocacy or goal of the unified group. This would be very practical since
households have televisions and radios to listen for any advocacy, and since the youth
nowadays are so much dependent on phone, containing application software like Facebook and
Twitter that can be used to know the advocacy on a short period of time.

ICT tools are very useful nowadays. I learned that it makes advocating much easier and
faster. Thus, saving time. Even though I am not an expert in managing ICT tools, I learned I have
the responsibility to be knowledgeable about it. Lastly, I definitely learned that the
environment should be preserved now because the planet needs our discipline and proper
conduct. I learned that we shall take care of our trees, wildlife, and oceans because we highly
depend on it. We shall practice proper waste disposal for us to prevent pollution of any kind.
We shall stop our bad habits like smoking, discharging of chemicals in factories, illegal mining
and logging because this can greatly worsen the current situation of our planet. We are born as
stewards of this planet and therefore, we should act like one. Discipline is what all we need to
establish. Let us have good manners for our environment.

In today’s society, there is no doubt that the state of the environment is continuously
depleting at an alarming rate. Numerous species of animals have gone extinct, water resources
face crisis from pollution, thousands of trees and plants are destroyed every day in every part
of the world. It is clearly evident that Mother Earth is suffering from the damages made by
humankind. Henceforth, environment preservation is undoubtedly a significant contribution
with its forefront of maintaining, managing, as well as protecting every aspect bounded within
it.
Inevitably, the consequences of humans excessively taking advantage of the environment

for their own gain are continuously expanding to unimaginable lengths. Therefore, it is time for
every individual to extend their hearts and minds into addressing and contending this recurring
problem. It is truly saddening how humans are supposed to be the stewards of nature but are
actually the ones destroying it.
Animals are dying. They are dying, not just because of natural selection but because of the
anthropocentricity of humans. This means that humans centered themselves, neglecting the
significance of the environment and the beings within it. A situation to exemplify this would be
the dead whale in Compostella Valley which was found with 40 kilograms of plastic in its
stomach last 16th of March, 2019. It displays how insufficient are the efforts in taking care of
the environment, how apathetic humans are, and how most lack knowledge on what they
should do.

Nonetheless, despite the one-sided view and deficiency in awareness and understanding of
humans, there can always be something done to alleviate the mistakes and lessen its harmful
effects. As different environmental movements rise in the modern era, the utilization of
technology through the social media platform has enabled the spread of the advocacy and
message much faster and easier to a larger audience across the world. Through this process,
more and more people are becoming aware of the issue faced by Earth.
Aside from informing them of what is happening, it encourages people to do what is right
and just not just for their benefit but for the whole environment. If they truly know how crucial
sustaining the environment is for the welfare of every being on the planet, then they will take
the matter in their own hands. If they learn how detrimental acts of humans can affect every
aspect of life, then environment preservation will move forward. I strongly believe that we
must put an end to environment’s suffering with our own hands. After all, it is our duty as
intellectual beings to protect and treat all as equal.

No matter how hard we try, there is still so much to be done to save our planet. What our
environment really needs is the change of the attitude of people towards the little and subtle
things that secretly affect our environment in such huge ways. Even if we clean up our ocean,
stop harmful factories, and cleanse our air, if people are not willing to change their attitude
towards their surroundings, we are ever perpetually trapped in a vicious cycle of cleaning up
after ourselves. Except, we are making more mess than we can clean. If we do not act now, we
might end up making a big mess out of our home and our fellow neighbors. It may not be
obvious, but we live in the same planet Earth, no matter how big the place might seem. In here,
our actions have consequences on our environment and, by extension, ourselves and on the
things we care about. We must act now and change ourselves before it is too late, and for me,
this advocacy will help in reaching out to those who care and who have yet to care for the same
home that we live in: Earth.
