ASSIGNMENT

UNIT-II

CLASS-VIM

NAME:SEC.
DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL, FARIDABAD
English Assignment — 2019-20, Semester I, Unit II
Class - VIII
Section A
A.1 Read the following poem carefully :
Travelling in an aeroplane can be an enriching experience. From the skies above, we not
only get a panoramic view of the land but also an insight into human behaviour...

When the jet sprang into the sky,

it was clear why the city
had developed the way it had,.—
seeing it Scaled1 six inches to the mile.
There seemed an inevitability2
about what on ground had looked haphazard3,
unplanned and without style
when the jet sprang into the sky.

When the jet reached ten thousand feet,

it was clear why the country
had cities where rivers ran
and why the valleys were populated.
The logic4 of geography—
that land and water attracted man—
was clearly delineated5
when the jet reached ten thousand feet.

When the jet rose six miles high,

it was clear that the earth was round
and that it had more sea than land.
But it was difficult to understand
that the men on the earth found
causes to hate each other, to build
walls across cities and to kill.
From that height, it was not clear why.

Zulfikar Ghose

A.2 Read the passage and answer the questions the follow it :

ON TOP OF THE WORLD

What is common among river rafting, mountaineering, trekking and paragliding? All of them are
physically daunting activities that- offer unusual and exciting experiences. They are all
adventure sports.

Mountaineering is one of the most difficult adventure sports. It is the sport of climbing
mountains. Only bravehearts will think of going to unknown territories and conquering
mountains. Yet there is no dearth of mountaineers in the world. They climb small and big
mountains as a sporting activity. However, climbing Mt Everest, the highest mountain in the
world, is the ultimate dream of any mountaineer.

Many mountaineers had tried their luck at the conquest of this mighty mountain before. In 1924,
mountaineers Sandy Irvine and George Mallory made an unsuccessful attempt at the cost of
their lives. The glory of having successfully completed the Everest expedition first goes to Sir
Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and SherpaTenzing Norgay of Nepal. They conquered Mt
Everest in 1953 - the first genuine ascent. Ever since the first conquest, many mountaineers
have successfully met the challenge of this peak.

In 2006, another New Zealander named Mark Inglis performed an absolutely incredible feat. He
became the first double amputee to reach the summit of Mt Everest. After 40 rough days of
climbing in April-May 2006, 47-year-old Inglis made his final push for top from Camp 4 - 450
metres from the summit - in perfect weather on 15 May. An astounding deed indeed! He was
standing on artificial legs on top of the world, literally. There stood the legless mountaineer,
happy, enjoying his triumph, gazing on all below him, thereby sending out an inspiring message
to others with disabilities that their ambitions should never be limited.
During the punishing climb his prosthetic legs had not caused any problems. When one artificial
leg had broken earlier during the climb, Inglis described it as 'a minor hiccup'. He was carrying
a spare set of legs as well as equipment to make necessary repairs in case anything went
wrong. In 1982, he and fellow climber Phil Doole were trapped in an ice cave for fourteen days
on Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest peak. Inglis managed to keep his head and did not panic
but both of them suffered frost bite and they had to have both legs amputated below the knee.

Since 2006, Inglis has taken on a number of challenging roles and succeeded - ranging from
legless ski guide to research scientist, after earning a degreein Human Biochemistry. He aiSO
won a silver medal in cycling at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000.
Before leaving on his expedition to Mt Everest, Inglis said that the fact that he had lost both
legs, and that no one has ever scaled the world's highest peak with two artificial legs was of
secondary importance. He said with conviction, 'I'm not doing this to be the first double
amputee - if I am, then it is the icing on the cake - but it's much more than that. I've been
climbing most of my life and Everest is the achievement really. It gives you the knowledge of
empowerment to do other things.' Inglis, who kept a website diary of his climb, said that the
expedition was also an effort to raise money for a Cambodian centre that provides
rehabilitation for landmine amputees, polio victims and other disabled people.

A.3 This simplified excerpt from The Diary of Samuel Pepys tells about the Great Fire of
London which burned down large parts of the city in 1666.

Some of our maids were sitting up late last night to get things ready for our feast the next day.
Our maid, Jane, woke us up about three in the morning to tell us of a great fire they saw in
the city. So I rose, and went to the window. Being unused to such fires as followed, I thought
it far off, and so went to bed again. By and by Jane came and told me that above 300 houses
had been burned down by the fire, and that it was then burning down all Fish Street, by London
Bridge. So I made myself ready and walked to the Tower; and there got up on one of the high
places, and saw that the houses at the end of the bridge were all on fire.

I went down, worried, to the Lieutenant of the Tower, who told me that it began that morning
in the King's baker's house in~Pudding Lane, and that it had burned St Magnus's Cfiurch and
most part of Fish Street already. So I rode down to the waterside, and there saw everybody
3
struggling to remove their goods, and flinging them into the river. Poor people stayed in their
houses till the fire touched them, and then ran into boats, or clambered from one pair of stairs
by the waterside to another. The pigeons too wouldn't leave their houses, but hovered about
the windows and balconies, till some of them burned their wings and fell down.

In an hour, I had seen the fire rage every way, and nobody had tried to quench it. I went next
to Whitehall (with a gentleman, who wanted to see the fire in my boat). From there, I went up
to the King's room in the Chapel, where the people surrounded me. They were very dismayed
by my account. I was called to see the King/and told him and the Duke of York that unless
His Majesty ordered the houses to be pulled down, nothing could stop the fire. They seemed
very worried, and the King commanded me to go to the Lord Mayor, and ask him to spare no
houses.' .. . •••••..•/•;."• ft ft'ftftftv. ;-.-•:•:•^ft ft .ft ft ft. '-ft'.-- - •:. ftft. -ft/ft ftftft ft. 'ft- . ft

I hurried to St Paul's. Everyone was laden with goods to save'and here and there, sick people
were being carried away in beds. When I met the Lord Mayor in Cannon Street and gave him
the King's message, he cried, 'Lord, what can I do? I am spent. People will not obey me. I have
been pulling down houses, but the fire overtakes us faster than we can do it.'.

A3.1 a. Who informed the narrator about the fire? What information did she provide him
gradually?

b. Where did the narrator move out and whom did he meet? What was he told about
the source of the fire and the damage it had done?

c. What did the narrator observe at the waterside?

d. How did the'poor people and the pigeons'behave in the emergency?

e. Make a list of the words that suggest the panic, fear and efforts of the people to
save others and themselves.

FRICTION
Static Friction is the opposing force which comes into play during the tendency of a body to
move on another body. It is a self adjusting force and is equal to the applied force.

It can adjust its value between 0 and Fmax

Thatis 0<F<Fmax

where F is the friction force and Fmaxis maximum (limiting) value of friction force.

Kinetic friction is the opposing force which comes into play during the motion of abody on another
body. It is of two types :

i. Sliding friction

ii. Rolling friction

Normal reaction (R) is equal to the force with which the two bodies are pressed against each
other.

The ratio of limiting friction (F,) and the normal reaction (R) is called coefficient of limiting friction

p is a dimensionless constant. It depends on the nature of the surfaces in contact. The ratio of the
kinetic friction (Fk) and normal reaction (R) is called coefficient of kinetic friction (pkj. That is

Fk
^k=-^-. (pk<Fi)

Questions:.

Q.1 What happens to the coefficient of friction, when the normal reaction is halved?

POLLUTION
Pollution is the presence of a substance in the environment which has harmful or poisonous effects.

Water Pollution
It means one or more substances that have built up in water to such an extent that they cause problems
for animals or people by contaminating the water.

How to Make a Water Filter

Materials Required:

1.Plastic bottle with a cap

2.Craft knife

3.Hammer and nail

4.Coffee filter

5.Large cup or mug (Either one works)

6.Activated charcoal

7.Sand

8.Gravel

9.Container to collect the water (jar, cup, mug, etc.)

51
PROCEDURE
1.Use a craft knife to cut the bottom inch (2.54 centimetres) of the plastic bottle.
2.Use a hammer and nail to punch a hole in the cap. The hole will help slow down the flow of water
and make the filter more effective.

3.Put the coffee filter over the mouth of the bottle and tighten the cap over it. The coffee filter will
keep the activated charcoal inside the bottle and keep it from falling out. The cap will hold the
coffee filter in place.

4.Put the bottle cap-side-down into a mug or cup. This will help keep the bottle steady while you fill
.it.. .... ....... ft ..... ... .. .. . ...,. . .-.•... - >'. . .'... . . ....-. . : .

5.Fill the bottom third of the bottle with activated charcoal. If the charcoal comes in large pieces,
you will need to break them down into smaller pieces.

6.Fill the middle of bottle with sand. You can use any type of sand you want. Try to make the sand
layer as thick as the charcoal layer.

Try using two types of sand: a fine grained sand and a coarse grained sand. The finer sand will go
first, on top of the charcoal. The coarse grained sand will go next, on top of the fine-grained
sand. This will create more layers for the water to pass through, and help make it cleaner.

