Stress and its relationship to Anxiety- ask students as a class- select volunteers

Teacher- we are going to learn some new vocabulary related to Anxiety next, you can
go onto Quizlet to practice for homework this week
Teacher – let’s listen to the short audio clip on Anxiety and listen for some of the new
vocabulary words
Listen 1st for main ideas, give students handout, Listen again for details
- examples in the classroom- ask students for examples ie: times when
they may feel anxiety/anxiousness (write on board) 5 min
- ie: speaking/presentations, and test anxiety, being called on to answer
a question/ to give an answer, making mistakes in front of others
(write on board)
Have class organize into groups and brainstorm for 6 tips before they watch the video 5 min
Instructions for class are to write down something about each tip and to think about
the pairs activity after the video

After viewing the video, have the class form pairs and discuss which of the 6 tips they 10 min
would find most helpful and would be willing to try and why. Have volunteers from the
pairs tell the class about 1 tip they would try.
Teacher- Summary- we have learned quite a bit about Anxiety today and we just 10 min
watched a video on how to deal with Speaking in the Classroom, so now we are going
to do some exercises similar to the Guided Meditation that will help deal with other
types of Anxiety. (Starts to hand out the exercises to the class) There are Deep-
Breathing, Muscle Relaxation, Challenging thoughts, and use of Imagery.

exercises, progressive muscle tension/relaxation, irrational thoughts, and guided
imagery

manage anxiety at home.

Coping with Anxiety
Everyone feels anxiety at times- but there are things you can do to minimize anxiety and
manage anxiety.
1. Healthy Living:
Exercise on a regular basis (try for 30 min/day about 3-4 days per week to start)
Eat well balanced meals, 3 times per day
Get enough sleep and set up a regular sleep routine- adults need 8-9 hours of
sleep per night
Avoid illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco and excess caffeine
2. Healthy Thinking:
Don’t worry about things you can’t control- ex. Weather
Look at change as a positive challenge
Positive thoughts and positive self-talk
Set realistic goals
Meditate
3. Healthy Actions:
Prepare well in advance for events that may be stressful- ex. Test/Project
Ask for help from friends, family, and teachers
Take breaks for daily stress with time with friends, fun activities and/or group sports
Work to resolve conflicts without anger and losing temper
Solve problems one at a time- take one task at a time
Avoid overscheduling- prioritize activities
