CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATRURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough

and in-depthsearch done by the researchers. This will also present the synthesis

of the art and lastly the definition of terms for better comprehension of the study.

Related Literature

According to Official Gazette (2012), Senior High School is two years

ofspecialized upper secondary education; students may choose a specialization

based onaptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will

define thecontent of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. SHS

subjects fall undereither the Core Curriculum or specific Tracks.

McFadden (2015) stated that parents and peers could also influence the

students in choosing a career. According to higher education consultant Noel

Levitz, although kids tend to deny the fact that their parents affect their decisions,

their parent’s opinions matter. A study by ACSD points out those students may

be affected by their peers, but the relationship is correlational. Researchers

haven’t determined whether like-minded students tend to become friends or if

friendship affects career choices.

In like manner with the study ofLa (2009) on factors influencing the

educational and career choices of senior high school students revealed that

parents supports, school structure, gender and grade point average has

educational and career choice

Guido (2013) academic performance represents how well a student is

achieving tasks and studies. This study show factors associated that affects

academic performance of students such as; course, study habit, learning style,

motivation, professor, and social factors. Based on the investigation of 42

astronomy students, this study analyses and evaluates the factors affecting

academic performance of astronomy technology students and the relationship of

their general weighted average to the rated factors. It shows that there are

significant differences in the factors affecting academic performance. There is a

marked negative relationship between the general weighted average and the

factors affecting academic performance. It appears that students are optimistic in

their academic performance, confident with their study habits, assertive with their

learning styles, emphatic about their motivation, expresses more compassion in

their studies compared to their social life, and their professors have shown

professional, ethical and moral attitudes. The department should continue

reinforcing students' reasoning and thinking skills especially if it is related to

astronomy.

Dietrich and Kracke (2009) reported “if adolescents perceive their parents

as putting through their own wishes for child’s future career rather than

collaborating with the child in preparing for a career this may be interpreted as

disinterest in the child’s plan. Those who are negatively influenced by their

parents are less likely to choose the same career field of their parents, which is

partially a critical issue of interest in this study

According to Pascual (2014), students’ first consideration in choosing

career path to pursue is the availability of work after college.

Koech and his colleagues (2016) concluded that the students’ social

interactions with teachers, parents, and peers affect the students’ career choice.

According to Alexander (2010), the three most important motivators of

students in choosing a career are good salary, stable job, and low stress.

Pummel, Harwood and Lavallee (2009) report that the external influences

that help to shape an individual’s career choice are also influenced by significant

others through social support from peers. People around contribute a lot in one’s

decision-making.Friends may influence an individual choice of career. Individual

interest may be affected by peers for the reason that one wants to be with them

in fulfilling dreams or a certain career. Classmates also play an important role in

the formation of student’s achievement, related beliefs and values, even if these

classmates do not always correspond with the peer group of leisure-time friends.

Frenzel, Goets, Pekrun & Watt, 2010). Id n a cross-sectional study relating

aspects of classroom climate to student enjoyment, Frenzel, Pekrun and Goetz

(2007) reported that class aggregated student perceptions of classroom values

were significantly and positively related to students’ enjoyment. Developments of

student’s interest were really affected by their peers and classmates.

As a sign of respect for the parents and culture of Filipinos, parents or the

elderly are being consulted first by their children becaue primarily they will the

one to provide the financial support to enter in college. (Laguador, 2013)

According to Sonsona (2012) self concept was also found significant on

the choice of specialization of students.

Using a developmental contextual framework Ma and Yeh (2010) studied

the educational and career plans of 265 Chinese immigrant youth. They explored

how perceived environmental barriers, fluency in English, parental support for

careerrelated variables and parents’ value on achievement predicts career and

educational plans and expectations. Analysis of data revealed that English

language fluency and parental support was related to higher career aspirations

while perceived educational barriers led to negative attitudes.

A mixed methods study surveyed the career choices and career shifts of

youth in Mumbai and also influences on their career choices as perceived by

youth and their satisfaction with their career. In the 68 youth that they surveyed,

they found career choices to be specific for class and gender. The ratings of the

importance of influence were highest for self, followed by family and least

influence was seen by career guidance services. The combination of the

importance of self and family was high in comparison to only self individually

(Bakshi et al., 2012).

Related Studies

The SHS program is relatively new in the Philippines, with the first year

enrollees (grade 11) started June 2016. It leads to surge of demand for qualified

teachers in specialized areas. DepEd law requires that teachers in the basic

education which include SHS must be licensed, teachers. Since specialized

courses such as ICT, S&T and engineering are rare majors in education degrees,

the department was unable to fill it up as required. This forced DepEd to allow

non-licensed teachers to handle specialized classes and was given five years to

get the license. In the tech-voc track, only NC II holders were allowed to teach,

some of them are not degree holders. However, they too are required to acquire

a license to teach within five years as well. (DepEd, 2016)

The senior SHS curriculum is an entry point to college/university life or

business and industry, the later seen as the lesser of the two regarding prestige

(Bidwell, 2014, Peano et.al. 2008). In the Philippines for example, more students

would prefer going into the academic track than any other track. In a study

conducted, about half chooses academic tracks while tech-voc courses are

selected only by about 3% of their prospective students (Lagajino et.al, 2015).

Based on enrolment data from DepEd, 60.6% of Philippine senior high school

enrolees went to academic track while around 39% went to the tech-voc track. In

Japan, about 73% choose academic track compared to 24% going to tech-voc.

track.

Some researchers studied factors that may affect the career decision

making specific to the field of study. A study by Aguado and co-workers (2015)

showed that students’ personal choice with parental support affects the level of

interest in pursuing maritime program

Rani, Gupta, and Sharma (2013) studied the relationship between career

maturity and decision status, academic performance, and locus of control using

an expost factor 2X2 factorial design. The sample consisted of 600 students

studying in XI standard. Statistical analysis using t-tests and analysis of variance

revealed that career maturity was significantly higher in students who are

decided about their careers, high academic performers, and participants with an

internal locus of control. However, no interaction effects were seen. This study

brings out the links between individual factors and career maturity

Syntheis

In summary, the results of this study suggest that academically talented

students' decisions regarding courses to take in extra-educational settings are

complex, multiply determined and vary depending upon the choices involved.

Interests, ability, previous educational experiences and parental attitudes were all

implicated as important contributing factors. One of the most compelling and

consistent findings of this study was the influence of parental attitudes about the

the strand that the students will choose.
