Perception of Students on the Most and the Least Favorite

Subjects in Paliparan National High School

I. INTRODUCTION

Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge,


skills, values, beliefs and habits. However, some students seem have favorite or
least favorite subjects. This make some students excel in various subjects or failed
in various subjects. What would make a student hate any subject and yet love the
others? The following are the reasons why students to like or dislike certain subjects
at school.

According to the poll in Soda-Head.com (2014), English took the title as the favorite
subject with 22% of votes, followed by History at 21% of votes and followed by
Science at 18% of votes. The least favorite subject was Mathematics with 40% of
votes followed by Physical Education at 17% and English at 10% of votes.

According to Diaz (2017) some subjects particularly Math and Science deals with
problem solving. Students often view problem solving as difficult and very hard to
comprehend. It deals that students need to memorize the formulas to figure out
those problems.

According to Swaga (2014) some of students concentrate more on the subjects that
they are considered as simpler and easy to understand and they gave little attention
to some difficult subjects.

According to Brenton (2017) students who interest in various subjects cam be a real
challenge to students. There are so many variables that can affect their engagement
to the subject.

According to McCarthy (2014) student’s interest in a subject when the topics connect
to what students like to do, engagement depends as they willingly spend their time
to learn about what they like in meaningful ways.
This study sought to determine the most and the least favorite subject in students of
Paliparan National High School specifically this study sought to answer the different
questions:

1. What is the most favorite subject?

2. What is the least favorite subject?

3. What are the factors why students like that subject?

4. What are the factors why students dislike the subject?

II. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Many researchers found evidences concerning the reason why student like and
disliked certain subjects (Montemar, 2015; Diaz, 2017; Merie, 2017; Spielgaben,
2013; Sundquist, 2017; Satwadhar, 2018; Tsui, 2005; Goodchild, 2005)

According to Montemar (2015) students are not educated to be critical thinkers but
they are trained to be submissive.

According to Diaz (2017) students most often complain that the lessons become
boring when they feel like they’re too hard to catch up the lessons.

According to Merie (2017) students are sometimes forced by their parents to study in
able to understand clearly the lessons.

Aside from that Spielgaben (2013) some students loses their interests in certain
subject because some teachers shout at their students when they are not focusing
on what teacher is discussing.

On the other hand Sundquist (2017) students who can identify their passion on
certain subjects and they can pursue them are more engaged and motivated on that
subject.
According to Tsui (2005) students interest in communication skill so they interested
in languages so in that way they can practice to communicate with the other people.

In addition Goodchild (2005) students want to express and show their self in many
ways that they can. They are to be in imaginative and creative students which is not
possible in any subjects.

III. METHODOLOGY

This study use descriptive method to determine the reasons why they like or dislike
some subjects of selected students in Paliparan National High school S.Y. 2018-
2019. The participants which are composed of 100 students in Paliparan National
High School were selected through random sampling method.

It sought to answer the following questions:


1. What is the most favorite subject?

2. What is the least favorite subject?

3. What are the factors why students like that subject?

4. What are the factors why students dislike the subject?

The researchers used frequently distributions to show the frequency of the answer of
respondents in the variables for demographic profile and items for the reason why
student like or dislike some subjects in Paliparan National High School on the
academic performance of the students.
