Intention

What do I want students to get out of

their college experience? What will
this experience do for them in the
future? What kinds of experiences
will help them to achieve what they
want in their future?

Pivot Points
Pivot Points
There are experiences in each of our lives that alter or shape what we do or how we live.
These are pivot points. Pivot points, when put on a timeline, show your development and
create your personal brand. Essentially, they tell you and others who you are and where
you've been before you got to where you are. Help students to outline their pivot points
with this graphic or a method of your own choosing.

What do they already know?
Make a list of the skills, competencies, strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and network
that they already have.

These are essential in learning where they are at and where you need and want them to go.

How do you help them to narrate their story?

Students need to be able to craft and then share their story. You have a unique
opportunity to talk to them about their life and pivot points and give them direction as to
how to do so.

Here is an example to help you get started:

I came to college planning on majoring in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy. I
left on my mission to Cambodia and discovered how much I enjoyed International
Development. I am now majoring in Asian Studies with minors in International
Development. I interned last summer with Help International where I discovered my love
for nonprofits which led me to add a minor in NonProfit Management.

Determining an
Experience
Ask students the following questions or help them to answer
them. They are meant to help them find experiences.

R esult: What is your desired outcome? What competency, skill, or

other ability do you want to develop?

A Student's Potential Opportunities
You are both knowledgeable about and have a network for experiences that
would be beneficial to students. These lists are not exhaustive, nor extremely
specific. Use them in combination with your knowledge to help students to
narrow down choices of opportunities.
