Secondary Data Collection
Secondary data needed for the study have been collected from Dhaka City Corporation, ‘The
Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP), Fire Service and Civil Defence and
other relevant sources. Physical copies of maps and demographic data of Ward 67 and 68 were
collected from Dhaka City Corporation, GIS maps of both wardswere collected from CDMP.
Data of previous fire incidents (e. Nimtali fire and other incidents) and a list of chemical
warehouses in the study area were collected from the Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate.
Primary Data Collection
Field Surv
Primary data has been collected through ficld survey. The first step in data collection is a
reconnaissance survey of the study area to know the location of chemical warehouses and general
characteristics of the area. Necessary data according to the risk index has been collected through,
‘questionnaire survey and check-list from the study area.
Semi-structured interviews owners and dwellers to assess their knowledge and mitigation
preparedness for fire hazards
KIL (Key Informant Interview). We discussed with 2 vietims and 1 expert from Bangladesh Fire
Service and Civil Defense.
Observations. We observe several places and talked with victim people in Churihatta area
Background of Field Visit
‘There was a time when thousands to millions died from natural disasters. Just 100
years ago, widespread contamination of cholera and chicken pox would wipe out the population
ofan entire metropolis. During the 1990s, people died from cyclones or tsunamis. But an increase
