3.1 Production:

The Production department is the broader term in which several sub-departments are working
to make finished tiles to sales in market. Let us discus them one by one;

3.1.1 New Land:

The new land is very crucial department in the process the responsibility of this department is
to store the raw material i.e. clay, fluxes and auxiliaries. These materials are stored separately
according to their type and also according to their tone of color specially the clay as it is
necessary to have same type of color tone to bring homogeneity in the products to make their
physical appearance same from start to end. Also, this department tests the various aspects of
materials such as plasticity, rheology, dry strength, green strength, mechanical strength, water
absorption, heat properties, moisture and thermal expansion.

3.1.2 Body Preparation Department:

In body preparation department the raw materials brought from new land are grinded to make
them fine as much as possible after that these materials are added to ball mills in order to mix
them well and that mixture is even kept for hours in there so that the mixture require to make
tiles body homogenized. So, there is no variation in the color tone of each tile at finishing.
After that magnet treatment is done to bring the impurities like iron out of it, colors are added
if the color tone is not right and then it is dried through spray.

14
3.1.3 CMF:

In CMF all the work is done through PLC machines in which programs are installed to give
instructions to proceed or there are different recipes which are require at different time or
stages as per requirement of what sort of tiles are in the production line. It applies the colors
on body of tiles to make them look homogeneous, there are 32 cellos installed in the CMF
which contain distinct colors in each, every recipe has is special code that code is entered in
the system which then proceed by charging the color powder and spray it on body of tiles.

3.1.4 Press Department:

In press department hydraulic press machines are installed these machines are used to press
the body of tiles to make them air free or to make the particles in the tile body closer to each
other, to bring the tile in shape, to make the tile firm and to equalize the thickness of tiles as
maintain the standard of finished products.

3.1.5 Glaze Preparation Department:

In this department the glaze is prepared by mixing it with varied materials such as powder
and water etc, the duty of this department is to make glaze and maintain its thickness or
viscosity, so it would be smoothly applied on the pressed body of tiles. The glaze is the shiny
liquid material which is applies on tiles to make them shiny and smooth.

3.1.6 Glaze Line Department:

In glaze line department the glaze prepared in glaze preparation department is brought in the
glaze line and poured them into the containers which continuously drop down the glaze with
smooth texture on tiles while these are passing under the convex plates. The glaze is not
directly applied on tiles because it is synchronized process tiles may absorb or the dropper
may put more glazes on tiles. So, working of this department is crucial as it is first application
of shaping tile design if it is not done properly the printing would not be done properly and
the entire process will in vain.

15
3.1.7 Kiln Department:

● It is the stage where the tiles are baked to make all things applied on body of tile to
become part of it forever. The main duties of this department are to bake the tiles for
this purpose they have to maintain the temperature of the kiln according the standards.
For example, while baking the temperature should be maintained up to 1160 Celsius
and while cooling the temperature should be kept at 700-800 Celsius in different
section of the kiln.

3.1.8 Polishing & Squaring Department:

When tiles are baked they are not in quite a position to sell them in the market. These baked
tiles require more working on them first these tiles are polished to make them shiny and
smooth from the surface and second the tiles are finally cut down to make them properly
square shaped. This department gives the tiles finishing touch to make them look attractive.

3.1.9 Sorting Department:

When tiles are finished in the sense of productive applications these tiles are moved towards
sorting section. In sorting department there are number of sorters present who inspect,
identify and mark the tiles according to their grades. These graded tiles are cross verified by
manager and instructed to pack them according to the packing defined for each grade.

3.1.10 Quality Assurance Department:

After All of the departments there is also quality assurance department which in connection to
different schedules check the quality of tiles to make it certain that there is happening no
violation standard parameters. However, this department assures the quality of finished tiles.

3.1.11 Process Quality Control Lab:

The process quality control lab is very active department, it ensures that there should be no
single interruption in the process of manufacturing tiles if any kind of discrepancy is
identified the people of this department fix it and bring it according to parameter f standard
production process

16
3.2 Maintenance:

As we know that the production is fully automated, and all the operations are carried out on
machines, so where machines are running to make products there always will be need of
maintenance to make sure that everything remains operating smoothly. There are two
subdepartments which are as follows;

3.2.1 Electrical & instrumentation Department:

The working of E & I department is enough broad to make it a separate division, the people

to machines, maintenance of power supply, power supply cables, maintenance of
machineries’ electrical requirements and water supply to machines which require water to
control temperature.

