9
BUT WHAT ABOUT SAFETY?
CAGING THE HAZARD OR CAGING THE HUMAN?
• The Myth of Zero Tolerance
− The technology already exist to remove humans from these
dangerous environments, there is no reason to have loader
and truck operators exposed to these hazards anymore
• Standards: ISO 13849-1,-2 (functional safety of machinery)
‒ Making the Transition from “Procedure or Engineering
Control” to “Full Elimination” - AS 61508 (process)
compliancy OR
• The Transition, “Just Do It” - it makes perfect sense
− People fear the unknown, but buy into the comforts and
benefits
• Diagnostics and analytics can be done remotely
• Maintenance can be done at floor level, no more climbing on/off machines
for checks
• Operators now in air-conditioned control rooms, no more dust and full body
vibrations
• The “Technology” to be exposed to the hazard, not the human i.e 3D
scanning of draw points and hang-ups
• Mines are getting deeper, grades are getting lower,
environments will not be suitable for humans in the future

• CAS- Collision Avoidance System.
• Other.

Mitigation Cost Benefits / ROI

 When an OH&S incident occurs, Industry is perceived  Provides automatic reporting- eg Tyre exceptions- rather
at “fault” and subsequently require evidence that than manual collection of data.
proves every endeavour has been implemented to  Production information for better traffic / fleet control.
mitigate risk of such incidents.  Training and Education of Workers for compliance.
 Ensure Workers Compliance / Care.  Ascertains “Cause / Fault” of an incident / non- compliance.
