Chapter I

Background of the Study

Nowadays, the technology for social media have been continuously growing and

being patronized by many people around the world. According to the news from Business

Inquirer last February 2018, the Philippines had topped again as one of the largest

population of social media users worldwide and hit 67 million people. The most widely

used social media applications by Filipinos based on the statistics of StatCounter (2018)

are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.

One of the most prominent and used social media application in the Philippines is

YouTube. It gained the 11.45% of the total social media users in the Philippines last

November 2018 on the said statistics of StatCounter (2018). It is a video-sharing

application wherein users can like, comment, share, watch and create their own videos.

YouTube first launched on November 2005 by the three co-workers of PayPal. The

application has not been stopping from developing every year since it was made; features

has been always upgrading, the content of the videos becoming more broad and

subscribers become more and more. Many are involved here due to its accessibility;

users can use it on laptop, mobile phones, tablet and etc. Many viewers are teenagers

and it is a great platform for them to discover things and entertain themselves. Also, many

of them subscribes on different channel in video-sharing service of their favorite YouTube

Bloggers also known as “Vloggers” (short term for Video Bloggers) or “YouTubers” to get

updated on their YouTube videos. These Vloggers are persons who use YouTube as a

tool to express themselves through videos such as telling their opinion about something

and showing their personalities in their uploaded videos.

Since many of the teenagers nowadays in the Philippines are using YouTube, the

researchers came up with the study to know the effect of these Filipino YouTube Vlogs

and Vloggers affect the academic performance of the students specifically from the

Polytechnic University of the Philippines grade 12 Senior High School.

This study will mainly identify and assess the impacts of the YouTube vloggers

and their vlog videos to Polytechnic University of the Philippines Senior High School

(PUPSHS) students and to know how it affects the academic performances of the

students. The study yearns to identify how the students cope up with their academic

activities while watching vlogs. The study will hold the interpretation and information of

the main subject of the study and how it will be analyzed. It will show the different vloggers

and the content of their vlogs in the Philippines and it will determine the perceived

advantages and disadvantages of vloggers and their vlogs and how the respondents will

be influenced in terms of their performances in academic.

Statement of the Problem

The study seeks to identify the effects of watching Filipino YouTube vloggers and

vlogs in the academic performance of the Grade 12 students from Polytechnic Univeristy

of the Philippines. The researchers sought to answer these questions:

How does watching Filipino YouTube Vloggers and vlogs affect the academic

performance of students?

A) The disadvantages and advantages of watching vlogs and vloggers in

the academic performance of students

B) The influence of the vlogs and vloggers to the students

Hypotheses

The following are the hypotheses formulated in this study that answer the problem

statements:

1) Watching Vlogs from different famous local vloggers aid the students to be

motivated and inspired to study harder in school to be able to get better grades.

2) Watching Vlogs from different famous local vloggers do not provide any positive

effects or results to students with regards to their performance in school

3) There are lot of advantages and disadvantages in watching vlogs that could be

beneficial or unhelpful to students in relative to their academic performance

4) Various vlogs and vloggers create a huge influence and impact that might be

both positive and negative to students.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Students. The findings of this study will redound to the benefit of students considering

that modern technology plays a significant role in education nowadays and one of

example of these is YouTube Vlogs. It will greatly help students who are not aware of the

possible impact of the Filipino Vloggers to their studies and also for them to improve their

study habits. It can help them improve their learning and also, their attitude towards

learning.

Teachers. This study can also benefit the teachers for them to add more effective learning

materials in their lessons. It can give them a better and further understanding regarding

to the modern ideas that will help them to bring more knowledge to their students.
Parents. This can give awareness to the parents of the possible impact of the YouTube

Vloggers to their children in terms of their academic performance. It will give them ideas

on how will they guide their children to improve their performance in school.

Vloggers/Bloggers. This study would enable them to know how to improve their vlogs

to have a better impact to students’ academic performance.

Future Researchers. This study would help the future student researchers to be

knowledgeable about how vlog/vloggers could affect academic performance and it can

also be a future reference to them.

