IV. PROCEDURES
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Elicit
What is a circle?
A circle is a set of points equidistant from a fixed
point called the center.
What is a radius?
A radius is the line segment that connects the
center and any point on the circle.
B. Engage
(Show a scenario.)
A goat tied on a pole and grazes on the
grass. The goat ate already the grass
nearby. To eat more grass, the goat grazes
on the grass where its rope bends at the
maximum length.

What figure do you think the goat made by A circle.

grazing on the grass?
C. Explore
Let us replace the grass with a coordinate At (5,0), (0,5), (-5,0), (0,-5)
plane and tie the rope at the origin (0, 0).
If the length of the rope is 5 meters, at
what point do you think the goat could
reach in the coordinate plane?

Which of this figure would best show the

path of the goat?

A B B

Why do you say so?

Because the length of the rope must be at equal
distance from the origin.
D. Explain
We can observe that the goat could reach
at other point aside from the four points
mentioned.

At point (3, 3), do you think the goat could (0, 0) and (3, 3)
reach at the maximum distance? 𝑑 = √(3 − 0)2 + (3 − 0)2
𝑑 = √9 + 9
𝑑 = √18
𝑑 ≈ 4.24 units
Hence, the goat could reach point (3, 3) but not
the maximum distance.

(0, 0) and (-5, 4)

How about point (-5,4)?
𝑑 = √(−5 − 0)2 + (4 − 0)2
𝑑 = √25 + 16
𝑑 = √41
𝑑 ≈ 6.4 units
Hence, the goat could not reach the point (-5,4).

How about point (-3,-4)? (0, 0) and (-3,- 4)

𝑑 = √(−3 − 0)2 + (−4 − 0)2
𝑑 = √9 + 16
𝑑 = √25
𝑑 = 5 units
Hence, the goat could reach the point (-3,-4) with
5 units from the origin.

Let us plot in a coordinate plane the points

we obtained.

We can see that the circle did not pass the

points (3, 3) and (-5,4). The points that the goat
could reach only must have a distance of 5 units
from the center.
Let us say that the goat could reach at any (0, 0) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (𝑥, 𝑦); 𝑑 = 𝑟
point (x, y) with a maximum distance (r), what do
you think is the equation of the path? 𝑟 = √(𝑥 − 0)2 + (𝑦 − 0)2
𝑟 = √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2
𝑟2 = 𝑥2 + 𝑦2

Therefore, we say that the equation of the circle,

when the center is at (0, 0) and the radius (r) is
given by 𝒓𝟐 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 , where 𝑟 > 𝑜.

E. ELABORATE
Find the equation of the circle of the
following:

Ex. 1: center (0, 0), r=6 units 62 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2

𝟑𝟔 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐

Ex. 2: center (0, 0), endpoint of the radius is at 𝑟 = √(8 − 0)2 + (6 − 0)2
(8,6). 𝑟 = √64 + 36
𝑟 = √100
𝑟 = 10 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠

102 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2
𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐

F. EVALUATE
Find the equation of the circle. Answers:
1. Center (0, 0), 𝑟 = 4 1. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔
2. Center (0, 0), and endpoint of the radius is 2. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟐𝟓
at (-4, 3).
3. Center (0, 0), 𝑟 = 6 3. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟑𝟔
4. Center (0, 0), endpoint of the radius is at 4. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎
(-6,-8).
5. Center (0, 0), 𝑟 = 12 5. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟒𝟒

G. EXTEND
Assignment:
Give the equation of the following. Answers:
1. Center (0, 0), 𝑟 = 8 1. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟔𝟒
2. Center (0, 0), and endpoint of the radius is 2. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟑𝟒
at (-3, 5).
3. Center (0, 0), 𝑟 = √5 3. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟓
4. Center (0, 0), endpoint of the radius is at 4. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎
(-6, 8).
5. Center (0, 0), 𝑟 = 13 5. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔𝟗
