A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics IV

I. Objectives :
At the end of the lesson the pupils should be able to:
 apply the formula in finding the volume of rectangular prism with standard
units;
 write solution in finding volumes of rectangular prisms correctly and;
 show cooperation and unity in the group activity

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Finding the Volume of Rectangular Prism
References: K to 12 Grade 4 Curriculum Guide, LM Math Grade 4 pages
229 to 232
Materials: different sizes of rectangular prism, flashcards, pingpong balls
and ruler
Values Integration: Cooperation and Unity

III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’ Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1.Prayer
(The teacher will call a pupil to lead
the prayer). (Pupils pray for the opening prayer.)

2. Greetings
Good morning class!
How are you today? Good morning !
We’re fine!
3. Checking of attendance

Ask:
Now group leaders, do we have
absentees today? (Group leaders report.)
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’ Activity
B. Preparatory Activities

1. Opening Song
Let’s sing our class theme song. Learning Math is really fun….
2. Drill
Let’s exercise our MIND, so be
attentive.
Mental computation using flashcards
5x3x2 6x2x3
2x6x2
8x5x1 4x7x1
3. Review

So children what have we discussed Teacher, yesterday our topic was The
yesterday? Volume of a Solid Figure using Non-
Standard Units.

That’s right.

I have here 2 examples of solid Teacher cylinder and prism.

figures, what do you call these figures?

Very good. Which do you think Pupils may vary answers

between these solid figures will contain
more marbles?

Good. What do you call now the Teacher, it is called VOLUME.

amount of space a solid figure
occupies?

4. Motivation
Class, What do you think is this? A piece of jigsaw puzzle.
(The teacher will show pieces of
puzzles)
That’s right! Have you ever played Yes Teacher.
a Jigsaw puzzle?

In order to form the puzzle. You are

going to answer my questions and if you (The pupils answer the question until
answer it correctly, you are going to the puzzle is formed.)
paste a piece of jigsaw puzzle on the
board.

(Call one by one until the puzzle is

formed.)

Okay, What is formed now in our A Rectangular Prism.

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation
Rhea has an empty cereal box. It has a
length of 15 cm, a width of 4 cm, and a
height of 10 cm. If she will store rice in
it, how many cubic centimeters of rice
will it contain?

What does Rhea have? An empty cereal box.

What is its length? Its length is 15 cm.

How about its width? Its width is 4 cm.

What about its height? 10 cm.

What is asked in the problem? The problem is how many cubic

centimeters of rice will an empty cereal
box contain.

Do you know how to solve the problem? No teacher.

And that is our topic for today. It is all

about finding the Volume of a
Rectangular Prism.

Show a short clip determining the

volume of the prism.

2. Discussion
After viewing, ask the following
questions to the pupils.

1. What is the video presentation It is about finding the volume of

all about? rectangular prism.

2. What are the three dimensions The three dimensions of rectangular

of rectangular prism? prism are the length, width and height

3. What formula can we use to The formula in finding the volume of

find the number of cubic units rectangular prism is V = l x w x h
or to find the volume of
rectangular prism?
4. Why is it 𝑐𝑚3 ? Teacher because we are multiplying
three dimensions.
That’s right. We have 1 unit for length, 1
unit for width and 1 unit for height.

Going back to the first problem, how One pupil will solve the problem.
many cubic centimeters of rice will an
empty box of cereal contain? Who
would like to solve in the board?

Before proceeding to our activity, let us Yes teacher.

answer another problem.

Berto found a rectangular box, its length

is 8 cm, its width is 5 cm, and its height
is 4 cm. What is the volume of the
rectangular box?

Who would like to answer this problem? One pupil will solve the problem.

3. Performing the Activities

Group Activity
Divide the class into three groups.
Distribute different sizes of rectangular
prism objects and ruler.

So class, I will be grouping you

into 3 groups. So what you will do is
that you’re going to measure the length,
width and height of the box that I will be
giving to you later and of course you
need to find its volume.

Remember that this is a group Yes teacher!

activity, and all of you should cooperate.
Is that clear?

Do you have any questions? None Teacher.

4. Processing the Activities

Let the pupils discuss how they found
the volume.

How did you find the activity? It’s very fun!

How does cooperation and unity Teacher because of cooperation and
take place in your group activity? unity, we made the task a lot easier.

(Instill the Value of Cooperation and

Unity)

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’ Activity

5. Fixing Skills

Find the volume of rectangular prism.

1.
(Pupil solve the volume of rectangular
prism on the board)

2.

3.

6. Generalization

What are the three dimensions of The length, width and height.
rectangular prism?

What is the formula in finding the The formula in finding the volume of
Volume of rectangular prism? rectangular prism is V = l x w x h
IV. Evaluation

Find the missing dimension.

1. V= 943 m3 2. L= 20 cm 3. V= 192 m3
W= 9 m W= 5 cm W= 4 m
L= 7 m H= 10 cm H= 6 m
H= ? V= ? L= ?

4. V= 14, 400 cm3 5. L= 9 ft.

L= 40 cm W= 3 ft.
H= 24 cm H= 5 ft.
W= ? V= ?

V. Assignment

Find the volume of the following.

Length Width Height Volume

1. 9 in. 7 in 5 in.
2. 40cm 15cm 20cm
3. 5 m 4 m 7m
