There are many recipes for malunggay or moringa, considered by many scientists as the miracle

vegetable or the healthiest vegetable on earth.

This is because malunggay is such an adaptable, healthful, low-cost, and low-maintenance
vegetable. It has been used for generations to fight hunger, malnutrition, and certain diseases in
parts of Asia, Africa, and South America.

So what exactly does malunggay offer nutritionally? The list of nutrients is long. Some of these
nutrients are:

 Zinc
 Vitamin E
 Vitamin C
 Vitamin B6
 Vitamin B5
 Vitamin B3
 Vitamin B2
 Vitamin B12
 Vitamin B1
 Vitamin A
 Protein
 Potassium
 Manganese
 Magnesium
 Lutein
 Iron
 Flavonoids
 Copper
 Calcium
 Biotin
Malunggay also has more nutrients than most other vegetable and fruits. It has:

 Seven times the Vitamin C of oranges

 Four times the calcium of milk
 Four times the vitamin A of carrots
 Three times the potassium of bananas
 Three times the iron of spinach
 Two times the protein of milk
 Two times the protein of yogurt
Health Benefits of Moringa
 Surprisingly, moringa plant contains nutritional value as well as qualities which provides for
millions of impoverished people from different parts of the world who badly need for
nutritional supplements including protein, minerals , and vitamins.
 Moringa green leaves can serve as a wonderful source of protein which is a typical feature for
any herbs and leafy-greens in all populations of plants. Every 100 g of fresh raw leaves can
contain 9.8 g of protein or about 17.5% of daily-required levels. Dry and powdered leaves are
highly recommended to use due to good source of some quality amino acids.
 In addition, the leaves are one of the excellent sources of minerals like calcium, iron, copper,
manganese, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. Iron reduces the symptoms of anemia. Calcium
is required for bone mineralization while zinc plays a critical role in lengthening hair,
spermatogenesis, and skin health condition.
 Fresh pods and seeds offer rich source of oleic acid, a health-benefiting monounsaturated fat.
Moringa, having high-quality oilseed crop, can be grown alternatively to enhance nutrition
levels in many drought regions of Africa and Asia.
 The greens and pods contain good amounts of many vital B-complex vitamins such as
folates,vitamin-B6(pyridoxine), thiamin (vitamin B-1), riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and
niacin. Much of these vitamin regulate co-enzymes in carbohydrate, fat metabolism and
protein.

Safety Usage
In spite of the fact that moringa plant affords numerous health-benefiting qualities, it is strongly
suggested to use it as a vegetable but not as medicine. Moringa root possesses alkaloid spirochin,
which is a potential neuro-paralytic toxin. In contrast, its leaves when being consumed in large
quantities may pose a threat to your overall health condition causing stomach upset, loose-stools
and gaseous distension coming down to the laxative properties.

Various private and public research group sees malunggay as a potential weapon against malnutrition. The
World Health Organization (WHO) promoted this plant as a low-cost health enhancer in poor countries around
the globe. In an article published by SunStar back in 2010 a doctor from Senegal said: “We have always had
problems with the classical approach to treating malnourished children. This was based on industrial products:
whole milk powder, vegetable oil and sugar. All these things are expensive. When you tell a parent to go out
and buy these things, this can be truly costly for him. But in the case of malunggay, it’s a different story. It is
locally available and the people themselves can produce it. We have done experiments in treating
malnourished children with this plant and the results have been really spectacular.”
