Fertilizers : Tvpes
The different type of in organic fertilizers are usually classified fertilizers according to presence ofthree
principal elements namely, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K).

1. Nitrogenous inorganicfertilizers

The Nitrate fertilizers contain the nitrogen in the form of NO3. These ions are easily lost by
leaching because of the greater mobility of nitrate ions in the soil. continuous use of these
fertilizers may reduce the soil acidity as these nitrogenous fertllizers are basic in their residual
effect on soils.

Ammonical and nitrate fertilizers contain nitrogen in both ammonium and nitrate forms. The
nitrates are useful for rapid utilization by crops and the ammonical is gradually available

Examples inorganic nitrogenous fertilizers are:

a. Sodium Nitrate with 16% of NitroBen

b. Ammonium Sulphate with 21% of Ammonical Nitrogen
c. Ammonium Nitrate with 35% of Nitrogen
d. Urea - Highly concentrated (45% )Nitrogenous fertilizer (Synthetic Organic)
Potassium Nltrate contains 13.0 % nitrogen and 36.4 % potassium.
f. Calcium nitrate [Ca (NO:)zl 15.5 % nitrogen and 19.5 % calcium. The calcium is
useful for maintaining a desirable soil pH
8. Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) containing 26 per cent of nitrogen. 50% of its
total nitrogen is in the ammonical form and other 50% is in nitrate form. lt is
almost neutral and can be safely applied even to acid soils
h. Ammonium nitrate {NH4N03). Containing 35 % nitrogen; half as nitrate nitrogen
and half in the ammonium form
2. Phosphaticinorganicfertilizers

Phosphatic fertilizer hardly moves in the soil and hence they are placed in the, root zone.

Examples inorganic phosphatic fertilizers are:

a. Rock phosphate
b. Phosphoric Acid
c. Single Suoer phosohate with 16% of phosphoric Acid
d. Di-Catcium phosphate with 30-40% of phosphoric Acid

3. Examples inorganic potassium fertilizers are:

d. ryrunate or potash(MOp) primarily (potassium
Chloride) KCL
b. Sulphate of potash(SOp) primarily (potassium
Sulphatej r:SOo
c. Di-Calcium phosphate with 30_40% of phosphoric
