MATERIAL : PAPER (Mount board)

OBSERVATIONS:
• It’s a soft material which can be cut easily with paper knife, it Bends and sticks easily with fevicol.
• It leaves a crease if bent too much .
• Requires a lot of support structures as the material is soft to add stability to the model.
• As paper absorbs moisture it can becomes soggy during humid weather.
• We cannot achieve finished model with mount board as compared to other materials hence can be used during
crude concept developments.

MATERIAL : ALUMINIUM (Metal)

OBSERVATIONS:
• Aluminium being metal is hard to cut and has a high elasticity which tends to retract to its original shape when bent.
• A common paper cutter can be used to cut Aluminium. As its hard we cant completely cut it so we have to break it
off.
• Aluminium is also brittle which means when we fold it again more than once at the same place it will break.
• We commonly use feviquick (super glue) to stick aluminium pieces to each other. But one must note that feviquick
can also can be peeled off of Aluminium under a certain pressure so we used to remove the elasticity/ tension in
the material before sticking it.
• Due to the springiness or Aluminium sheets, care must be taken to use a lot of support structures to hold the
aluminium pieces in place .
• One can make bend aluminium is various angles by using the ‘ half – cut ‘ technique. Note that bending it more
than once can break the sheet at the point.
• It is pretty difficult to make intricate details using Aluminium sheets since it needs to broken off after cutting.
• One must always remember to sand the edges after breaking off a piece of Aluminium since it can easily cuts one’s
skin.

MATERIAL : STYRENE SHEET (Plastic)
OBSERVATIONS:
• Always make a light groove along the line you need to cut the styrene and only then apply pressure so that the
blades follow the groove made earlier.
• Always flatten the crest of styrene with a scale (or any flat surface ) before you break the piece off.
• Always use a very limited quantity of chloroform (only using a needle applicator) for sticking the styrene pieces
together and move the pieces to mix the molten styrene together to form a strong enough bond.
• Always soften the styrene before sticking it over a curved surface ; make the styrene pliable from both sides
using a roller.
• One can also bend styrene using a wire heater or a heat gun and then bending it over a die. while doing this,
do not heat the styrene too much or it will melt.
• Either don’t make a mistake or cover it up well. And that is exactly what we must do before we paint it. And
Polyester putty is our saviour – apply it repeatedly and sand it to perfection before you primer and paint the
model.
• Do not pick up more putty than required for that application because it dries up in a jiffy .
• One must remember that the more hardener we mix with the putty, the faster it dries.
• Do not use more than 2 to 3 strokes while applying putty or it starts to peel right off.
• NC putty can be used as primer ( A primer coat is absolutely essential as it helps the paint stick to the styrene)
• The NC putty is most commonly coupled along with NC paint, which is sprayed over the final model.

MATERIAL : THERMOCOL OR EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE (Plastic)

OBSERVATIONS:
• Thermocol is a very soft material and is very flexible in the sense that it can be used to make complicated solid
models to a great level of accuracy and speed.
• Thermocol is extremely easy to cut and is commonly cut with a heated wire cutter. One must take care not to
place the wire at the same location for a long time while cutting it as it radially vaporizes the Thermocol around
it.
• Do not move the wire over the Thermocol too fast or the wire will snap.
• Thermocol can be sanded to perfection. The easiest way to sand Thermocol is using the grinding wheel
• Thermocol can be stuck with fevicol but it requires time to dry and bond properly.
• Do not use chloroform or feviquick since it eats away the Thermocol
• Thermocol needs to be puttied with acrylic putty to cover up the grains and imperfections on its surface. (Apply in
layers to cover the imperfections of putty and then sand it)
• Use only water based paints to paint over the Thermocol.
