Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Transportation

Online transportation is the kind of transportation that receives orders from customers
via smartphone application with automatic cost calculation without involving bargaining. The
kind of transportation has grown rapidly in several countries, including in Indonesia. Online
transportation already exists in Indonesia since 2010 but reached mainstream people in 2015.
Some online transportation available in Indonesia are GO-JEK, UBER, and GRAB. Lately,
online transportation becomes an option by people rather than public transportation.

This incident happens since the emergence of online transportation in major cities in
Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Bandung choose to use online transportation
rather than conventional transportation because of some advantages. Previously, customers
can only estimate on how much they would have to pay for their trip using ordinary public
transportation, but the online transportation allows customers to know the costs they have to
pay for their trip before ordering. Besides that, the price of online transportation is relatively
cheaper, especially if there is a promo code that will profit the customers. In the payment
process, customers also have many types of payment options. They can pay with cash or via
e-money. This is very helpful if they don’t bring enough money.

In addition, the proof of payment will be sent via e-mail after completing the trip. If
the customers want to reimburse, they can send the e-mail directly to the office finance
department. Some online transportation applications already have this feature so that
customers can easily look back on the trip history along with the amount that has been spent.
Customers will also feel safe because the application shows information about the driver and
the vehicle used. The pickup time is also visible so they will know when the driver will arrive
at their place.

There are 6 disadvantages, first is increasing traffic jam. To register as a member

online transportation is not a difficult matter, therefore many people are interested in this
online transportation. So with the increase in online transportation, almost everywhere and
every time people can see online transportation like gojek or grab in a road. In fact, many
online transportations that stand on the roadside make traffic jams, moreover many of driver
online transportation operate the phone on the streets to check the position of passengers
which will make the streets more crowded. The second disadvantages are prices can change.
Prices are possible and absolutely will change. This price change usually happens when
during a busy time such as lunchtime, holiday or when it rains. Each application has a
different price calculation system. This is because the purpose of this application is to find as
many as passengers so that all methods are taken to attract passengers and drivers. Besides
that, customers cannot order at any place This is because not all regions have drivers
transportation online. Gojek will be easily found when people are in the city, unlike when
people are in the village that people can’t order transportation online because the condition of
the surrounding community, so when people are traveling in the countryside then people want
to go back to town do not expect that people will easily order transportation online. Then,
Server errors usually occur at certain times, for example at work hours, where many users
and drivers use the online transportation application in one time, this can be overcome if we
wait for the server to be stable and delete data from the application so that it can access the
application again, and then disadvantages is cannot choose a driver, this is a problem that is
often complained by the user because the system has automatically selected the driver for the
user, this problem has been overcome by the owner as in grab, grab have a new feature they
called GrabNow, where users can choose the driver itself but this feature has not functioned
optimally because there are still many users who don't know it yet. The last cannot change the
destination, if want to change it must pay more. The purpose of this problem is that if we
have chosen the destination we cannot just change it, we must first arrive at the place where
we order it back to the desired place.

In our opinion, online transportation is very helpful for citizens when they want to
travel anywhere. But for villager, online transportation is useless, because in the village there
is no internet signal needed to access online transportation.
