STUDENTS OF TAFT NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLING

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION:
Fraternity is long been existing worldwide since Ancient times. The term “frat” is
derived from Latin “frater” which means “brother”. It is basically a term used to define a body
of people associated for a common purpose or interest. Fraternity in western concept
developed in the Christian context as far back as ancient Greece and Rome, and in the late
medieval period all confraternities which were lay organizations allied not ably with the religion
orders to the catholic church. The development of free masonry in the early 1700s became a
watershed moment in the fraternal organization, and there have been hundreds of varieties of
free masonry, and thousand of closely parallel organization since then. Despite the Cong
running existence of fraternities still a member of high school and college students consider it
as a popular prospect, some sees it cool or even though the influence of colleagues(i whitt
and associate 2005,1991)
Fraternities can be organized for many purposes, including education, skills, ethics,
ethnicity, religion, politics, charity, other standards of personnel conduct asceticism, service,
performing arts, family command of territory and even crime. This have been being practice
since late 18 century some organization plagued by racist, misogyny, homophobia and hyper
masculinity that put on a good enough front and maintain a wall of secrecy to continue without
addressing these issues. The only true distinction between a fraternity and any other form of
social organizations that the members freely associate as equals for a mutually beneficial
purpose. Here in the Philippines there have been hundreds of fraternal organizations, and the
begging of the 20th century number of membership are getting increased most especially
college & Universities, and the most alarming in even High School Students nowadays are
getting involved( Franklin square group 2003).

Of Fraternity To The Academic Performance Of The Students Of Taft National High School”.

abide the norms and some are getting involves to juvenile crime. This research is the reason
of every students who joins fraternity, and how they get involved to an organization. This may

RRL ( REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE)

Critics of the value of fraternities and sororities have considerable evidence to
support detrimental aspects of membership. Advocates counters that findings
represent isolated cases comparable to the same rate of incidents by nonmember
students or students in other campus organization. The continued recurrence of the
argument highlights a practice related of fraternal involvement. ( ASHE , 2014) Exact
figures for the number of college students nationally involved in these organizations
are hard to pin down. However, from perusing several documents on the internet, I
would estimate that roughly 1 million current students belong to fraternities and
sororities, and that when alumni are counted in the total, the number may be as high
as a million ( examples of the statistics one can find are available here and here)
According to ( Reitman , 2011)

THE REASONS WHY STUDENTS JOIN FRATERNITY

Fraternity attained a lot of bad publicity, as with the well known hazing problems that
leads to the death of the neophyte due to excessive gazing. Nevertheless, there is a
brighter side to fraternities and sororities that people do not see.

WHY DO STUDENTS JOIN FRATERNITY?

1. LONG TERM FRIENDSHIP- Students have the opportunity to meet new

2. friends with different interest as a member of a fraternity.

3. SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES- Most of fraternities and sororities participate in

community service and taking part in different opportunities and activities

like charitable events, community service.

4. ACCEPTANCE- Most freshmen students usually join fraternities because

they want to gain confidence, and so they need to look for a group to be

part of it. The first step in accomplishing this is simple, you must remember

the rushes name and making sure they remember yours.

5. SUPPORT SYSTEM- There are problems that most of the students

encounter in their day to day life most especially in school. They need a

reliable support system. Fraternities and sororities has close band where

they can get some advice from an old member of the frat about school, life,

career, etc.

6. PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT- Fraternities develop your whole

personality. There are activities like parties that develop you social skill;

games that develop your sportsmanship; and some activities that develop

your shyness and awkward.

7. CAREER QUEST- Being a member of a fraternity and sorority may be have

the advantage when applying for a job after graduation.

8. BELONGINESS- The person joins fraternity to be recognized and be a part

of something. Fraternity or sorority is like a home away from home as a

dorm, group of friends or something, or university organization can.

9. DON WANT TO LEFT BEHIND- As a someone who is new in college,

10. everything is new and you meet unfamiliar faces

11. LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE- As a member of a fraternity, usually you are
assigned to some specific duty. They also encourage every member to
contribute in one way not only in helping each other but in running a national
organization.
12. TO PARTY- Since fraternity or sororities are commonly involved in lots of
parties and drinking. Some of the students who usually want to join
fraternity want to experience going to parties while some are party goes
who just want to have fun.
Joining fraternities also means taking responsibilities and commitment in the group.
Although it has negative sides like “ initiation rites” in welcoming the neophytes that
sometimes causes of death and injuries. As cited by ( O boob , 2017)

EFFECTS OF JOINING TO THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND TO

THEIR FAMILY

Based on (Tyler , 2017) Greek life has long been a part of the college
experience and fraternities are still a popular prospect of many new students.
However , fraternities often make headlines one or more of their members
commit crimes. While all fraternities cant be lumped into one category or
stereotype as bad some general similarities exist that have given fraternity
negative reputation. According to Isaac Yahir Delgado 2015 fraternities are
very limited to students. One negative and very powerful effect that these
fraternities have in students in such that students are willing to do almost
anything in order to be socially accepted and counted as a part of the fraternity
and receive such privileges. Fraternities have aa positive and negative side,
depending on the perception and the position of the person. As cited by Lacier
2018 you might stereotype by peers even if you had a great impression of
fraternities and sororities before you came to college and even better one once
you learned about all the great initiatives your schools Greek organization. You
might be stereotype by faculty. You might be having an amazing, life changing
experience as a member of your professors who were after all, college students
themselves once might not have had as great of an experience during their
own undergraduate years.
