Getting to know the classroom routines. . .

“For a child to learn something new, you need to repeat it in the average eight times. For

a child to unlearn an old behavior and replace it with a new behavior, you need to repeat

the new behavior on the average of 28 times”

- Harry Wong

Early in the morning, the 1st thing that the students do is to attend the flag raising

ceremony which starts at 7:15 in the morning. Then the morning exercise routine and

lastly the morning information of the teachers. After that the students returns to their

respective classrooms. Since I have an advisory class, after the flag ceremony, we then

proceed to our monitorial works, the students are divided to 5 groups. First are the

Backyard Monitors, then the Hallway Monitors, the Classroom Monitors and Window

Monitors 1 and 2. As a teacher you are model of every student so in terms of cleaning

you must be an epitome to them. I am the captain of the ship so I have to be the first one

to move and do the work for if they see me working they’ll also have the urge to help. If I

want to let them clean I have to clean first for all eyes are on me what I do they follow

since they believe I am a teacher.

After 15 minutes of doing the monitorial cleaning and preparation the first period

then begins. I am their teacher in the first period but before starting the class I have to

make sure that everybody gets inside the classroom. Starting the class with a smile is a

must have since you have to create rapport between you and your students to let them feel

3
free in engaging in the activities. Then we have first the prayer. It is very important to

start a class by a prayer since it is one way of lifting up your cares to the Lord, asking for

guidance all throughout the session. Then the checking if attendance follows, I have to

make a tally of the absences of a student before the presenting the lesson to be informed

about their whereabouts and the reason why they’re about for this will be reported to the

parents. Next is my motivational activity, which is the springboard to my new lesson.

Giving of motivation enhances the will of the learners to learn more. It brightens and

conditions their minds to the new lesson.

Teaching high school students specifically in the Grade 7 is a challenge for me for

they test my courage and enhance my skills and knowledge and push my limit about the

subject taken and also to the heterogeneous characters of 180 students who are still

having lagged in their past elementary lives, that’s why I always prepare myself not only

for the best but also for the worst that could happen every meeting.

At the end of the lesson, I always give evaluation to my students in order for me

to know as to the extent of the understanding of my students in the lesson discussed.

The Journey Begins With The First Step...

It was November 24, 2017 when I first stepped on the grounds of Sta. Catalina

National High School as a student teacher wearing my uniform with a smile and a little

bit of confidence facing every single

individual I got to bumped with. I

inhaled deeply, trying to calm myself.

This was my alma mater, I never

thought after 4 years I’m back, not a

high school student but a Student

Teacher. I close my eyes and tried to

feel all those memories. Excitement

rush down my nerves but chills runs down my spine. I’ll be meeting my high school

teachers again and I’m going to be one of them soon but am I ready for this? Am I

prepared?

I know I am but a part of me still question the skills I have. From the look in

everyone’s faces, they were expecting a lot from me and I don’t want to fail them. We

were welcomed by Mr. Renato Sales since the principal Mrs. Lajato was not around. The

first entrance of the English majors was epic since we were told to go home for the

distribution of mentee’s among English majors is not yet final.

First meet with the Mentor

Monday came. I felt really nervous when Ma’am Lajato led us to our respective

mentors. I saw this coming, yet the nervousness I felt can never be denied. My mentor

7
was no other than Ms. Ferlyn T. Armeña, my English and Values

Education teacher during my high school years. Meeting her was

a great privileged and to be her mentee is an honor. She had a

different set of standards and I was really doubtful if I could

meet even a single one but she helped me out to every ups and

downs

First Observation

I was given a table by my mentor at the back of the classroom. For a short time she

let me sat at the back but it wasn’t really an observation time but my mentor told me that

I should prepare an activity in introducing myself to the class and likewise. I was

pressured that time. I wasn’t prepared for this I thought that I would just be sitting at back

but my mentor challenged me on my first day. I was so thankful I made up an interactive

activity for the class even though it was unprepared. After that my mentor told me my

first ever lesson, “You’re a teacher it is your responsibility to awaken the joy of every

learner’s mind so be prepared always.”

8
First Lesson Plan

I was just too excited the time I wrote my first lesson plan. My first topic then was all

about Logical Connectors.

First Instructional Materials

On having my first IM's, I used a story to introduce to them what logical connectors

is a text twist.

9
First Class

After the 1-day observation – introduction thingy, I was then allowed to have my first

class. This was actually an exciting moment-- the moment that I personally met my

students. I could still remember the first time they looked at me and thought I was strict.