7.Fill the rest of the bottle with a gravel. Leave an inch (2.54 centimeters) or so of empty space
between the gravel and the cut part of the bottle. Do not fill the bottle all the way with gravel, or the
water may spill over if it does not drain fast enough.

Try using two types of gravel: a fine grained gravel and a chunky gravel. The fine grained gravel
will go first, on top of the sand. The chunky gravel will go next, on top of the fine gravel.

8.Choose a jar to catch the filtered water. Pour water into the filter. Wait for the water to flow into the
jar. Pour the water back through the filter if it is not clear. Boil the water for at least one minute to
make it safe to drink.

carbonate CuCO3.Cu(OH)2.

c.Surface of silver metal gets tarnished (dull) by action of sulphur compounds (H2S, SO2)
from atmosphere to develop a black layer of silver sulphide.

d.Noble metals such as gold, platinum which are less reactive do not corrode.

i. Rusting can be prevented by painting, greasing and oiling, galvanization, electroplating

with tin, chromium and nickel, alloying (stainless steel).

APTITUDE ENHANCEMENT
A biofertilizer is a substance containing microorganisms that promote plant growth by increasing the soil
fertility. Biofertilizers add nutrients to the soil through the natural processes of nitrogen fixation, solubilizing
phosphorus, and stimulating the synthesis of growth-promoting substances.

Sources of biofertilisers :
•The Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of leguminous plants can fix atmospheric nitrogen into
organic forms.

•Other free-living bacteria such as Azospirillum and Azotobacter can fix atmospheric nitrogen in the
soil. .

•Fungi also form symbiotic association with the roots of plants. For example: Mycorrhizae absorbs
phosphorus from soil and passes it to the plant.

•Blue green algae such as Anabaena, Nostoc and Oscillatoria have been traditionally used as
biofertilizers.

Advantages of biofertizers:

1.Biofertilizers reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

2.. They do not contain any chemicals which are harmful to the living soil.

3.They are cost effective and environment friendly.

4.They increase the crop yields by 10 - 25 %.

Answer the following questions:

1.Name any two natural processes by which biofertilizers add nutrients to the soil.

2.Mention any two advantages of using biofertilizers.

3.Give reason: Mycorrhizae is used as a biofertilizer.

4.Give example of any one free living bacteria and one cyanobacteria which are used as
biofertilizers.

64
Experiential Learning
Students would visit the school garden to know more about the following : •
Topic : Protection of Crops from weeds.

•In a field, several undesirable plants grow along with the main crop plant. Such undesirable
plants are called weeds.

•Some of the commonly found weeds in a field include plants like wild oat, Chenopodium.
Parthenium. Amaranthus and wild grass.
•The removal of unwanted plants (weeds) from the fields in which crop plants are grown, is
called Weeding.

•ft Weeding is necessary since weeds compete with the crop plants for water/nutrients, Space,
air and light. Thus, they affect the growth of the crop.
•Some weeds intervene even in harvesting and may be poisonous for animals and human
beings.

•The best time for removal of weeds is before they produce flowers & seeds.

Method of Weed Removal

I.Manual Weeding : The manual removal

includes physical removal of weeds by
uprooting or cutting them close to the ground
from time to time.(a) Harrow(b) Trowel (khurpa)

Disadvantages of Manual Weeding :Tools used for physical removal of weeds.

a.Time consuming

b.May lead to accidental removal of crop plants.

c.Implements need proper care as they are made of iron, which is corrosive in nature.

II.Weedicides:

•Weedicides are chemicals that destroy weeds without affecting the crop.

•Some of the" commonly used weedicides

include 2,4-D (2,4-Dichlorophenoxy acetic
acid), MCPA (2-Methyl-4-chloro-1-Phenoxy
acetic acid), Dalapon, Metachlor, etc.

•The weedicides are diluted with water and

sprayed in the fields with a sprayer.

•Weedicides kill the weeds but at the same

time, accumulate on the leaf surface of the
crop. Hence, it is advised to wash the
Spmytng wax/taw
vegetables and fruits before they are
consumed.

Spraying of weedicides may affect the health of farmer. So they should use these
chemicals very carefully. They should cover their nose and mouth while spraying
weedicides.

III. Biological method : Insects or some other organisms that consume and specifically destroy
the weed plants are introduced in the crop fields. This is called Biological control of weeds.
Eg. Biological control of prickly pear cactus (opuntia) by using cochineal insects.

Questions :
i. Imagine you are an advisor to the department of Agricultural practices. What would you
advise the farmers for weeding their fields -chemical weedicides or biological control of
weeds? Give reason for your answer.
