Chapter # 2

Answer 1

Process of planning and cooking a family dinner:

 Planning
We plan what we have to cook. This is done by taking inputs from all family members and in this
stage we find the mission statement that is what is going to be the end product or what dish will
be cooked.

 Concept Development
In this step we ponder over various methods to cook the desired dish and find out the one recipe
which we will be using to make the dish.

 System Level Design

In this step we define the product architecture and in this case we find out what are the vegetables
and other spices required to cook the dish.

 Detail Design
In this step we give the complete specification of the material. In this case we decide the method
we will use to cook the dish ie. the step by step decision of how and in what order we put the
spices and vegetables in order to cook the dish.

 Testing and Refinement

In this step we compare our product to reproduced versions of the same kind. In this case we
compare our dish to previously made dishes of the same kind. If required we then make the
necessary changes in order to make the dish perfect.

 Production Ramp- up:

In this phase the product is made using the intended production system. In this case once we have
found out the process and materials we use. Then we start cooking and making desired dish.

Cooking is analogues to process intensive schema. This is because cooking a dish moreover
depends on the cooking process which is process intensive. If we see the description of process
intensive products, we
Come to know that the characteristics of the product are highly constrained by the production
process.

Answer # 2
Process of finding a job

 Planning
In this phase we generally plan how to get a job? This means that we plan out the way in which
we will apply the position for which we will apply etc.
 Concept Development
In this phase we figure out different ways in which we will apply for the jobs and conclude one
single way by which we will do the application.

 System Level Design

Here we define the product architecture and in this case we find out the things necessary for a
good job for eg. A good resume, Job title matching our profile, companies to apply in , Job sites
to post our resume on.

 Detail Design
This step gives complete specification of geometry of materials. In this case we specify the
various components in order of their importance and step by step process. For eg:
We first create a good resume, then find the companies having job position open which are
matching our profile, then apply.

 Testing and refinement

In this step we compare our product to reproduced versions of the same kind. In this case we
compare our resume to sample of resumes on web and also we find out from reviews and
references if the website on which we are posting our resume or the company we are applying are
worth or not. If any changes required in resume we do it .

 Production Ramp- up
In this step the product is made using the intended production system. In this case once we have
figured out the perfect resume and companies to apply job in. We go ahead and start applying
jobs aggressively.

Well defined process enhances performance of process intensive products such as Snack foods, breakfast
cereals, chemicals, Semiconductors etc. This is mainly because production of the above endeavors mainly
depends on their process of production.