4 FUTURE PLANS OF ORGANIZATION

The Master tiles & Ceramic Industries Limited is a growing organization, it falls under the
name of Master Group of industries which already had diversified portfolio from where it is
earning remarkable income due to worth and fame of Master’s name. The successful
organizations always try set goals and then struggle to achieve them; similarly, Master Group
is also developing and aiming to accomplish their future plans. It has following plans in
connection to the future of Master;

4.1 Master Food & Beverages:

It is a new manufacturing unit which Master is establishing in order to make more

diversification in business portfolio and to join the food and beverages industry. This unit
required a huge investment totaling to billions of Pakistani Rupees, all of this amount could
not be possible to invest so, in this project Master took help from National Bank of Pakistan
who has financed this project analyzing the feasibility of this project. The first focus is
towards the beverages section of this project, they had done lots of experiments and invested
a huge amount of money on research and development of recipe to make Cola which will be
sold out under the name of “Master Cola” near in future. All the machinery going to be
installed in future and which had already installed in the plant is fully automated. Another fact
that equipment injected in the plant are imported from various countries and all these are
installed keeping in view the international standards prevailing in food and beverages
industry. After the launch of “Master Cola” the second focus will be on the introduction of
Master Juices and food items which will be marketable in near future as soon as possible.

4.2 Master Tiles & Ceramic Industries Limited:

The tiles manufacturing unit established by Master Group has proved to be the healthy
investment done by Mr. Sheikh Mehmood Iqbal as it has provided them with exceptional
returns even during the periods if economic crisis in Pakistan. Their vision about tiles has
been broader from the scratch and with the time it took that vision toward new heights. If we
see they had already done expansion in the production capacity by establishing Unit-2 known

22
as “Mono Master.” The vision behind this was to become largest manufacturer of tiles in
Pakistan, now the vision had become vaster they want to become number 1 in Asia.

4.2.1 Establishment of Unit-3:

The vision to become number 1 in the region of Asia led them to establish “Unit-3” which is
currently in the stage of completion all the machinery is imported and automated in this plant
and the production capacity of this unit is double as compare to the unit-1 and unit-2. All this
had been done with the collaboration of National Bank of Pakistan, which allow them to open
letter of credit to import all sort of machinery required to complete this project. This plant is
very close to is completion in all aspects and it would become operational or start
manufacturing tiles in the month of August in this year.

4.2.2 Vision 2020:

This not an end to the growth of the company, MTCIL is trying to become more and more
productive the key reason behind this struggle is that no single producer of tiles is able to
fulfill the local demand for tiles in Pakistan. Where MTCIL wants to fulfill it by expanding its
production capacity which is quite a challenging task, so it is vision of Mr. Sheikh Mehmood
Iqbal that their firm should be able to satisfy the needs of local market and as well as tend to
export tiles in abroad as the quality of Master Tiles are not less than the tiles that are
manufactured in countries like Italy and Spain. So, after the completion of unit-3 a target had
been set to install unit-4 and unit-5 which will also consist of latest equipment and machinery
that would be able to produce even more units of tiles and it would be a tremendous increase
in the overall production capacity of Master Tiles. Moreover, it is estimated that MTCIL will
be known as the 16th largest manufacturer of wall, floor and granite tiles in all over the world
under one roof. So, this vision accompanies such huge boundaries that no one can say it
would be an easy task but MTCIL had started working on it and accepted the challenge that
would be become success in the future most probably in 2020.

4.2.3 SAP Implementation:

MTCIL has been using local or in-house made software named as “Master Information
System” and MS-Office to maintain its records and other computerized needs. As we are
living in the era of technology and Master always try to keep up with the trends of world, it is

23
going under SAP implementation and would complete it by the end of this year. This would
be done by the mutual collaboration of Employees and Siemens SAP implementation team.

supportive. The introduction took enough time that it was the end of working hours, so I left
to home. At second day I was encouraged to learn the working process of Accounts
Department. They provide me with real life information and a chance work under their
supervision. Currently MTCIL is using in-house developed application which is known to be

“Master Information System” this application had different heads of vouchers which are name
as under;

• General Journal
• Purchase Expense Journal
• Freight Expense Journal
• Daily Expense Journal
• Inventory Journal