But I etched smile in their hearts, made jokes that are related so they will not feel any

barrier in learning.

First Real Frustrations

Encountering problems, prejudices, and the tiresome feeling schooling while

teaching was such a challenge. At a very long time I tried to hide and prevent my tears

from falling when I finally speak it out it goes as it flows. I know I can't talk and explain

to everybody about my situation. It was quiet normal for a teacher to have

disappointments and frustrations, most especially when it comes to the student’s

performance and absences. It was like these during the first few weeks but eventually the

student were improving and other isolated ones started opening up.

10
Preparing
Instructional
Materials

11
Preparing Instructional Materials
Every lesson I thought of something that could be a very good visual aids for my

students to appreciate to but when I remember what my ED instructors said that too

colorful will distract the students and may overlaps the content of the visual aids. So what

I did, I minimize too arts. At first I was too choosy and very diligent in making visual

aids but I found out the disadvantages it took me long to post especially if it is too many

so what I did I minimized using visual aids.

Long before I started practice teaching, I already had a lot of plans in mind. When I

was in the field, I realized that I can't handle it all -- I mean, I can't do everything in time.

Time was even more precious than gold that I can hardly had time for sleeping and even

eating as well.

Some says that I have a good penmanship, so instead of putting arts or design I make

my penmanship good and legible enough for the students to read. My instructional

materials did not even reach my standards. All this time I am very particular with regards

to art. Time is scarce. What is important to me is that something to use to aid my

teaching.

My usual time for making IM's was during night. Most of the time, I slept at 12 in

the midnight. I don't really mind it though, for the thought of bringing something good

for the students.

Making visual aids needs a good financial amount also to make sure that it would

look presentable to the eyes and most of all the contents are readable. I sometimes do

reusing or recycling to lessen the expenses.

17
Designing and Structuring the Classroom and Bulletin Boards

This was supposedly my specialty, but of course, I can’t do things right then for I

need to consider my mentor. And starting from the first day, I had been thinking on how

to structure the room since the dominant color was orange and green. That was obviously

her favorite colors and I was afraid she might not like the way I did my structuring.

While I was handling my class, she would sit in her table, cutting papers. She did

the structuring at some areas of the room so I focused on her bulletin boards. It was not

that easy though, for her bulletin boards are quite big compared to others. In fact it took

us a lot of Saturdays and Sundays at school to finish all of them

Student teaching I the culminating field experience in the teacher curriculum.

this is the perfect time for us, student teachers to put everything we have learned in

school, into practice. This is one of a kind experience in the real teaching world.

WORKING WITH MY STUDENTS

One way of respecting you as a teacher is by respecting also your students. This is

the key idea that I always inculcate in my mind every time I enter the school. In dealing

with my students, always look at their differences when it comes to attitude, character

and learning capabilities. We can never set aside the fact that there are students who have

attitude and behavioral problems. But this doesn’t stop me from doing my job. Instead, it

motivates me to strive hard in reaching out to them.

In terms of participation, I have no problem with my students. They were cooperative

and most especially down to earth students. They actively participated in every class

activities, giving of the best that they can do.

VII - INTEGRITY

34
VII - PRUDENCE

35
WORKING WITH THE PRINCIPAL

The role of the cooperating School Principal is to collaborate with the University College

Student Teaching Supervisor as a resource and facilitator of placements of student

teachers and provides the social and professional aspects of administering practice

teaching. Our principal was Mrs. Marilyn Lajato, is a person with a very positive outlook

in life, smart looking, loving, supportive, energetic as well as a person with a kind-

hearted attitude. The teachers of Sta. Catalina National High School are very

approachable, friendly, kind. When there are times that we have a talked with some of the

teachers. They give us advices on how to handle the students’ behaviors, on what

strategies to do and even share their experiences to us to be our inspiration

WORKING WITH MY MENTOR

At first I am really nervous and shy because my mentor looks too formal and a bit

strict. For the 4 – month stay in school, we got along very well. The nervousness I felt

was replaced by confidence

and assurance. I don’t have

any problem working with my

mentor. She had given me

everything I needed especially

in the field of knowledge with

regards to teaching. She taught

me a variety of strategies and

techniques that I should be

36
using in my classroom and lessons. Ms. Ferlyn really exerted a lot of effort to mold my

mind and heart to the realities of teaching. I was lucky enough to have a mentor like her.

