Chinese Joss Paper

Specific Purpose: I will inform my audience about the Chinese joss paper.

Thesis Statement: Despite the fact that joss paper is commonly used for Chinese ancestral
worship, it can also be used to create other crafts such as currency, houses and more.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Attention Getter: Do you know something about the Chinese joss paper in my
culture?
1.2 Reveal Topic: Some of you are familiar with this because some of you are Chinese.
Some of you are just wanted to study Chinese culture because you are curious about
our culture but those who don’t know about the Chinese joss paper, I will be telling
you about it.
1.3 Credibility Statement: I am a pure Chinese person and I always go to temples during
the beginning of Chinese new year to pray and to send offerings to my Chinese
ancestors.
1.4 Relevancy Statement: In my culture, Chinese joss paper also known as “ghost
money” are sheets of paper or papercrafts made into burnt offerings common in
Chinese ancestral worship. It is are also burned or buried at the temples,
crematoriums, funerals, and gravesites.
1.5 Thesis Statement: Despite the fact that joss paper is commonly used for Chinese
ancestral worship, it can also be used to create other crafts such as currency, houses
and more.

TRANSITION: Let us discuss the three main points of Chinese joss paper. First I will be telling
you about how the chinese joss paper was made.

2.0 Origin of Chinese joss paper

2.1 Joss paper is traditionally made from coarse bamboo paper or rice paper is also
commonly used.
2.2 According to archaeologists, the paper offerings began about 1000 BC. The Taoist
began to make chinese joss paper to represent the emperor’s servants in the
afterlife.
2.3 There are three main types of spirit money:
2.3.1 Cash monies (also known as copper) are given to newly deceased spirits
and to spirits of the unknown.
2.3.2 Silver spirit money (yin) is given to ancestral spirits as well as spirits of
local goddesses.
2.3.3 Gold spirit money (jin) is given to the deceased and higher gods such as
the Jade Emperor of China.

TRANSITION: The next thing that I will discuss is the purpose of Chinese joss paper

3.0 Purpose of Chinese joss paper

3.1 It is often used for venerating those departed but has also been known to be used
for other purposes such as a gift from a groom's family to the bride's ancestors.
3.2 Spirit money has been said to have been given for the purpose of their deceased
family members to have all they will need or want in the afterlife.
3.3 The burning of spirit money enables the ancestor to purchase luxuries and
necessities needed for a comfortable afterlife.

TRANSITION: Next I will discuss the varieties of chinese joss paper

4.0 More varieties of Chinese joss paper

4.1 Joss paper can be decorated using a square of gold or silver foil to represent the
seals, stamps, pieces of contrasting paper, engraved designs or etc.
4.2 Joss paper can be created into many things such as houses, clothes, cars, toiletries,
electronics, and servants so that if you burn them, it will be sent to heaven and they
will have a comfortable afterlife.

TRANSITION: Now I will conclude my speech about this topic.

5.0 Conclusion:

I. Summary Statement: These are the things that are the most important parts that
we should focus on the Chinese joss paper. First is the origin of Chinese joss paper,
second is the purpose of Chinese joss paper and the third is the varieties of Chinese
joss paper.
II. Memorable Closing Statement: I am addressing to you, as a Chinese person, that
burning Chinese joss paper is important to our culture. It can help us remember our
deceased family members. We believed in blessings that of our Chinese ancestors
gave us so we are returning their favor to us. That is all that I will be talking about.