Scope and Limitations

The study will be limited to the Senior High School Grade 12 students of

Polytechnic University of the Philippines. There are thirty respondents coming from six

different strands which are Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS), General Academic Strand (GAS), Information Communication Technology

(ICT) and Arts and Design Track (ADT). Only those who watch YouTube Vlogs will be

chosen to answer the survey forms. They will be given questionnaires to answer based

on their consciousness and awareness regarding the topic. The research study is limited

to Filipino Vloggers. To ensure that there will be no waste of time, the questionnaires will

involve multiple choice items, checklist, and ranking or rating questions and did not

involve some essay. The researchers will also ask the respondents’ grades on the first

semester of grade twelve, school year 2018-2019 through the questionnaires. The survey

form includes their demographic profile, the list of Filipino Vloggers and Vlogs genres that
they might always watch, and twenty five different statement that they will rate which will

be relevant to answer the objectives of the study.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Theoretical Framework

The integration of media in higher education assignments has many benefits, as

is evident in the research literature. It can support student inquiry by expanding the range

of questions to be asked and the expectation of the collection of different types of

information (Winnie, 2010).

Prensky’s understanding of digital natives (2001) opened up a debate about how

students learn and how technology has changed their learning. Margaryan, Littlejohn and

Vojt (2011) found that students of a technical discipline are more inclined to use

technology tools. Keller’s attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction and volition

(ARCS-V) model (2016) provides a framework to understand the success of the

integration of the development of a YouTube video as a reflective assignment. The model

suggests that the main categories that comprise the model should promote motivation.

Figure 1 illustrates the ARCS-V model that is used as a theoretical

framework for the integration of video-based reflection in this study .

Figure 1. The ARCS-V Theoretical Framework

The students’ attention is immediately drawn to the novelty of the assignment,

as it is challenging to develop a YouTube video. They may also find it relevant to reflect

on their project through a video where they can showcase their project to their peers and

the community.

The students also show volition, as they are motivated to complete the YouTube.

Confidence can, with the possibility of “instant fame” via the YouTube video or the number

of “likes” on YouTube, lead to a feeling of satisfaction. The motivational components of

the ARCS-V model consolidate the interactions between the YouTube video, individuals,

peers and campus-community partners. All these stakeholders have a shared, but unique

motivational interest in the outcome of the development of the video as linked to the

interactions of the broader community and the possibility of “instant fame” via YouTube.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Vlogs have brought about a new form in multimedia usage. According to Westernberg

(2015), people nowadays are now more into social networking sites. This allows them to

participate and to create their own desired content through social networking and

weblogs. Our generation today are exposed to these kinds of multimedia and share their

experiences and opinions about everything. One of the most popular platforms for Vlogs

is YouTube. Although it is used by all ages, YouTube is very well-known by teenagers.

Definition of Vlog/Vlogging

A vlog or video blog is a blog that contains a video content. Vlogging is becoming

more common as equipment becomes cheaper and supporting and hosting and

aggregation sites become prevalent (Rouse, 2006). Vlog also defines as the video

component that provides a series of online broadcast which allows everyone to post and

create different contents and considers it as video collection that serve both as an audio-

visual life documentary and as a way of communication. Maulidah (2018) found that when

students have already done their videos, they start to find a way in able for other to know

especially sharing it with their teacher, class and friends.

According to Brokamp (2012), “vlogging is very similar to blogging, which is where

people post information, ideas, or different works on a web site. The main difference

between vlogging and blogging is that the medium is video instead of text”. Vlogging is

the method of vlog making, while vlog is the artistic content created by someone to share

their regular activity using a video. In general, vlog is created to share information that is

funny, unique, educative, and interesting to catch the attention of the viewers.
Furthermore, it can also be used for students’ personal expression and reflection.

Students felt successful in terms of learning and were more motivated to study and it also

increased their self-confidence and self-esteem when using computer-based instruction.

This was particularly true when the technology allowed learners to control their own

learning (Jayanthi & Kumar, 2016).

As explained by Snelson (2015) Vlogs are in a diverse of contexts including but

not limited domestic settings and they have various contents such as fashion, luxury

brands, beauty and others, which makes advantageous to people with different needs

which the content is available for everyone. Based on dictionary of Indonesian Language,

the video is an act of recording of alive images or television programs to show or air via

the television set, to simplify words, it is a video display moving images are convoyed by

sound, music or voice. Media is considered as audio visual media types. While Audio

visual media is media that depend on the sense of hearing and by sight. This medium

can enhance to the attentiveness and awareness of students in education.

In today’s generation, when the web was developed, basically all forms of online

media were also developed like YouTube proposed for sharing video and also for allowing

to upload videos that a person can watch (Digital Unite, ND).

