33Nature of work

34The internship started with assigning work to the interns assembled. I was given choices of
35the various projects active then and given the duration of each project. I had taken serious
36seeking thought of choosing a project that utilizes my potential and to be able to understand
37the prevailing situation of the state better. After through consideration, I decided to join the
38EUREKA Toy Joy project under the guidance and supervision of Mrs Pragathi Madam
39and Mrs Punitha Madam, the person responsible for the project and an active member.

40The project required me to Talk to different pre schools and people in and around
41Tamilnadu to request and seek their help by getting old and used toys from them and
42distributing them to young children in the leeward sections of the society mainly focusing
43on the district of Ramanathapuram (colloquially know as Ramnad), with a high literacy rate
44as per literature. The actual scenario on the other hand is painful to bear with.

45It was seen that a young child was playing with a live rat as toy by pulling its tail after seeing
46this our organisation became so sad and decided to start their project from this small village
47in Ramanathapuram.when asked about this the villagers cooly told that they have been
48playing like the same in their childhood.after hearing all this all our eyes were filled with
49tears and our heart fell so sorry for it.

50 Aid India has taken it upon themselves to help the village by collecting toys from different
51sources and distributing it to different villages in and around Tamilnadu. They do so until the
52district becomes capable of sustaining on its own and can be relied upon its development.
53This is the ultimate goal that it dreams to achieve. After joining the task I immediately
54started, which is getting to the work right away.

55

56BENEFICIARIES

57As mentioned above, the service is done keeping in mind the scenario of the villages and
58young children in that district of Ramnad as the village does not have the sufficient financial
59and economical ability to support the needs of young children. This situation is mostly
1
60predominant in backward section of the society within that district because it lacks the
61resources and hence could not meet the basic needs of young children.
62The main objective of Aid India is to push the standards higher by educating the children and
63the Villagers with the willingness to learn and also making them capable and self reliant in
64the process. They will also be able to pass on their knowledge and continue our work.

65Day-Wise break Up

66Day - 1 and Day-2: The day I joined the NGO, which was a start and required learning
67through various levels. The main importance task was to understand the primary situation in
68the Ramnathapuram districts and then decide the essential tools and steps required to educate
69them and ways of helping them was dicussed with our project coordinator. Most part of the
70day until lunch was spent on deciding the project and gaining insight on the situation.

71It was advised to me that it would be preferred to set a theme on the syllabus in making to be
72set into a village. This was decided keeping in mind the relevance to their environment .
73Since the theme was decided upon, there was no more waiting and the work was started.

74The work required me to make a poster for attracting people to help for our toy project. I
75started gathering some pictures and made a word document on the very same. The theme was
76kept in mind every time I took a picture from the internet. I also took it upon myself to put in
77some examples to illustrate the nature of the picture. The document was prepared and was
78scrutinized by Mrs Pragathi madam my mentor and incharge, who suggested some changes
79which were taken care of. My first steps towards becoming a Poster Designer were laid.

80Day-2 and Day-3: Once the work with postor making was completed, I was excited to start
81another and was asked if I could do a couple of questions grouped in why, where, when, who
82formats. I started at once and set the theme to represent a village. This was quite a challenge
83since I haven’t had a visual experience. To better understand the scenario and increase the
84standards of imagination I had to prepare, I went to Ms Pragathi, intern coordinator at Aid
85India, who gave me stimulating scenarios helping me better prepare for the scenario. After
86several insights I made up my mind to start working, made several sentences, went blank for
87sometime, got ideas, went blank. This went on an on until I completed the task. This had me
88test my imagination and at the same time improve my vocabulary and understand the
89situation of a district that I had never visited.

90Day-4 and Day-5: Staying in the same better mood I was given a job of contacting different
91pre schools, gated communities and many toy shops in and around Chennai and diifrnt places
2
92in tamilnadu by my project manager Pragati madam.so I started to think the ways in which I
93could contact different people and pre schools.so I started googling and collected many
94details about pre schools in different areas in and around Chennai and contacted justdial and
95got details of many toy shops and gated communities and at the end of 2 days around 80
96preschools and around 30 gated communities and around 30 toy shops details were collected
97and details were saved in a excel filesheet.

