Word meanings

Prose- written language not intended as poetry.

- Prose can be written or spoken and has no formal metrical structure. It is basically

ordinary language - the way people speak. Prose is a form of language that has no formal metrical
structure. It applies a natural flow of speech, and ordinary grammatical structure rather than rhythmic
structure, such as in the case of traditional poetry. Normal every day speech is spoken in prose and most
people think and write in prose form. Prose comprises of full grammatical sentences which consist of

the most reflective of conversational speech. Some works of prose do have versification and a blend of
the two formats that is called prose poetry.

Usual in prose.

(The teacher provides a sample of Poem and Prose)

Example of a poetry verse

“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

But I have promises to keep.
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”

Example of Prose Form

“The woods look lovely against the setting darkness and as I gaze into the mysterious depths of the forest,

I feel like lingering here longer. However, I have pending appointments to keep and much distance to

cover before I settle in for the night or else I will be late for all of them.”

C. DEEPEN

Reading 1

“FIRST A POEM MUST BE MAGICAL”

Jose Garcia Villa

Jose Garcia Villa is considered by many as the foremost Filipino poet in English. His poems speak for his
belief that a poet’s whole function is to arouse pleasure in the beautiful and to stimulate emotion. For him,
“prose is the language of man; poetry is the language of angels.”

First, a poem must be magical,

Then musical as a sea-gull.

It must be a brightness moving

And hold a secret a bird’s flowering.

It must be slender as a bell,

And it must have the wisdom of bows.

And it must be able to hear

The luminance of dove and deer.

It must be able to hide

What it seeks, like a bride.

And over all I would like to hover.

God, smiling from the poem’s cover.

Activity 2 Word Smart

Match the words on the left with their meaning.

1. Luminance a. Having little width in proportion to the length or height

2. Musical b. Containing, constituting or characterized by pleasing melody
