Workflow to optimize well design using

specific inclination angle and entry point

into the reservoir

Schlumberger - Public
Petrel 2009
Create a well with technical drilling limitations:
• Defined reservoir entry point
• Defined inclination angle at reservoir entry point
• Defined DSL and kick off point

Schlumberger - Public
Use Well optimizer process to choose the well
Solution
1. Create the reservoir entry points using Make Edit Polygon Process
2. Create a plane surface using Make Edit Surface Process
3. Create the platform (well head) and create a well sub-folder
4. Run the well optimizer process to create the optimized well using the
entry points as target, the platform and defining the kick off value and
DSL parameters

5. In the workflow editor:
1. Define the inclination angles to be used in the Make Edit
Surface Process as a list of values
2. Assign the Z values of the target points to the plane surface
3. Run the workflow
1. Create the reservoir entry points

• Active Make Edit Polygon Process

• Click on Create / Edit Point icon
• Click on start new set of points
(Deactivate old ones)

Schlumberger - Public
• Click the position where the well must
cross the reservoir horizon or surface
• Draw two more points close to the entry
point.
• The point set is stored in the Input Pane
• Change the name to Target Points
2. Create a planar surface using entry point XYZ

• Open Make Edit Surface

and define a geometry (get
from horizon or surface)
• Use Artificial algorithm

Schlumberger - Public
(Plane), define the XYZ of
the entry point, well
azimuth and dip angle. The
dip angle is defined as: 90 –
inclination angle. In this
case the desired inclination
azimuth is 83, so the used
dip is 7. Click on Ok
3. Create the platform (well head) and a well
subfolder
• Right click on Wells folder and
select the option “Insert a new
Well”
• A dialog box pops up, then define

Schlumberger - Public
the XY position of the optimized
wells
• Right click on Wells folder and
select the option “Insert well sub
folder” and called “Opt wells
workflow”
4. Run the Well Optimizer process

• Open the Well design process

and go to well optimizer tab
• In Target tab, drop the target
points in the Input Targets

column
• Drop in the platform well in the
Platforms column
• Define the Kick off depth and
set the slot to one
• In the Cost model tab, define
the cost model and click on Run
5. In the workflow Editor define dip angles and
target points
• In $DIP variable, define the list of angles to be used
• Assign the Z value of Target points to the plane surface
• Drop the Opt Well Workflow subfolder in the “Folder to copy it into blank”
• Run the workflow