98Day-5 and Day-6: After these details were collected I was asked to contact all those pre
99schools and was thought how to speak to all authorities by my project head ,and I was asked
100to call personally to alland seek their help.i felt very happy .after contacting the remarks was
101updated to my project head. Many pre schools attended the calls and were glad to help.some
102preschools refused.andwhen toyshops were contacted they were ready to give a bulk of toys
103for a huge discount.most of the gated communities didn’t even respect us and treated us as
104some liers, which we found a little hard to digest. But,Particularly hamleys helped us in a
105huge way by offering us some 250 new toys for nearly 3000 rupees which we found quite
106helpful.

107Day-6 and Day-7:After that my project head asked me to rearrange the list based on the
108response given by preschools,.gated communities and toyshops.after rearranging I and some
109of my friends directly visited some preschools and toy shops who asked us to come and
110collect the old and unused toys in their school. And toys were collected and were taken to our
111organisation.

112Day-7 to Day-10:after this my Project head asked me suggest some ideas for improving our
113toy joy project.so we some interns discussed about the matter about 2 hours and we suggested
114an idea of keeping some boxes with different places of the city and we discussed many ideas
115and our project head told the drawbacks in each of it and finally accepted the one of keeping
116boxes in different placesof city.and in one way it was somewhat successful and we were able
117collect some 100-120 toys by this process.

118Day-11 and Day-12: Most of the work was completer except for the final task. Before that
119though we did some data entry for the institute. The work was about entering
120data(credentials) of the students and their families along with their Education qualification.
121This was a part of a survey conducted by Aid India in certain villages where they were
122actively conducting programs to increase the number of English speaking elites(Walk n’ Talk
123Programme). The most astonishing
3 part of this data entry though is that I came across many
124students, who had completed schooling(10th grade or 12th Grade) , were able to write phrases
125in English. This is what Aid India is capable of, finding problems and achieving at attaining
126the best solution.
127The next day though was the most crucial day. I arrived in the hall along with Madam Priya
128(Incharge of the Walk and Talk Programme). Ma’am was already standing there with a poem
129written on the board and it was time to start the task. We were standing along with them to
130recite the poem. The objective of this is to teach meaning of the poem and sing along,
131eventually learning the meaning in a more intuitive manner. Our task was simple - recite the
132poem and dace along with it. This would make them observe and learn.

133 Finally on the last day we all consolidated all the toys and packed it along with pragati
134madam and priya maam and we had send it to ramnad for distributing it in that backward
135class villages to the ground staffs of aid india in ramnad.

162Learning from the internship

163This internship was the first time I had got to work away from home. So that’s a first. Many
164things eventually followed and everyday was full of problems and had required through
165solving. My task required me to make a helpul contribution to the backward class
166peoplewhich was intensive but not impossible. I understood the nature and working of an
167NGO, what it does, how it benefits the society and brings up the life of many families, how it
168sustains and what are its resources, to what extent it must go to inculcate the necessary
169knowledge of these rural parts of the state NGOs are an integral part of the /country to Us.

170From this internship I also got the opportunity to know about the situation of a village and the
171residents there, what they lack and how NGOs play their role to tackle their problems. NGOs
172work or rather strive very hard to make the world a better place. We can do little by helping
173them in some manner. I only tried in doing my part and would say to my heart that I did with
174dedication. I also had learned more about many prospects of the working environment and
175got to now people with similar ideologies.

176Meeting such people told me what I was missing being struck with the buzzing world. There
177are problems everywhere with everyone, but not everyone has the resources to bring up the
178solutions. So those with can help those without. This is the motto that I learned and will
179remember. One could only build buildings with bricks similarly this small steps will lead into
180a more educating and philanthropic future.
181I once again thank sastra and aid india for this wonderful opportunity.