YouTube is a current vlog site that agreements users upload, tag, and share video clip

by making them well-known around the world. As defined by Wikipedia [2008],

videoblogging, or known as vlogging, is a method of blogging in which the instrument and

medium is a video. It is regularly made with vlog entries and combine fixed video or with

a link with assistant text, images and other information. As the time goes by, vlogging has

increased so much attention and courtesy international, specifically with the online media
the Google’s acquirement of YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2016. This has catch to

beginning audience, who are classically prepared with common technological mobile

devices such as laptop, editing application and camera phones.

Conventionally, blogging is a written action, which is limited because text is one

aspect of the diverse skills needed to understand and manage several aspects of modern

communication (Hoem 2005).

Effects of Vlogs to Viewers

Based on the research done by Defy Media, 96% of teenagers/students are

regularly watching YouTube. They consumed more hours in watching making it their most

visited websites. In this case, YouTubers seen as role models for the youth. Their

behavior would greatly affect the viewers and most of it are students. As stated by the

Cambridge University Press (2016). Media awareness is portrayed as the understanding

of the different methods for displaying information in newspapers, on television, and on

the internet including the possible uses and dangers of these methods. Children do not

have a profound understanding and broad knowledge to make wise decisions.

As indicated by Smith (2009), the huge shift towards the user-driven technologies

such as blogs, social networks and video-sharing platforms enabled the revolution and

development of the User-Generated Content (UGC). UGC refers to all the various media

content which was produced or created only by the public and not by the paid

professionals (Daugherty, Eastin & Bright, 2008). This User-Generated Content is now

referred to as social media as stated by Smith (2009). Through this, people are now

having the ability to participate in all kinds of applications such as weblogs, online

journalism and social networking and create their own content based on their daily basis.
They are open and have the freewill to share their own experiences and opinions about

everything; from product qualities, political issues, problems, advices to people, and

tutorials.

Today’s adolescents and young adults, so-called millennial (Strauss and Howe,

2000), were born and have grown up in an environment permeated by media, and so their

“natural” ecosystem can be described as the 2.0 social media environment. We know that

the interaction of children with YouTube involves a great series of characteristics, such

as collaboration with family including peers, interaction with the viewers, different learning

opportunities, identity information and civic engagement (Lange, 2014; Lenhart and al.,

2015).

Engaging vlogs encourage people and mostly students to explore their world and

perhaps even look for different links in the Doobly Doo which is known for a creative

nickname for the YouTube in formation box and continue that exploration outside the

classroom. Whether assigning students to create vlogs, make their own, or just simply

integrate clips that approach content in a new exciting way, video blogs are a fun and

interesting tool to use for class presentations or discussions (Fuglei, 2015).

Effects of Vlogs as an Academic Tool

As Fernandez, Simo, Algab states, students can access YouTube in any kinds of

topic and in any material form. These topics, ideas, lessons and concepts ranges from

different difficulty. As found by Clifton and Mann (2011), there is an increase in the

learning skills of nursing students who received a module in undergraduate nursing with

YouTube resources. YouTube videos were seen to improve memory skills for tests,
increase intrinsic and instrumental value and interest, entertain, and help non-majors to

remain focused on the topic at hand, as per Eick & King Jr. (2012).

In this era, Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) can be used for students

to encourage in obtaining the goal of learning that is “effective language learning”

meaningfully. According to Maulidah (2018), the existence of web-vlogging is one of the

best feature from CMC in which it provides the application of vlog. It can facilitate students

to reach their goal of learning through its existence.

Vlogging is one innovation to provide a better teacher for learning process

especially in speaking. The correlation with social media and technology makes it fun to

be implemented to the students for it will sophistically increase the ability of students in

speaking. Speaking competency plays a significant role for students in understanding and

learning language. It is used to express different thoughts using verbal utterances.

“Speaking is a productive skill, oral skill. Speaking is a human interaction which is used

to share information to other.” (Bailey, 2003) It enables the students to express

themselves imaginatively and creatively to interact with others in achieving a goal or to

express their different sight such as opinions, intentions, hopes and viewpoints.

YouTube video regarding educational tutorials are considered very efficient and

effective tools in learning a specific or general knowledge about a subject area. According

to Fathallah (2007), educational video clips are recorded educational situation that

includes real elements, ranging in length between (3-7) minutes, and teaches a specific

goal‖. YouTube provides many services including upload, download, watching and

sharing video. YouTube allows exchange views and proposals about the video, also

allocation channels for transfer lectures and conferences, and channels for courses which
display series of videos to explain the skills and educational experiences. With that, these

are nothing but some evidence why YouTube has a dense use especially in the aspect

of education. Due to the huge educational uses of it, Google launched the service

"YouTube for Schools" which includes video clips of educational materials and courses.

