I. Introduction

1.1 Project Context

For most academic institutions, the entrance exam is given manually by pen and paper.
According to Ainscough, T. L. (1996). "The Internet for the rest of us: marketing on the
World Wide Web.", traditional methods of giving the examination are time-consuming
because it is manually checked and evaluated. Issues of pen and paper examination include
loss of test result data, result manipulations or inaccurate results, delayed in the results
release, high cost of examination materials and other logistics. Commented [PMN2]: indention

Unlike the traditional method, the web-based entrance examination can also reduce not
only the time of checking and evaluation but will also reduce the use of papers to provide
entrance examinations. The system would be beneficial both to the examinees and the test
administrators. For examinees, the waiting period for the result of the examination will be
reduced and they will immediately be given an overview of the different courses suitable
based on the results of the examination. For test administrators, the volume of the workload
from checking and evaluation of examination results will be replaced by the system.

The researcher’s task is to develop a web-based entrance examination that will replace pen
and paper methods of taking and giving entrance examination by providing generated
results right after taking the examination and automatically give examinees the list of
course recommendations based on the result percentage of the exam which will make it
easier for the administrators to assess and give a briefing for the examinee about the courses
that are most suitable for them.

1.2 Purpose and description

The purpose of this project is to mainly provide academic institutions with a web-based
entrance examination with course recommendations to improve and replace the traditional
method of giving the entrance examination.

The project is intended to prevent, minimize and improve the evaluation of entrance
examinations. This project also intends to give examinees an overview of the list of courses
where they are suitable after taking the examination. With manual work processes,
Administrators can only accommodate limited numbers of examinees a day and it will take
a period to finish checking and evaluating the papers.

The web-based entrance examination will provide immediate results of the examination
and will generate reports to be used as a tool for marketing plan and/or decision making of
the academic institution and has a data bank of created questions and this makes it a simpler
method to give test administrators to include the test rules and give a test in a completely
organized system. Commented [PMN3]: indention

1.3 Objectives

General Objectives of the study:

To develop a web-based application that can automatically create an entrance examination

that is made up of multiple-choice questionnaires, produce reports and recommend the
most suitable course to be taken by the examinee during enrolment.

Specific Objective of the study:

- To create a data bank of created test questions from administrator.

- To view the test scores immediately after taking the examination.

- To view the lists of recommended courses based on the test score percentage.

- To generate a report that can be used as an aid for marketing plan and/or decision

making. Commented [PMN4]: use number not dashed; example:

1.To create a data bank of created test questions from
administrator
1.4 Scopes and limitations
- The proposed system will allow the test administrator to view, update, store and add
entrance examination test questions.
- The proposed system will allow test administrators to generate reports and provide
printed course recommendations from the entrance examination.

- The proposed system is limited to the test administrator who can give entrance
examination and to the examinees; Only authorized personnel can access the system.

- The proposed system is specifically designed for academic institutions.

- The proposed system will generate the results of the examination and will not be
posted or share publicly to observe data privacy policy.

- The test administrator will be the one to brief the examinees for the courses that they
are most suitable with; The system will only show the recommended courses based on
Commented [PMN5]: Remove the dashed and construct
the test result percentage. your scope and limitation is in a form of a paragraph

1.5 Significance of the study
This study is beneficial for the various group of people:

Examinees. This study will benefit the examinee knowing that the result of the
examination is immediately generated after taking it. Also, examinees will be
provided with a list of course recommendations based on the examination result.

Administrator. This study will benefit the department knowing that the results and
course recommendation are efficiently provided to examinees right after the
examination. The system will also allow the administrator to back up and secure
the record of the examinee and the examination, therefore, they can prevent the loss
of examinee’s result and information.

The Future Researchers. The study will be beneficial in a way that this can serve
as their guide for web-based entrance examination systems and other similar
research that they will be encountering.
