Proposal on STEM Club- Sri KDU Primary

School

Starting Date: 20th February 2019

Age Group: 7 to 12 years old

Company Profile & Background
STEM Academy Malaysia is formally owned by Vooble Asia Sdn Bhd and now
being owned by STEAM Education Sdn Bhd. It is under the same
management team of SCS Education Group, in which the sister academy,
MTTC Academy is offering architectural & engineering professional courses in
tertiary level and also life-long training for working professionals.

The co-founders of STEM Academy Malaysia are Mr SK Chew, an Electrical

Engineer by profession and Ms Charlenne Ong, an architectural graduate.
Both of the co-founders find that there is a need to instill strong interest in
STEM education for younger generation.

The future workforce is about learning the right skills to survive and succeed
in the workplace. They need to be extremely adaptive to the fast-changing
environment. They need to learn new skills in a very fast pace.

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching
out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most
important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues

that today's school children are facing a "global achievement gap", which is
the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills
young people need to learn.

In STEM Academy, we create our syllabus based on the above guidelines,

implementing the creative course outlines and standards. We then certified
the kids with the Warnborough College (UK) Certificate of Completion.

STEM Academy Malaysia is the 1st Design Engineering School for children
aged 7-15 in Malaysia.

Example of a session of Engineering Week (Each activity

takes 30 minutes to an hour):

1. Build a Water raft Challenge

In this activity, students work together to build a boat out of straws and

plastic wrap that can hold 25 pennies for at least 10 seconds before sinking.

Learning outcome:

 Engineering design process

 Physical principles of buoyancy

2. Build and Design a Paper Penny Bridge

In this activity, students build a bridge from a single sheet of paper and up to

five paper clips that will span 20cm and support the weight of 100 pennies.

Being realistic, they need to consider the limited budgets and must make

trade-offs in material.

Learning outcome:

 Engineering design process

 Physical forces

3. Design a Water Filter

In this activity, students will be divided into groups to build a water filter

from given materials in order to get clean water when tested with dirty

water.

Learning Outcome:

 Creativity (Design method)

 Problem Solving Skills
Learning Outcome at the end of programme:

 Creativity
 Test and refine designs.
 Communicate design process and results
 Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving Skills
 Curiosity & Imagination
 Practice fine motor and eye-hand coordination.
 Improve and learn through trial and error
 Good Oral & Communication Skills
 Accessing & Analyzing Information
 Learn about structural engineering.
 Learn about engineering design and redesign.
 Learn how engineering can help solve society's challenges.
 Learn about teamwork and problem solving.
