In recent years, Pereira has been growing in
commercial exchange and the constant need
of transportation is more frequent now than
before. This process of growth has triggered
an evident development in different areas
which has helped the city placing itself in the
spotlight of the national context. Despite this,
this process has also brought about problem-
atics related to the air, water quality, and pol-
lution each citizen perceives in their daily ba-
sis. This issue is causing our environment de-
grades, and so, our health.
Based on this idea, apprentices from the Natu-
ral Resources Preservation program, at SENA
– Centro Agropecuario (Farming Center),
portrayed their ideas about their perception of
the environment quality in Pereira. Thus, here
are some of the students’ thoughts regarding
this topic.
“I think that the pollution we see in Pereira is
strong for the reason that people throw trash
into the rivers or the street, but it is not only
for this reason, pollution is also caused by the
smoke produced by factories, vehicles, also
people who burn waste, and oth-

Taking care of our environment is an every-
one’s must-do. Now is time to act to help our
environment be better, not only for our health,
but also for the welfare of our coming genera-
tions. We only have one Earth and it is our
due to save it. Therefore, what would you do
to help mitigating and preserving our environ-

In Risaralda, coffee and bananas continue to
predominate". The government of Risaralda
presented the results of the agricultural evalu-
ation of the region during 2018. This detailed
analysis showed that 68.6% of the crops are
coffee followed by plantain and avocado in
6.4%, sugar cane represents almost 10%. One
of the crops that has grown ostensibly in the
region is cocoa, which reached 1.890 hectares
cultivated, representing 2.8% of the total
products generated during the previous year.
Regarding the evaluation of livestock, 109
thousand cattle were reported in 78 thousand
717 hectares. if was established that in terms
of milk production, 76% is concentrated in
Pereira and Santa Rosa de Cabal. In addition
to the aforementioned, almost 202.000 pigs of
technical and 257.000 of the traditional pig
were identified, with Pereira having 120.000
(59.5%) of the total number of animals noti-
fied.
A Student’s Ex-
perience...
¡Hi everybody!
My name is Alejandro Ramirez Giraldo. I
am a student at SENA in in the Agropec-
uario Branch; I study Livestock Production
and I want to share with all of you my expe-
rience as an apprentice at SENA.
I love livestock and taking care of animals. I
always want to find the best way to help
them to be well. At SENA, I have learned a
lot about different kinds of cattle. Thanks to
my instructors, I can understand how to car-
ry out different processes of bovine repro-
duction, how to vaccinate them and how to
improve their stables. I also learn English
and I like that a lot. I love studying at SE-
NA and the best of all is that it is for free
for all Colombians. I invite you to register
and live this wonderful experience!
Countryside
or City?

People who work on the field (farmers) mi-
grate to the city every day looking for better
opportunities; if you go to the outskirts of Pe-
reira you will realize that the coffee harvest is
being wasted and spilt all over the ground,
since there are not people interested in har-
vesting and farmers say the situation is diffi-

cult due to the lack of well-paid work for
them, therefore it is not possible to support
their families anymore. Is work on the field
no longer profitable enough? Will It be more
likely to succeed in the city?
In my humble opinion, I would never change
working in the countryside for having an 8-
hour-job in the city from Monday to Saturday
to get paid the minimum wage, which is actu-
ally a “joke” for our families.
Another reason why fewer Colombians live in
the countryside is that they want to have the
Narco lifestyle, which is the easy way to have
luxuries and commodities; hence people are
becoming so superficial that they do not ap-
preciate how wonderful a sunrise is, maybe,
they do not enjoy to see the awakening of na-
ture while drinking a delicious cup of recently
brewed coffee.
In my personal opinion, these two factors are
the biggest reasons why people are leaving
the countryside life; in first place there is the
economic part which is affecting millions of
families in the country and, on the other side,
there is the perception people have of a com-
fortable life.
The government and the education system
should encourage the love for the country life,
because in the end, it is there would not be
City life if there was not Country life. The
first step to motivate people, would be to in-
crease the economic income farmers receive
for the hard work.

The need for an international language has
always been of a permanent search of every
society in history, with the current technolo-
gies we can communicate with others any-
where in the world instantly, this accelerates
the learning processes of different languages.
In addition to the academic field, the use of
English focuses on diplomacy, tourism, inter-
net, business, commerce. Regardless of the
specialty, being competent in the use of that
language gives us an advantage in today´s
globalized world.
In our daily lives, without realizing about it,
we use anglicisms such as football, basket-
ball, baseball, we talk about partners or
CEO that means Executive Director, which
in turn is the usual "boss"; and what used to
be the time of recreation or having a coffee,
now is "break”. The workspaces in which
several offices converge are now called co-
working.
English is the official language of many Inter-
national Organizations such as the European
Union, the United Nations or Unesco. This is
due to historical and political reasons, due to
the importance that the British Empire had in
the past when its language was spread across
all continents, and the importance of the Unit-
ed States as a power today. For all this, we
can say that it is the universal language,
which helps us to communicate without barri-
ers.
It is never too late to learn a language, alt-
hough it takes a lot of time and effort, what
counts is the attitude you have. It is not neces-
sary to learn everything, sometimes with a
little vocabulary, we can express and under-
stand different ways of acting and thinking.
Many people do not feel able to study a lan-
guage, but it is important to remember that
"Making mistakes is a good way to learn."
In conclusion, English help us to communi-
cate in many contexts, it gives us the ability to
read, listen, write and understand a new cul-
ture, and most importantly, it creates progress
in our lives and gives us personal satisfaction.
