TITLE OF THESIS: URBAN GONDOLA: A Pre-Feasibility Study of an Urban Cable Car System from Cebu
to Mactan Island.

THESIS STATEMENT:

Metro Cebu for the past years has seen an exponential growth in urban development. Along with this
development is the worsening traffic problem especially in both Marcelo Fernan and Sergio Osmeña
Bridge. The unresolved traffic congestion in Metro Cebu has resulted in at least P1.1 billion in economic
losses a day according to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) report. Most ferry system is
unsafe and unreliable especially in bad weather conditions. According to statistics from japan transport
safety board

The idea is to provide seamless transportation, and other alternative or an addition of the existing
transport system within metro Cebu. A cable car is a system of transportation that relies on cable to pull
the vehicles. The vehicles are motor less and engineless and only pulled by an outboard single primary
motor. Methods and types of inquiry to be employed would be done in surveys and research. By posing
questions, problems or scenarios that are later to be developed.

PROGRAM:

The researches chose this topic to address the growing problem involving transportation in metro
Cebu. Aiming to provide seamless transportation between the two islands but also providing comfortable
terminals. The cities of central and southern Americas are using these system and its been successful,
transporting passenger and this project can economically uplift areas according to the Economist article
on 2017. The DOTr is also seeing cable car as an alternative mass transport, According to Sec. Arthur
Tugade in his speech at Asia CEO forum. As a developing city that is every day on a move, needs an
alternative and reliable transport means for the people.

SITE:

The site would still be selected through site selection. The proper site criteria should be located at
the Metro Cebu In highly urbanized areas

TECHNOLOGY:

In the development of the structure technology is applied through the principles of tensile and
suspension design, high efficiency & energy saving construction is also included together with the
exclusive routes for the transport system. Customized car bodies are also enhanced for the passenger’s
enjoyment and add to the systems functionality by increasing passenger capacity and security options.
Sustainable architecture in manufacturing and construction, modular designs in the system allows the
terminals to be personalized and allows future expansion. Applying the most advance technology will
allow the system to be successful in meeting its future demands.
