FINAL ESSAY (SEMANTICS grad.

 Purpose: To develop an in depth understanding of a specific topic of interest that


is related to the course learning outcomes.

 Assignment: Write a 7-10 page (main text), double-spaced paper on some aspect
of college teaching/learning that relates to one or more of the course learning
outcomes.

 What to write about?

1. An analysis of semantic roles (theta-roles) of arguments in a certain piece of text

2. An analysis of a type of predicates (verbs) in a certain piece of text.

3. An analysis of certain type(s) of meaning transference in a certain piece of text.

4. A study of the expressions of space / time / motion in a certain piece of text /


idioms

5. A study of modality types / manifestation in a certain piece of text

6. An analysis of referring expressions / referential ambiguity in a certain piece of


text.

7. An analysis of how deictic expressions / implicatures are used in a certain (written


/ spoken) dialogue.

8. A (comparative) study /an analysis of onomatopoeic words in a certain piece of


text.

9. A (comparative) study of how certain colour terms / temporal expressions, spatial


expressions, etc. are used / perceived?

10. An analysis on the equivalence of an English piece of text and its Vietnamese
translated version in terms of modaltity.

11. Using sense relations (hyponymy/ synonymy / antonymy / etc.) in teaching


vocabulary

12. Teaching certain types of verbs (transfer, transition, attitudinal, etc.)

13. Using figure of speech in teaching reading / writing, etc. skills


14. Teaching colour terms / spatial idioms / motion idioms

15. Implications of morphological processes to teaching vocabulary

16. Implications of meaning change / development in teaching vocabulary

17. Implications of the map – territory analogy to language teaching

18. Implications of lexicon-experience relationship to teaching and learning


vocabulary

19. Implications of linguistic relativity in language teaching and learning

20. Other topics (related to what you have learnt in the course) which are presented at
the tutorial sessions and approved by the tutors (You are encouraged to choose
topics related to your presentation or thesis.)

 Evaluation Criteria: The criteria will include
1. evidence that you conducted a careful search of the current literature,
2. demonstration of reflective analysis of the literature and your topic,
3. well developed arguments (rationale) for your conclusions,
4. quality of your overall writing ability and adherence to APA formatting
requirements.