It allows active, constructive, and interactive learning opportunities.

As argue by Balcikanli (2011) regarding Youtube as also an effective tool for

learning language, YouTube may be significant to address the interests and needs of

students for real life language by providing authentic and effective discourse. In addition,

YouTube offers a lot of opportunities for learning a language specifically second language

as a learner cannot just watch but also listen to various kinds of spoken material which

can be formal or informal. Also, there are genres of songs, talk shows, film clip, etc; thus,

learning new vocabulary or any other language skills. Therefore, the remarks and claim

that the scenes, movements, feelings, and gestures presented in YouTube videos offer

important visual impact for language learning are highly true. Some scholars even state

that the involvement of YouTube in the language classrooms could lessen the stress that

the students may feel especially when learning a new language, it is because they could

view and perceive it as entertaining rather than educational activity. That’s how YouTube

really helps in the field of language learning.

Disadvantages of Youtube

Clifton and Mann (2011) cited that a negative factor of YouTube is unregulated

content, which can be misleading, inaccurate, or even biased. While as per Fernandez

(et al. 2011) and Stohlmann (2012) identified some issues in YouTube such as videos
with irrelevant and unnecessary information to the course or topic of study as well as gaps

in the related information which may lead to incomplete or inaccurate understanding.

Through this online activity, young audiences are building the capacity to navigate

groups publicly, in addition to discovering their identity. “Youth gain new skills and explore

their identity as they navigate the public and participants in its activities” (Chau) uniquely,

they forge empathies for certain YouTubers whom may become idols or mentors to them.

Using vlogs as medium on learning runs the risk of having to cut short meaningful

conversations, activities, or explanations because the inspiration material was too long.

(Fuglei, 2015)

According to a report published by the Dutch Ministry of Health and Consumers

Association (2016), children often influenced negatively by some videos presented in the

various medium of communication, they are being easily deceived and believe into

something that might not be true and may imitate that. On the contrary, older children

understand that not all advertisements or videos presented are always true and reliable

and therefore they are more careful to the messages that are shown (Moore and Lutz,

2000).

YouTube or Vlogging as a source of income

YouTube is changing the views of our world, including higher education. This video

sharing site receives billions of viewers every day, report shows that more than half of the

viewers are students. “Teens establish the dominant demographic on YouTube in terms

of their viewership, comments, rating and other feedback mechanisms” (Chau, 2010).

Majority of the most widely viewed video content on YouTube is created by

artists/personas called “YouTubers”, “YouTube Stars”, or “Vloggers”. These individuals

use their videos or vlogs as the main source of income. These artists now have access

to audience or viewers which could never be reached before. (Ahlquist, 2016)

Use of Vlog as entertainment

According to L. Jass (2016), the main viewers or supporters of those

vloggers/youtubers are commonly college and high school students. Those are students

who are very stressed with their school works, sports, finding job opportunities and

looking or applying for college. And as for this matter, when they watch youtubers

vlogs/videos could make them ease the stress and laugh at the same time, which they

couldn't do when they are problematic about school or works. Bentley, Earls & O'Bien

(2011) found that YouTubers are most likely the same age as their viewers, which is

easier for them to create content that fits the current frame of reference of teenagers.

People tend to share the same behavioural style or to imitate behaviour of people they

like.

Definition of Blogs

In recent years, the number of digital multi-media distributed over the online has

redoubled hugely because of nearly, anyone will follow the assembly line of digital

multimedia system content. As a result, many various forms of blogs have emerged step

by step, like art log as form of art-sharing and publishing in the format of a blog; photoblog

as a blog containing photos; sketch blog that blog containing a portfolio of sketches; and

audio blog and videoblog. They differ not only in the type of content, but also in the way

that content is delivered or written

According to Nardi (2004), Many blogs give statement or news on a selected

subject; others operate as additional personal on-line diaries. Five main blogging
motivations were identified: documenting one’s life; providing statement and opinions;

understanding emotional issues; thinking by writing; and promoting speech

communication and community. Blogs became associate degree more and more

necessary manner of learning regarding news and opinions not found in thought media,

and blogging has become a preferred group action for establishing and maintaining online

communities.