They taught me how to make entries in the journal of purchase and freight expense, it was
quite simple as I have to select the particular journal, add the details of supplier or carriage
service provider, enter the amount from the voucher, add the narration of respective

24
transaction, save it and then move towards next entry. This practice added to data entry or
data recording skill, but it was not an end to learning.
When they found that my speed and accuracy had developed in this they taught me the
complete process of Accounts department specifically the payment side. A person who comes
to receive payment e.g. payment of freight bill slip is checked from the driver, a voucher is
prepared for payment, it consists of date, service provider name, amount of freight charges,
signatures of accounts officer, signatures of driver who is receiving payment and stamp of
being paid then this voucher is moved towards cashier, he rechecks it and make payment.
After that the voucher is kept in the bundle of same kind of vouchers which then collectively
are forwarded to senior accounts officer who makes cross verification that it is being paid
then it is entered in the system and a whole bunch is sent to head office for final verification,
at head office it is cross verified by audit department and final entry is made which further
could not be updated or rectified in case of any kind omission or incorrect recording. All of
the process is daily routine of this department which is repeated same to same just the name
of journals is changed according to the nature of payment.

5.2 Third and Fourth Week:

In first two weeks I have learned all the ins and outs of Finance & Accounts Department, so it
was my keen desire that I should learn more and more things during my stay here, I requested
to Mr. Mashkoor Malik to give me a chance to learn other things. They welcomed my request
and let me work in Procurement Department.

At third week I joined Mr. Amjad Haneef Manager Procurement in his department and begin
to learn that how hard they are working to fulfill the needs of all the other departments with
required things like, machinery, equipment, maintenance tools such as electrical and
mechanical, lubricants used in machinery, raw materials, chemicals, stationary, refreshment
items like biscuits, tea bags etc.

In Procurement very first thing I learned was that it works like marketing department, but the
difference is that marketing is done to find customers and fulfill their needs by providing
products or services and procurement strive to find vendors to make purchase order and your
own need are fulfilled by purchasing required items.

25
However, they developed an interest in the working of Procurement department and
instructed their subordinates to guide me at their best. During my stay here I learned the
whole mechanism of departmental procedures which are as follows; the process of
procurement initiates from PDR called “Purchase Demand Requisition” which is an
documents containing details of items required by any of the organizational department which
is prepared by responsible person and is signed by the head of department, this PDR is
received by Procurement department, the items listed are entered in the categorized labels of
different items as they try to make bulk purchase to reduce the cost minimum level, a
collective inquiry sheet of different kind of required things or items is made and sent to the
relevant vendors, then a quotation is received from the vendors, after that PO called
“Purchase Order” is prepared which is signed by Manger Procurement and General Manager
Procurement and two copies are retained to provide evidence to head office for the purchase
and for departmental record keeping in case of any misconception, charge or cross
verification done by accounts and audit department. Furthermore, if anything purchased is
found to be mismatch with requirement or damages it is returned to the vendor, recorded as
purchase return and the vendor is asked to provide the items with specifically narrated
requirements.

One more thing added in my knowledge here that if we have to make new vendors we not just
look for the shop where the particular item is available, it is a responsibility and challenge for
us to locate multiple vendors selling same item or items so there should be space to bargain
with the supplier or vendor. For this purpose, first market survey is done, multiple vendors are
located, a “Vendor Comparative Analysis Sheet” is made to make comparison and choose the
best one for making order. This comparative analysis is done by considering three majors
factors that are as under;

• Quality
• Cost or Price
• Delivery Time

The vendor which receives high ranking among others in respect of these three factors it is
chosen to make purchase order for satisfying the needs other departments.

5.3 Fifth and Sixth Week:

In last two weeks I remain part of the Human Resources Department; here I was taught the
process of induction of workforce according to the need of any of the department in the
organization and according to the budget planned and approved by CEO in this regard.

In Human Resources Department Mr. Mashkoor Malik were my Mentor and his team
including Mr. Faisal Ejaz and Mr. Mian Ismail was proved to be nourishing in developing my
technical as well personal skills.

