Respected Sir,

Our coagulant tank contains acetic acid , calcium nitrate & water.
We have prepared freshly the coagulant solution by adding

Calcium nitrate tetrahydrate = 150 kg,

Acetic acid = 49.5 kg,
Rest is water

% mass of calcium nitrate present in the raw material of calcium nitrate = 68.5 %,
So Mass of calcium nitrate added = 150 * 0.68 = 102.75 kg,

% of acetic acid present in the raw material of acetic acid = 98 %,

So Mass of acetic acid added = 49.5* 0.98 = 48.51 kg,

The dimensions of the Coagulant tank are,

Length = 199.5 cm = 1.995 meter,

Breadth= 100 cm = 1 meter,
Height = 64 cm = 0.64 meter,

Total Height of the prepared Coagulant solution in the tank = 61.5 cm = 0.615 meter,
So,
The total volume of the coagulant solution in the tank = 199.5 * 100 * 61.5 = 1226925 cm3 =
1.226925 m3.

The gravity of the solution measured using the hydrometer = 1.03 gram / ml.

Density = mass / volume i,e = Mass = Volume * Density = 1226925 cm3 * 1.03 gram / ml = 1263733
gm
= 1263.733 kg,

So the total mass of the coagulant solution = 1263.733 kg

% mass of calcium nitrate present the coagulant solution = (mass of Ca(NO3)2 added / mass of the
coagulant solution) * 100

= ( 102.75 kg / 1263.733 kg) * 100

= 0.081307 * 100
= 8.13 %,
Similarly
% mass of acetic acid present the coagulant solution = (mass of acetic acid added / mass of the
coagulant solution) * 100

= (48.51 kg / 1263.733 kg) * 100

= 0.038386* 100
= 3.83 %,

BUT WHILE CALCULATING WITH THE CALCULATION BELOW I AM NOT GETTING THE EXPECTED
VALUE ,
1.0 OBJECTIVE : To Check the % of Calcium Nitrate in Build Up Coagulant tank
2.0 APPARATUS REQUIRED : Burette, Pipette, Conical Flask.
3.0 CHEMICALS REQUIRED : 0.1M EDTA, 1N NaOH.
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Mix the respective tank before taking the sample.

4.2 Take 100ml of distilled water in a conical flask, add 0.5 ml of sample to it and add
approximately 4ml of 1N NaOH

4.3 Mix well and add very little Murexide indicator. Titrate it against 0.1M EDTA taken in
a burette.

4.4 End Point is colour change from Pink to Violet.

4.5 Note down the burette readings.

5.0 CALCULATION :

CALCULATION 1:

ml of titrate MOLARITY of EDTA

% of Calcium Nitrate = --------------------- X -------------------------------- X 2
ml of sample Specific gravity

= (1.7 * 0.1*2) / ( 0.5*1.03)

=0.660194 %

CALCULATION 2:

ml of titrate M. wt. of EDTA

2. % of Calcium Nitrate = -------------- X -----------------------X 100 X 2

ml of sample Specific gravity

= ((1.7*372.24*100*2)/(0.5*1.03))

= 245750.7

I have prepared 0.1M EDTA by adding 37.9 gram in 1 litre of Distilled water because EDTA is 98%
assay purity.
I have determined density of coagulant solution in coagulant tank by using hydrometer which
showed =1.03 g/ml
1.0 OBJECTIVE : To Check the % of Acid present in Build up
Coag tank, Finish Coag tank, Funnel Slurry tank.

2.0 APPARATUS REQUIRED : Burette, Pipette, Conical Flask.

3.0 CHEMICALS REQUIRED : 1N NaOH, Phenolpthalein indicator.
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Mix the coagulants tank using a stirrer.

4.2 Take 20ml of the sample in a conical flask.

To the conical flask add 2 – 3 drops of Phenolpthalein indicator and titrate it against
1N NaOH taken in a burette.
4.4 End Point is colour change from Colourless to Pink, note the burette reading.

5.0 CALCULATION :

ml of titrate Molarity of Acetic Acid

% CH3COOH Present in Coagulant = ---------------- X ------------------------------ X 10
ml of sample Specific gravity

= (11.9 * 1) / ( 20*1.03)*10

= 5.78 %

ml of titrate M. wt. of Acetic Acid

2. % CH3COOH Present in Coagulant = ---------------- X --------------------------- X 100
ml of sample Specific gravity

=((11.9*60*100)/(20*1.03))

= 3466.019

I have prepared 1 N NaOH by adding 41.23 gram in 1 litre of Distilled water because NaOH is 97%
assay.
I have determined density of coagulant solution in coagulant tank by using hydrometer which
showed =1.03 g/ml.

BUT WHILE CALCULATING WITH THE CALCULATION BELOW I AM NOT GETTING THE EXPECTED
VALUE , PLEASE GIVE ME SOME SUGGESTION whether my calculation is correct or not.
Which one is correct 1 0r 2 . KINDLY PROVIDE YOUR VALUABLE SUGGESTION .
