SHOP EXERCISE 1:
Dust Pan

Name: Pantaleon, Andrew Joseph S.

Course Code/Section: ME137L-2/A19
Student No.: 2018162144
Group No: 1
Grade

Engr. Jose V. Hernandez

Instructor
OBJECTIVE:

1. To be able to make a dust pan.

2. To familiarize the students to use a bending machine.
3. To apply other methods of bending.
4. To enable the students to know other types of hand tools.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

Proper utilization and standardization of cutting commercial size of tin sheet that is
a significant factor in cost reduction of any project. Have knowledge of working with plan
and layout in order to produce a good quality project.

MATERIALS:

1 piece 12” x 12” G.I. sheet

1 piece 1 ½” x 5/8” x 28” wood
2 pieces of blind rivet for rivetting

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Tin-snip – for cutting tin sheets of metal with gauge 18 and higher
Back saw – for cutting wood
Ball-peen Hammer – for pounding nails
Plane – for reducing smoothing surface
Mallet – for pounding tin sheet
Half-round File – for finishing and sanding the corners of the metal
Rasp File (for wood only) – for coarsely shaping wood
Drill Press - for drilling holes in the metal or wood
Drill Bit – used with a drill press for drilling holes in the metal or wood
Bender - to assemble a bend on a workpiece
Riveter - for passing through holes in two or more plates or pieces to hold them together
Blind Rivet – to secure pieces together
Marker – for making necessary markings on the sheet
Ruler – for measuring

PROCEDURE:

1. Make a pattern drawing of a dust pan on illustration board.

2. Trace the pattern drawing in a 12 x 12 G.I. sheet with the use of the marker.
3. Cut the G.I. sheet with a tin snip following the pattern.
4. Using a bender, bend all the possible portions that a bender can accommodate.
The remaining bends, use the ball-peen hammer and bench vise for bending.
5. Smooth the surfaces of the wood and taper it by means of half round file and a
plane.
6. At the end of the wood, using a marker, mark it with the same depth of the folded
G.I. sheet and cut it mid-section with the use of the crosscut saw. Place the G.I.
sheets together with the wooden handle on a drill press to make holes on the center of it.
7. Then attach the wooden handle to the folded G.I. sheet by means of a blind rivet
and a riveter. Finish.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is a tin snip?

- Tin snips are shears designed to cut through thin sheets of sheet metal. While their
design resembles scissors, they are much stronger, with heavier blades that make
metal cutting as easy as possible.
2. Why is there a need of clipping the edges of the dust pan?

- Clipping the edges of the dust pan is needed to prevent any sharp edges which can
cause cuts to the user.
3. Is there a need of flaring out the front side of the dust pan?

- Yes, flaring out the front side of the dust pan makes it easier to collect fine dust and
small particles and also prevents dirt from going under the dust pan.
4. To avoid breaking out the wood while riveting, what is the best thing to do?

- When riveting materials such as wood, it's best to use aluminum rivets that peel at
the end and are designed for use on softer materials.
5. Why do you use a mallet in pounding a G.I. sheet?

-Mallet is often made of rubber or sometimes wood. They are typically used to form
G.I. sheet metal, since they do not leave marks and are less likely to dent the
workpiece.
6. How many 12 inches by 12 inches G.I. sheet you can cut out of 4 feet by 8 feet
standard G.I. sheet?

-1 foot is equal to 12 inches. 1ft x 1ft = 12 in x 12 in. To get the area, multiply its width
and length. So 4 ft x 8 ft is equal to 32 ft^2. Therefore, there are 32 G.I. sheets of 12
in by 12 in that can be cut out from 4 ft by 8 ft G.I. sheet.
7. Name two other ways for bending G.I. sheet.

- Using grinder to create grooves in the G.I. sheet and by using a roll bending
technique which can form a cylindrical or curve galvanized iron sheets.
8. What will happen when you attached a longer handle to the dust pan?

-The dust pan will not be stable on the floor, it might fall off. On the other hand, long
handled dustpan eliminates strain on the user’s back.
9. Why is there a need to tapered the handle?

-Tapering the handle removes sharp edges of the wood and should have an
ergonomic handle design for easy gripping.
10. What is the use of a flat nose vise grip?

-Flat nose vise grips are hand tools used to hold objects firmly. They are also useful
for bending and compressing a wide range of materials.
DISCUSSION:

A dust pan is a cleaning tool used in combination with a lengthy brush or a

broom. They're used to pick up the dirt and waste on the ground. T.E. McNeill
patented the first dustpan. McNeill is an inventor of the United States in 1858. Lloyd P.
Ray, an African-American enhanced the dustpan design, which is the addition of a brief
wooden handle to a metal collection plate and was patented on 9 August 1897.

In addition, the dustpans today come in different sizes depending on your needs.
The dustpan may be either made of flexible plastic or of durable metal, both of which are
sturdy and long-lasting. Short-handled dustpans that are often used around homes, while
business and industrial organizations often use a longer handle that does not require the
user to bend constantly while using it. There have been multiple advances in improving
the function and design of the dust pan since it was invented.

In our first shop exercise, we are needed to create a dust pan with the use of new
tools as well as equipment in this course. We are familiar with using bender, riveter, and
tin snips for our very first meeting. Using the bender to bend a sheet metal. Two or more
items are attached to each other using the riveter. The tin snips are used to cut a
material's useless portion. First, make layouts in a distinct sheet of material (e.g. folder,
cartolina, carton) to generate a dust pan. This will assist to prevent using sheet metals. It
will serve as a temporary design so that the possible errors in this layout can be
rechecked. Place the temporary design on the sheet metal and retrace the pattern if it is
already precise or precise. Use a low-impact pounding material to bend the small portion
of a sheet metal. The edges of a shaped dust pan must be folded to prevent sharp edges.
It can cause a individual or a user to be injured. Place the materials to be mounted on a
flat surface when using the riveter. This will assist to prevent breaking the attachment of
a soft material. We succeeded in creating a dust pan in our store practice by combining
the theories we acquired.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION:

There are four objectives that need to be achieved in this shop practice. With the
assistance of a bending machine, drill press machine and other instruments, we were
able to create a dust pan with a galvanized iron sheet and a wood provided to us. The
learners had become more comfortable with the bending machine's uses and features as
well as the methods of bending a material into the required curves of shape and shape.
In relation, we have been able to understand the other kinds of hand tools that are
frequently used in mechanical shop 2 through this shop exercise. Basically, I conclude
that we effectively completed the project because the group was able to achieve the four
objectives.
I strongly recommended that communication should take place within the group.
There is a division of job in this to complete the product quicker and to prevent errors if
duties are in charge. Some will do the wood filing while the others will oversee the metal
bending. Be cautious here in managing the sheet of metal to avoid cuts as there are sharp
edges. Make allowances when smoothing the wood to prevent minimal filing issues. In
addition, listen to the professor or the lab assistant attentively and ask if you're doing it
right.
