COM 502 – ENGINEERING COMMUNICATION AND PRACTICE

TOPIC: TECHNICAL WRITING - REPORT

Assignment 1 – 20 Marks Due date: Week 6 or 7
You have two options to choose from. You may do either Option 1 or Option 2. (Choose only one).

Option 1
As the president of the FNU student association, you have been asked to write an investigative report
outlining some of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues or problems that are apparent in
your college or campus.
You have been asked to conduct an investigation and prepare a report.
You are to present the report at the next management meeting where the Heads of Schools and the Dean
of the College of Engineering, Sciences and Technology will be present.
Conduct your research and write a report on the above issues.

Option 2
The Dean of your school has requested you to present an investigative report.

As supervisor you have will have to visit the site and examine the current situation(s) and issues that are
evident, and write a report based on your findings.

These are some areas that you might like to consider for your report:

 The classrooms/lecture theatres;

 The resource centres such as the library, canteen/food services, student recreation
 The current structure/state of a part of the campus and how this can be improved
or otherwise restructured
 The departments located in this campus and how they should be placed in the new
plan for an even more efficient system
 The university hostel or halls of residence

Before you begin your report you must thoroughly research the current state and decide on appropriate
changes that you might like to consider. You will then have to write a report based on the facts you have
discovered.

The due date for this report is Week 6 or 7.

Assignment Submission

The report must be neatly typed and should not exceed 12-15 pages in its content.
A soft copy assignment for this assignment should be submitted to the lecturer.
Use the appropriate language, style and format. You must submit the assignment on time.

Your report should have the following format:

2.0 Letter of Transmittal
3.0 Summary / Abstract
4.0 Table of contents
5.0 Introduction
6.0 Findings/Body/Discussion
7.0 Conclusions
8.0 Recommendations
9.0 Reference
10.0 Appendices

You are required to submit the written report in week 6 or 7 of the semester.
You will write the report in groups with a maximum of 4 students only.
Please consult with your lecture if you require further clarifications regarding this
