“Good morning second graders! This week we have been talking about the parts of
speech. Who can remind the class what a noun is? That’s right, a noun is a person, place,
or thing. What is an example of a noun? Who can remind us what a verb is? Good job, a
verb is an action word. What are some examples of verbs? Great job with your examples!
Can I get a volunteer to read the first sentence on the board? (The dog rolled in the grass)
Now who can read the second sentence? (The brown, shaggy dog rolled excitedly in the
tall, green grass). Which sentence do you think is more interesting?

To continue our practice, I will then pass out worksheets. We will do the first few as a
class and take time to decode the sentence, which noun or verb is being embellished and
explaining how we know it is an adjective or adverb.
Exercise
Independent Practices
After we have done the first few questions together, I will release the students to finish the
worksheet independently. There are eight easier sentences and three challenge
sentences at the bottom. Then we will go over the answers to the questions they
completed on their own. I will make sure that everyone understands the answers and
reasoning behind them before moving on.
Summary
Closure of Lesson
“I am so proud of you second graders! Does anyone have any other questions about
adjectives and adverbs before we wrap up? Well thank you for being so cooperative and
thoughtful during our lesson today! I appreciate all of your hard work coming up with
examples and completing the worksheet. Please pass up the worksheets and get ready to
transition.”
