Overview

Students are engaged in music making using both body percussion and instruments they choose to create
sounds familiar to them in everyday life.

Rationale

Students explore differences between body percussion and instruments, as well as how to create music
using common sounds and experiences around them.

● I can use my voice and body percussion to create different sounds

● Variety of percussion instruments

Detailed Process

Time Required
1 min 1) Welcome Back Song

2 min 2) Ask what some differences students think are between using body percussion or
voice, and instruments

50 sec 3) Introduce the book

3 min 4) Read pages that are marked off, and ask students what they think the weather
sounds like, using their own body and mouths
a) Cold white snow
b) Stormy sky
c) Long wet street
d) Wind and the rain

2 min 5) Split students into 4 groups, and assign them a sound, and ask them to find
instruments in the closet with that sound

2 min 6) Read the book again, and have students make sounds of the weather with the
instruments they chose.
1 - 3 min 7) Ask students
a) Do you think it was easier to use the instruments or the body percussion?
Why?
b) What were some differences between the instruments and the body
percussion?
c) What else did you learn about instruments and body percussion?

1 min 8) Goodbye Song

Assessments

- Watch student’s ability to discuss differences between body percussion and


instruments
- Note how individual students use their voice to create different weather sounds
- Note how individual students are able to relate sound to weather

Extensions:

Adaptations

Size -Put book on projector if the font is too small

Color -color code different weather using highlighter or post it notes

Pacing -Ask students more questions to keep engaged, and slow pace down
-Have students create different weather sounds using given instruments, instead of picking
them