The advantages and limitations of Video vlogs according to Daryanto (2011). He

suggested that some of the excess use of video media, among others: 1) The Video adds

a new dimension in the learning, the video presents moving pictures to students along

with the accompanying sound. 2) The Video can show a phenomenon that is difficult to

be seen. While its shortcomings, among others: 1) Opposition Inappropriate retrieval may

lead to the onset of the audience doubts in interpreting the images he saw. 2) Supporting

Materials Video projection tools need to be able to display images in it. 3) Budget to create

a video that does not cost a little.

Synthesis

Vlogs and vlogging has been a mainstream activity from recent years. Social

media platforms bring and give people ideas on how to communicate with others using

video, pictures, or blogging. As for the researchers, the related studies and articles given

above are divided into seven subheadings. It involves definitions of vlogs or blogs which

stated that both of them are considered online sharing platform but they have differences

such as blogs are expressed in a literary way while vlog is a video blog that contains

videos as its content. There are different effects stated above such as its effects to
viewers especially to students’ academic performance. They can use it as their references

or tools in learning a subject area. It can also use as entertainment and source of income.

Most people nowadays commonly use it as part of their leisure time. Alongside with its

advantages, there are disadvantages that may occur if not used properly.
Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents an outline of research method that was followed in the study.

The researcher described the research design that was chosen for the purpose of this

study and the reasons for this choice. It also discussed the research locale where the

study was conducted. It gives information on the participants, that is, the criteria for

inclusion in the study, who the participants and how they were sampled. Lastly, the

instrument that was used for data collection is also described and the procedures that

were followed to carry out this study are included.

Research Design

This study used a quantitative method to assess students who are engage on

watching different YouTube vlogs/vloggers. According to McLeod (2017), a quantitative

research gathers data in a numerical form which can be put into categories, or in rank

order, or measured in units of measurement. Quantitative Research is the systematic

empirical investigation of observable phenomena via statistical, mathematical, or

computational techniques. The researcher analyses the data with the help of statistics

and hopes the numbers will yield an unbiased result that can be generalized to some

larger population and will surely come up on the results of the effect of watching Filipino

YouTube vlogs/vloggers.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Polytechnic University of the Philippines Main

Campus. It is a state university located in Sta. Mesa, Manila, Philippines. The researchers
chose the area because it is where the selected respondents are currently studying; the

Grade 12 PUPSHS Students.

Sample and Sampling Technique

In this study, cluster sampling and convenient sampling was employed for the

selection of the participants restricted only for Grade 12 students. Cluster sampling is a

method for dividing a target population into a subgroups (Harvey, 1993). Purposive

sampling is a type of nonscientific sampling in which it is based on the purpose of the

researcher in selecting the participants as a sample. Due to good evidence, a participant

is selected as a representative of the total population (Calmorin and Calmorin, 1995).

The researchers were able to gather information from the Polytechnic University

of the Philippines Senior High School. Cluster sampling is used for dividing the Grade 12

PUPSHS into six strands; Accountancy, Business and Management(ABM), Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM), Humanities and Social

Sciences(HUMSS), General Academic Strand(GAS), Information Communication

Technology(ICT) and Arts and Design Track(ADT). To get samples from each strand, the

researchers selected five samples through purposive sampling. Only students who watch

YouTube were selected as samples to answer the survey questions to get relevant

answers.

Research instrument

The researchers utilized survey questionnaires to determine the effects of Filipino

Vlogs/Vloggers to the Academic Performances of Polytechnic University of the

Philippines Senior High School Grade 12 students. This consists of checklist, rating

questions which can answer the research problem. It includes the demographic profile of
the respondents, list of Filipino Vloggers and vlog genres, and twenty five statement that

rated by the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

To gather the needed data and information, the following basic steps were

chronologically undertaken by the researchers:

1. Before conducting the survey, the researchers created a consent letter to

gather data from PUPSHS Grade 12 Student.

2. Approval of consent letter which is noted by the research instructor.

3. In conducting the survey, the researchers used the vacant time to avoid

distractions of class discussions. The students’ responses were given enough

time to answer the survey form.

4. After the data were gathered, encoding and the preparation of appropriate tools

are done to get the needed information for the study.

5. For the interpretation and analysis, the information is drawn through the study

of the data gathered.

6. The results are presented after the interpretation and analysis were done.

7. Revisions are done after the research was checked by the research adviser.

8. The data compiled and obtained during the interview were disposed through

incineration of hardcopies and deletion of softcopies.