In human resources department I was assigned to provide assistance in maintaining personnel

files of employees that are working in MTCIL. It was my responsibility to keep record of
personnel files and make them update as any document regarding employee that should be a
part of personnel file is received, besides this making of new files in order to maintain a stock
of files to use as any new employee join the organization. On 3 rd day in human resources
department I was moved forward to the recruitment process, I was taught how manpower
planning and budgeting is done, how candidates are sourced by means of CV data bank, CV
sourcing sites like www.rozee.pk. The next step involved telephonic calls to bring candidates
at workplace for interviews according to schedule. After that at the time of interview it was
my duty to inform on gate regarding candidates’ arrival, these candidates were provided with
candidate information form in order to fill it to precede interviews by attaching interview
evaluation form and CV of candidate. I being an internee remain actively engaged in
sourcing, assisting in interviews, and documenting personnel files at the time of joining of
selected candidate. Moreover, I learned about performance management system of MTCIL
that is responsibility of human resources, in this process at the start of every year each and
every department head is asked to formulate and provide Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
of their department or individuals working in their department. These KPI’s are collected and
kept in record for the purpose of evaluation by the mid of year and further at the end of year
and on the basis of these evaluations appraisal is done in three rankings that are A, B, C each
ranking consists of a percentage which is applied to the salary to obtain increment amount of
revised salary. These salary revision sheets are compiled and approved by CEO, finally the
increment letters are delivered to employees of each department.

6 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
6.1 Conclusion:

MTCIL is growing rapidly in manufacturing sector in Pakistan. In 2009 MTCIL was awarded
as Brand of the Year in Pakistan. More essential thing is that MTCIL is making innovation in
tiles manufacturing such as new designs, new materials and new recipes are used to bring
more sufficient results. MTCIL is carrying its operations both manually and on computerized
custom-made software. It is currently working on the implementation of SAP in the
organization and would shift all its operation on SAP till the end of this year. Master group is
trying to develop all of its industrial units in the area of Kamonke and Muridkay to become
an industrial hub in that region. As technology advances MTCIL is also trying to make more
efficient use of technology as to respond the World in means of technology and other
developments. It has a remarkable organizational Structure, effective and efficient market
network. This is the fact behind that it has the largest market share and competitive advantage
over its competing brands.

The MTCIL employees are seemed to be working efficiently and with dedication. Every
employee is deployed according to his or her expertise in the concerning department which
lead to the appropriate and smooth flow of operations in the organization.

The experience during my stay in MTCIL was much informative and value addition to my
experience. Employees are supportive enough to encourage and provide me with nurturing
guidance. I observed there that how a practical life differentiates from the theoretical life.

In fact, the period I remain in MTCIL for the purpose of internship has added many useful
experiences which will help me in my studies, practical and personal life as well. However,
few things that I observed that practical life would be really tough and disciplined if I want to
reach at a level where I can able to make decisions regarding procedures, people, financial
matters, policies of a worthy organization.

6.2 Recommendations:

Recommendations are considered to be the most important part of an internship report,

without which no report is considered complete and meaningful. This part of the report is
based on the previous sections i.e. review and analysis. Furthermore, for bringing
suggestions, discussions have been directed with the staff of MTCIL officers, who not only
provided the basis for recommendations but also pointed out some areas, where the change
for the development is utmost important. Realizing the importance of this section, efforts
have been made to give possible recommendations, which are categorized under the
following:

• A research cell should be established that continuously try to gather information about the
present action about its competitors and predictable future actions. So, in this way more
effective strategies can be expressed. It is why that organizational department individually
involved in the process of research to develop innovative designs and new product
features, but it is at individual level which may waste resources of the company.

• MTCIL should become very specific about its competitors, so that it can know who its
competitor is in the first degree and who is in the second degree. Then the first-degree
competitors should be observed closely in order to keep eye on trend of the market.

• The assessment center in terms of hiring is not strong enough due to which employee
turnover is high, often employee from a certain department resigns and human resource
department has to make emergency replacement of that vacant position. So, they need
improvement in this regard.

• The system imposed in order to run the entire process of accounts and procurement
requires to many approvals, it involve too many points where the recording of a particular
document is done which afterwards create problem if at any point a mistake is done the
rectification process took much long time and mental efforts. The procedures should be
revised and make them simple in order to avoid complexions and mistakes that could be
hurdle in smooth flow of daily operations.

• There is much delay in the processing of different requests coming from the employees
from all over the factory e.g. reimbursement of medical bills, travelling expenses etc,
therefore these facilities should be improved to add in the motivation level of employees
that ultimately will help in making employees committed and retained in organization.