WORKING WITH MY CO- STUDENT TEACHER

You can’t change the world alone, you will need some help and in order to get your

starting point to your destination, take a friend, colleagues, the good will of strategies and

a strong faith to guide us, in many trials you may encounter you need a peer to rely with

even if you are in the cooperating school. Working with my co-student teacher was good

at all. They helped me every now and then especially in the lesson that I am not sure with

my idea. I see the cooperation and the growing friendship between us. We helped each

other in structuring our bulletin boards. On the day of our final demonstration, we helped

each other in making the visual aids and everything. We helped with one another on what

they needed. We also shared great moments when we were attending the school activities

in our cooperating school.

37
STUDENT TEACHING SUPERVISORS

The supervisors monitor the progress of the student teacher throughout the

experience, ensuring satisfactory work. A grade of pass or fail in student teaching, as well

as satisfactory completion of a school’s education program is an indication as to whether

the college recommends the student for certification to teach.

Before we were deployed, Dr. Lucille C. Himpayan and the rest of the student

teaching advisers, helped us to understand what student teaching was. They taught us

what strategies we are going to use that were fitted to the behavior of the learners. She

taught us also on how to deal with my student teaching mentor and other teachers of my

cooperating school. Our supervisors are very approachable and supportive in terms of

giving advices on us.

Comments and Suggestions

Good Points:
1. Reading of the objectives, before the discussion. Very Good!
2. Instruction is given clearly.
3. The teacher is well groomed. Very Good!
4. Visual aids are well prepared.
5. Voice is well modulated, but it seemed your voice is just taken from the throat and
not from the stomach.
6. Recognizing their effort through applauses. Good!
7. The teacher clearly pronounced the words.
8. Vocabulary activity very engaging.
9. Questions were evenly distributed. Very Good!

Points for Improvement

1. Use pointer.
2. Refrain your students from answering in chorus, like let one student from each
group read their answer.
3. Stories should be given as assignments for pre – reading so that when they come
to the class all you have to do is discussion. The 10 minutes allotted for call can be
used for deepening.
4. You are too serious, put a smile in your face. ( smile often )
5. You can deeper the moral lesson by discussing more in contentment, achieve
through hard work, like its positive and negative implication.
6. Checking of the attendance should be done at the start of the class.

your works on the board and choose a
reporter to report.

“Correct. All of your observations are

right. Spiderman, Barbie, the Unicorn,
and the fairy belong to the unreal
column. On the other hand, the President,

the dog, the tree and the stones exist so
they must be put in the real column.

3. Activity (Students doing their reports from Group 1 to

5)
“Let’s have another activity. In the same
group, your task is to construct 1 unreal
statement and 1 real sentence from the
story, “Three Wishes”. You only have 5
minutes to do that. Then report your
work.
(Each group will present their work.)

“Times up. The last group to post their

work on the chalkboard will be the first
to present.”

(The teacher will check every after

presentation of each group.) “Reality Ma’am”

“From the example you’ve given what do

you call those events that are happening
in the real world?
“Fantasy Ma’am”

“What about those events that is

imaginary?”

71
4. Discussion

Reality is the state of things as they

actually exist rather than as they may
appear. It is often contrasted with
what is imaginary. Fantasy, on the
other hand, is something that is far
removed from normal reality or the
act of imagining something.

When we say John runs across the

football field that is something real
but when we say John flaps his arms
and flies over the city that is another “None. Ma’am.”
story.

“Questions about reality and

“We can say that an action or event is real
fantasy?”
when it tells about something that can really
Generalization: happen in real life.”

“When do we say that an action, event, “When the story is only a make believe and
people or places are real? that could never happen in real life.”

“When do we say it’s just a fantasy?”

C. Practice
“Since you now have an idea of what
reality and fantasy is, let’s have another
activity called Pass it To Me. I will give
you a rolled paper. As we listen to the
song Dying Inside by Darren Espanto
you will be passing the rolled paper.

72
When I say STOP the person holding the
rolled paper will open it up to see a
picture. Then make realistic or fanciful
statements out of that picture.

IV. Assessment ¼

Write F if the statement is a Fantasy and R if it is a Reality.

1. The computer talked to Elton and cried its heart out.
2. The park is full of children.
3. The elephant talked to the pope.
4. The witch stopped at the department store last Sunday to buy some potion.
5. Greta went to Korea yesterday. She was riding a magic carpet.

V. Assignment
In a short bond paper, make a photo collage that depicts reality and another one for
fantasy.
