Review
 Open/focus the lesson
 Activate prior knowledge
“Good morning second graders! This week we have been talking about the parts of
speech. Who can remind the class what a noun is? That’s right, a noun is a person, place,
or thing. What is an example of a noun? Who can remind us what a verb is? Good job, a
verb is an action word. What are some examples of verbs? Great job with your examples!
Can I get a volunteer to read the first sentence on the board? (The dog rolled in the grass)
Now who can read the second sentence? (The brown, shaggy dog rolled excitedly in the
tall, green grass). Which sentence do you think is more interesting?

connect with students’ lives?).

“Today we will be learning about adjectives and adverbs. These are extra words that we
put into our sentences that change or expand on our nouns and verbs. It is important to
learn what adjectives and adverbs are and how to use them so that we can make our
writing more interesting and exciting!”
Presentation
 Teacher Modeling/Demonstration of Learning (What are you teaching and how? Be
specific.)
 Check for Understanding
 Guided Practice or Activity (student performs along with teacher guidance)
“Adjectives are words that describe nouns. In our sentence on the board brown, shaggy,
tall, and green are all adjectives. If you look on the anchor chart you will see the different
types of adjectives. There are colors, shapes, sizes, tastes, looks, smells, feels, weathers,
behaviors and numbers. Brown and green would be what type of adjective? What type of
adjective is tall? That’s right, size. What about shaggy? Probably a look or a feel, right!
Now adverbs are words that describe verbs. Let’s look on the anchor chart at the types of
adverbs. There are adverbs that describe the quality, or the “how” of the verb. There are
also adverbs that describe when, where, how often, and how much the verb occurs. Who
can tell me what the adverb was in the sentence on the board and what type of adverb it
is? Excitedly was the adverb and it is a “how” adverb.”

To continue our practice, I will then pass out worksheets. We will do the first few as a
class and take time to decode the sentence, which noun or verb is being embellished and
explaining how we know it is an adjective or adverb.
Exercise
 Independent Practices
After we have done the first few questions together, I will release the students to finish the
worksheet independently. There are eight easier sentences and three challenge
sentences at the bottom. Then we will go over the answers to the questions they
completed on their own. I will make sure that everyone understands the answers and
reasoning behind them before moving on.
Summary
 Closure of Lesson
“I am so proud of you second graders! Does anyone have any other questions about
adjectives and adverbs before we wrap up? Well thank you for being so cooperative and
thoughtful during our lesson today! I appreciate all of your hard work coming up with
examples and completing the worksheet. Please pass up the worksheets and get ready to
transition.”

Post Unit Plan Procedures

Assessment
The students will be asked to turn their worksheet over and write a sentence using at least one
adjective and at least one adverb. They should circle and identify both with the proper term. Then
we will go around the room and let everyone “present” their sentence to the class.
Intervention/Adaptation for Special Needs
For students with visual impairments I will provide a print off version of the anchor chart so that
they can more easily use it as a reference.
Students with issues holding a pencil or writing will be provided with an online worksheet through
an iPad in which to complete the activity.
Early Finishers
Early finishers will be asked to come up with more than just one original sentence. They will still
be asked to choose one to present to the class, but this will provide extra practice.
