CHAPTER I.

THE LAWYER AND SOCIETY

CANON 1 - A LAWYER SHALL UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION, OBEY THE LAWS OF THE LAND AND PROMOTE
RESPECT FOR LAW OF AND LEGAL PROCESSES.
The Court stressed:
The lawyer's primary duty as enunciated in the Attorney's Oath is to uphold the Constitution, obey the
laws of the land, and promote respect for law and legal processes. That duty in its irreducible minimum
entails obedience to the legal orders of the courts.

And for any violation of this oath, a lawyer may be suspended or disbarred by the Supreme Court (Rule 138,
Section 27, Revised Rule of Court).

All of these underscore the role of a the lawyer as the vanguard of justice.

The transgression of any provision of law by a lawyer is a repulsive and reprehensible act which the court will not
countenance.
