1
Dear Parent/Guardian:

As the 2019-2020 school year is underway, I would like to welcome you and your child
into my Family and Consumer Sciences class at Dag Hammarskjold Middle School. It is my
pleasure to have your child in my class and I am very excited to help them learn and grow this
Trimester.

In the past, Family and Consumer Sciences has had the name of Home Economics or
"Home Ec". "Home Ec" was a class that focused on cooking and sewing. However, our program
has evolved. Family and Consumer Sciences is divided into twelve areas: Career, Community,
and Family Connections, Consumer Science and Family Resource Management, Interpersonal
Relationships, Leadership, Individual and Family Development, Education and Family-
Community Services, Nutrition and Wellness, Hospitality/ Food Science/ Dietetics/ Food
Production and Services, Child Development, Textiles and Design, and Textile, Apparel, Housing,
Interiors, and Related Careers.

Our class focuses entirely on Entrepreneurship and Foods. Also, with each topic that we
cover, students will be learning about various careers associated with each focus area.

As your child enters this class, it would be extremely helpful to have your cooperation in
reinforcing the guidelines outlined in this packet. I ask that you please take time to review the
points listed below and all the enclosed guidelines with your child.

It is extremely important that after reviewing this handbook, your child should keep this
copy in his/her Family and Consumer Sciences folder for future reference.

Also, please view our classroom website- http://gurgafacs.weebly.com. This website

contains announcements, homework assignments, various resources for the class, pictures
from various activities we do in class, and so much more! Additionally, you can follow our class
on Facebook and YouTube ("Miss Gurga"), Twitter (@GurgaFCS), and Instagram (GurgaFCS).

With your help, we can work together to make your child's time in this class and school
year a valuable and rewarding experience. I look forward to meeting you at Open House!

If you have any further questions or concerns, you can contact me by using the "For
Parents/Guardians: Contact Miss Gurga" tab or email me at ggurga@wallingfordschools.org.

Sincerely,

Miss Gurga
Family and Consumer Sciences

Policies and Procedures
In order to be successful in this class, you will need:

• Five Star 1” Flex Notebook (You can find it at Target, Walmart, or

Amazon)
• Pen or Pencil

These items are required daily for class and you will be able to store it
in your class bin that I have in my room. Failure to have all of the above
will result in a HOW grade of 1 until policy is fulfilled

• Absence from Class: Class is 1 letter day, 1 Trimester out of the

year. Work missed due to an absence MUST be made up in a
reasonable time, especially because our class is so hands-on. It is
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to come to me to find out what you
missed, what you have to make up, and schedule a time to make
up the work. You are more than welcome to make up work during
scheduled Enrichment times or during after school hours but
must tell me in order to get a pass or to schedule an after-school
time.

• Assessments:
o Assessments will be given during the course in graded and
non-graded form. Before we begin the course, you will be
given a non-graded assessment in order for me to know
what you know and don't know about sewing. At the end of
the course, a graded assessment will be given. All
assessments are to be written in any color ink or pencil,
EXCEPT RED. Everyone is expected to be in class for the test
unless ABSENT from school for that day. If you are ABSENT
on the test day, it is your responsibility to schedule a time
with me to make up your test.
3
o Quizzes are announced or unannounced. ALWAYS BE
PREPARED! If you do not show up to class on the day of the quiz
due to an absence, it is your responsibility to make up the quiz
as soon as you return to school.

o Projects needed to be completed in a timely manner. Any

projects not completed by their due date or with permission for
an extension, will receive a grade of 50 or lower.

• Cheating on Assessments
• If a student is found to be cheating or have cheated
on an assessment, the student will get an automatic
grade of 0.
• The student will then get an alternate assignment to
complete and will be required to do a self-reflection
essay.

• Cell Phones: Per the Wallingford Public Schools policy, there are to
be no electronic devices (iPods, Cell Phones, etc) used during class
unless used for academic purposes. I fully understand that there are
times when you are coming from the cafeteria where you are able
to use your phone, however, in my room, or any
classroom/bathroom/locker room, there are to be no devices being
used for texting, recording, or picture taking (without permission
from me).

o If you are found to be using these devices inappropriately

during class time, first, a warning will be issued, and then any
time after it will be taken away and a phone call/email will be
made to your parent/guardian. If you refuse to turn it in, you
will be referred to an administrator.

• Chromebooks: Any student to be found misusing the Chromebook

and not doing the assigned/appropriate task will lose Chromebook
privileges and will be referred to an administrator.

4
• Daily Routine: When you get into the classroom, get your folder or
any other supplies needed for the day, a learning target, any "do-
now" given, and be ready to go!

Grading Policy

Classwork/Participation/Attendance 20%
Assessments (tests, quizzes, 80%
projects, labs)
Habits of Work (see page 6) 1-4, graded monthly

TOTAL 100%

• Extra help is ALWAYS available. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK!

o For extra help, you can schedule a time to come during

Enrichment or after school. However, you must tell me to
get a pass or to schedule an after-school time.

• For any information you might have missed in class, homework

assignments, study guides, additional resources, and any other
interesting things, that will be posted on our classroom website
which is - http://gurgafacs.weebly.com. You can also follow me on
Facebook and YouTube ("Miss Gurga"), Twitter (@GurgaFCS), and

Redo/ Retake Policy

Second chance learning is a strategy which provides additional opportunities to

learn and demonstrate what a student knows and can do when assessments
indicate that the essential knowledge or skills have not been demonstrated. The
intent is for students to master the content. Every effort will be made to allow
students the opportunity to
demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and skills of this class.

Second Chance Learning:

• Students will have the opportunity to redo/retake assessments up to two times
within two weeks of the posted grade
• Opportunities to redo/retake assignments are at the teacher’s discretion
• Redo/retake grade will take the place of the original grade unless it is lower (no
averaging of scores)
• In order to identify gaps in learning, students MUST return a completed
redo/retake reflection form
• Alternative practice work or assessments may be given that will cover the same
material but may be in a different format
• Redo and retakes will not be given during the student’s regular class period,
specific retake dates will be determined by the teacher
• Redo and retakes are not meant to be used as a regular practice by a student or as
a substitute for effort
• Students are NOT eligible for a retake until all missing work related to the unit has
been submitted
• All redo and retakes must be completed within two weeks of the grade posting
date

Steps to Retake/Redo an Assessment

• Complete the retake/redo reflection form attached

• Complete/Redo all practice work relating to the assessment or complete alternate
assignments given by the teacher
• Attend a minimum of one tutoring session with your teacher or another teacher
in the content area
• Turn in the redo/retake reflection form and the practice work to the teacher
• Retake the assessment on the designated retake day within two weeks of the
posted grade

** REMINDER: Students can only retake an assessment two (2) times within the two
week retake window. *
