Lesson produce movements. When the music stops playing and someone moves then
they're out of the game. They will keep playing and stopping the music until the
last one dancing wins.
What can you say about your movement when the music is on and when
it stops?

When the music is on, your body is active while when the time when you
freeze, your body becomes passive. Your body movements is the same with
the sentences, it has active and passive voice. Voice is the quality of verbs
that shows how most verbs can change form to show if the subject is
performing the actions or having the actions performed on it.

1. WBC declared Manny Pacquiao the super featherweight champion.

2. The president sent him a congratulatory statement.
3. His fans welcomed Manny at the airport.

D. Discussing New Concepts (15 mins.)

and Practicing New Skill#1 Most transitive verbs (verbs that take an object) can be used in both
active and passive voice.
The voice of the verb does not normally affect the meaning of a sentence
but it does change the focus. In the active voice, the focus is the doer of the
action. To shift the focus to the receiver of the action, use the passive voice.
For example: His fans carried Manny to the town plaza. (active voice)
Manny was carried by his fans to the town plaza. (passive voice)

Group Activity:
In each group there will be pairs of sentences, underline the verb(s) and
identify which verbs are passive and which are active. Then encircle the noun
that serves as the main focus of each sentence.

Group 1:
WBC manager Rod Brown awarded the check.
Manny was awarded a check by WBC manager Rod Brown.
Group 2:
His grateful sponsors gave him a gold watch.
He was given a gold watch by his grateful sponsors.
Group 3:
The plaza was filled with streamers.
Streamers fills the plaza.
Group 4:
Government officials appreciate the remittances of our dollar earners
abroad.
The remittances of our dollar earners are appreciated.
Group 5:
Our boxers are recognized abroad for their skill and stamina.
Foreigners recognized our boxers for their skill and stamina.

E. Discussing New Concepts Changing sentences from passive to active voice and vice versa.
and Practicing New Skill#2 In changing sentences from active to passive and vice versa these are
the rules to be followed:

I. Simply exchange the places of the subject and the object. The
subject should become the object and vice-e-versa while changing a
sentence from Active to Passive voice or reverse.
Active voice: She bought a new car. (She is the subject and a new
car is an object.)
Passive voice: A new car was bought by her. (A new car is a subject
and her is the object.)
II. Always blindly convert the main verb into its past participle or third
form while converting from active to passive voice. To remind you
what the third form of a verb looks like, let’s look at a few examples:

First form Second form Third form

Buy Bought Bought
III. The word ¨by¨ will be used before the subject in passive voice. For
example,
Rita sings a love song. (active voice)
A love song is sung by Rita. (passive voice)
IV. Change of tense of the auxiliary word: Now when you change the
verb form of the main verb, the tense of the auxiliary also changes
accordingly. Let’s see this with the help of a few examples:
Present tense
Active voice: Sun rises from the east.
Passive voice: East is where the sun rises from.
Past tense
Active voice: She walked my dog home.
Passive voice: My dog was walked home by her.
Future tense
Active voice: Sheena will do the craft work.
Passive voice: Craft work will be done by Sheena.
V. Other words such as ¨with¨ or ¨to¨ may also be used instead of the
word ¨by¨ depending upon the subject of the sentence.
Examples:
1. I know him.
He is known to me.
2. Water fills a tub.
A tub is filled with water.
VI. Sometimes you may completely omit the subject from the passive
voice if the idea you are trying to convey is clear. You just have to
take a judgement call for that. For example:
Active voice: Distance is measured in kilometers.
Passive voice: Kilometres is a measurement unit for distance.

F. Developing Mastery (Leads to Let’s Get the Ball Rolling! (8 mins)

2. Two police officers led the procession.
3. The letter was sent by the mailman.
4. The noise outside disturbed the students.
